P '4 TO THE STUDENTS OF DAYTON HIGH OF 1954: This year makes die one hundredth anniversary of public schools in our state. Texas citizens everywhere have been examining their school systems to determine the progress made and wherein, if any, our schools are falling short of meeting present day educa- tional requiremenrs. For better schools now, and in the future, your help is needed. There are one or two things that I would like to call no your attention. Consider the opportunity offered you no improve your educational background by taking comses, not because they are reputed to be easy or because you like that teacher, but because you need such a course. Please do not be sa tisf ie d with just a passing grade. Put a little time and effort into all of your school endeavors if you wish to get something out of the years that you spend in school. What are your vocational plans for the future? May I urge you no consider seriously the field of teaching. The shortage of teachers is serious, and we never can have enough GOOD ones! J .

t r N w '4 Wieuage To the Students: As we travel down the avenue of life, there are some things which we hope may come true. There are others we believe to be true. As a result of our convictions and knowledge, there are other things we know to be true. One of the things I know to be true is that it is better to be kind than unkind. It can be made even stronger--it is better to love than to hate. Kindness is by no means all that the world needs. There is a need for understanding, patience, wisdom, service, sacrifice. But kindness helps so much as a practical medium in the give-and-take rela- tionships of life. It makes home a better place in which to live. lt gives to the office a more congenial atmosphere. lt developes lasting ties in the classroom. It makes life more pleasant for one who buys and one who sells. In the council rooms of those charged with responsibilities of state a little more kindness, supported by the deeper emotion of unselfish concern, might make the difference between war and peace. I am convinced that Goethe was right when he wrote, 'Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together. This thing I know to be true---it is better to be kind than unkind. Sincerely, Kim
