Several near six-footers represented the class in athletics, five made the A football team, seven were on the B basketball team, and several others filled important spots in the baseball and track teams. Eleven boys joined F. F. The girls in the class were very active in F. H. A. , Girls' Fed. , chorus, and other school activities. They also sponsored a freshman get acquainted dance. Two of the girls were majorettes. The chorus and Jean Gibbons, piano accompanist, under the direction of Mr. Cooley participated in many activities. The Christmas Program and the Spring Concert were the two main events for the chorus. Not only did they particiapte in singing, but were also ushers for the Community Chorus presentation of the Messiah . This oratorio was previously studied by the class. The purpose of this party was to help get the underclass girls acquainted with the upperclass girls. A. was again very active this past year. The Dayton crops judging team won the district contest for the eighth consecutive year and the livestock judging team won many banners. The latter's winnings included firsts at the Palouse Empire Fair in Colfax and at the Benton-Franklin County Fair at Kennewick. Ike Maxwell scored well during the season, and Dewey Bell was top individual at the state contest at W. S. C. Ohter members included Delbert Fletcher, Bill Lyman, Bob McCauley, Roger Beckel, Gerald Schafer, and George Charles. The boys were well represented at the state F.F.A. convention. Otto Krouse won the State Farm Mechanics Award and David Archer was awarded the State Farmer Degree. Bill Lyman attended as official delegate and John Peterson and George Charles were in the state band. Otto Krouse, Roger Beckel, Bill Lyman, John Peterson, Bob McCauley, Delbert Fletcher, and Ike Maxwell attended the national F. F. A. convention at Kansas City. Fifty-two members showed livestock at the Spokane Junior Livestock show. Total exhibits were 111 swine and 19 sheep. Winnings included nine breed and reserve champions in hogs, and four champions in sheep. Lee Verne Dudley repeated last year's winnings by again showing the grand champion fat hog. Ike Maxwell showed the reserve grand champion pen of all breeds. Bill Lyman showed the champion other breed lamb and the reserve champion Hampshire lamb, while Gerald Pulliam showed the reserve grand champion pen of fat lambs over all breeds. The annual Parent and Son Banquet saw the Star Farmer Award go to John Peterson, the sheep award to Bill Lyman, the swine award to George Charles, and the beef award to Ike Maxwell. Bill Lyman won the best record book a' fard and the scholarship award for the second consecutive year. Roger Beckel won the Leadership Award. Some of their projects were as follows: sponsored a Slave Day, on which the members were auctioned off for a day's work at a Kiwanian's home, furnished toys for a needy family at Christmas, gave a television set to the Pleasant Valley Rest Home, and scraped windows after Halloween. They also played a basketball game with the Walla Walla Reserve, and spent a night at the Elks' Club. We feel they should be commended for their outstanding achievements. Then Dayton lost a heartbreaker to the highly rated Colfax Bulldogs. Dayton then won four straight games before dropping a close one to ever-jinxing Ritzville. This loss seemingly put the needed fire into the Bulldogs, for they went on to trounce Lapwai 33-12. Dayton finished the season with a high scoring Armistice Day victory over rival Pomeroy by a score of 44-19. At the annual football banquet Lawrence Ackerman was named co-captain of the squad, selected best lineman and also chosen for the inspirational award. Jack Thompson was named as co-captain, and Mike Montgomery was selected as best back field player. The team composed of freshmen and sophomores compiled a record of five wins and one loss. Their only loss -X of the season was to the Pomeroy JV's,14- 13. They then turned the table on Pomeroy in the return match with a 19-13 victory. N This exceptionally good year gave Coach T Ihrke the Dayton Coach of the Year award.
