Mrs. DoroThy HuTTon, Columbus millinery designer, also helped by providing some oT her original designs. And Then The mosT imporTanT evenT oT The year, The AThleTic Queen Con- TesT. The classes were on Their sTarTing lines waiTing To see who will be The winna'. RepresenTing The seniors was Mary Parks: juniors, BeTTy Graham: and The wonderful sophomores, Phyllis Huri. All us chillian's wenT To The Ten Ace- AlTroo Dance on March 29. AT The music conTesT on March 22 aT WesTminsTer Church, Norman Hoyer and Bing Crosby won awards. AThleTic awards were given To The baskeTbaII players and among Them of course were our sophomore heroes. Mr. Jukebox provided us wiTh sen- TimenTal music aT The TeeneTTes' Twirl, April IZ. On April 25, we enioyed a VarsiTy BanqueT in honor of The Beaver BoosTers. We were Thrilled To deaTh ThaT we had won The AThleTic Queen conTesT. Our queenie was Phyllis Huri. OuTsTanding sophs were Elmer LuTh- man and Phyllis Huri. They were presenT- ed wiTh medals by a represenTaTive from The Sons of The American RevoluTion. We enioyed The plays very much wiTh KeiTh WolTram The only sophomore Tak- ing parT. CandidaTes Tor Queen of The Pin Wheel Prom, a Tormal given by The Y Teens were Corky Helman, senior, and Lois WesT and Shirley Brodnick, sophs. Wow, ThaT year sure wenT TasT. JusT Think, we'll be big Juniors nexT year, we ThoughT. Feeling a year older and looking Tor- ward To The big year ahead, we marched bravely up The sTeps of our school ready To cope wiTh any siTuaTion. BuT when we saw our schedules we were ready To Turn around and walk ouT and we muTTered, I ThoughT This year was going To be a cinch, huh. How could we ever geT used To This Two week period sTuTT? We were very happy To hear our ad- viser Tor The year would be Miss RuTh WersT. She prompTly inTormed us in OcTober we would be The proud new owners of our class rings. The Music DeparTmenT presenTed The opereTTa l-l. M. S. PinaTore on January 30-3I. Juniors having leading roles were Jeanne l-lauck, WalT Perry, Norman Hoyer, Bing Crosby, and Marilyn Kress. Many oT our boys received leTTers and cerTiTicaTes Tor cross-counTry. We were sure proud oT Them, Too. Gee whiz, iTs Time To sTarT checking our grades. IT's halT semesTer Time. Once again we approached The ATh- leTic Queen ConTesT. We were Teeling preTTy biTTer because The Junior Class had never in The hisTory oT The school won The conTesT. WhaT a iinx, we ThoughT! AT exacTly Three o'clock on February 27, we iusT abouT broke our necks Tear- ing down The sTeps To geT our class rings. WhaT a day! Bing Crosby and Norman l-loyer, Jeanne Hauck, and WalT Perry received awards Tor Their singing aT The music conTesT on February 28 aT The WesT- minsTer PresbyTerian Church.

lllillllil UT THT EU SepTember IO, l945, To July 3I, I948. Whew, whaT a sTruggle! ATTer Twelve long years oT sTudying and worrying, The day oT graduaTion is near Tor The Class of '48. . . . . Our TirsT day oT bewildermenT began on Monday, SepTember IO, I945, when a group of greenies called sophomores enTered The building for The TirsT Time. Oh, whaT a hecTic Time we had geTTing schedules correcTed, Tinding homerooms, and learning Teachers' names. New To The school aT The opening of The year was The reTurn oT Miss RuTh WersT aTTer a leave oT absence, The re- Turn of The driver Training class, and a new music Teacher, Mrs. EdiTh Jacobson. The TirsT school acTiviTy was The dance WiTch's WaTch given by Beaverines. Cross-counTry was now over and members oT our class on The Team were Bill Turney, Gene PreTTyman, and Elmer LuThman. Assemblies were held in OcTober To inTroduce The Junior AchievemenT com- panies. Many sTudenTs signed small admiTTance cards and were laTer noTiTied concerning cerTain radio sTaTions, man- uTacTuring companies, and a sTenograph- ic group. A member oT our class, Shirley Nelson, won second place in a ciTy wide essay conTesT on DDDC, DayTon DisTricT Devel- opmenT CommiTTee. On Friday, Novem- ber 9, a sophomore, Rosemary BarT- schmidT, won The Prince oT Peace Decla- maTion conTesT. Happy day! Thanksgiving vacaTion was November 22 To 25. December Dip, a gala aTTair, was given by Club I8 on December 7. We were enTerTained by The jukebox and Jack Wymer and Charley Reeder oT WING. There was Tormed a Beaver BoosTer's -UP ElllSS UT llllli Club Tor sTudenTs aTTending all The baskeTball games during The season. We enjoyed our TirsT hilarious ChrisT- mas assembly wiTh Howard Massman, prinTing Teacher, acTing as SanTa Claus and how convincing he was in red shorTs Trimmed wiTh whiTe Tur. WiTh Mr. Jukebox as The music maker we aTe and danced aT The Re- Tailer's Ramble given by The George- Dean Club now known as The FRO. For record purposes, we gladly yielded and had our mugs phoTographed, al- Though we broke The camera. For The records, They Tell us. The Beaver Hi-Y Dance was January 28, and we walTzed To The music of Al Sprauer. Earl Morgan's orchesTra Turnished The Tunes aT a ValenTine Dance given by The P.-T. A. Tor kids. On January 23, iT was announced our sophomore adviser would be Miss Mary KosT. We Then sTarTed The Task oT geTTing oTTicers. Those elecTed were: Elmer LuTh- man, pres., Shirley Brodnick, vice-pres., PaT ShulTz, sec., George EsselsTein, Treas. Our TaculTy grew aT This poinT wiTh Two addiTions. They were Miss Ann Edwards, music, and Miss Thelma Black, English. Hum, whaT Tun! The InTer-Club Coun- cil sponsored dances aTTer school on Tuesdays. You know,'iusT a geT TogeTher. Our class had iTs members being a winner in every acTiviTy. Bob Galey capTured The Golden Gloves crown in The BanTamweighT division. Yippee! We had a Tree day iusT abouT righT here, WashingTon's BirThday. The Clare G. Sharkey ChapTer oT The NaTional Junior Honor SocieTy was TirsT inauguraTed by The Class oT '48 wiTh The assisTance oT Mary KosT, advisor. Also Tor The TirsT Time we had our own paper

On March I3, The sophomores pre- senTed a sTyle show sponsored by Rike's. Juniors parTicipaTing were Phil I-Iuri, DoT Conley, Virginia ArmsTrong, Shirley Brodnick, Bob Caldwell, and Elmer LuTh- man. The Music DeparTmenT provided The musical background. The CaT's NighT OuT was The TiTIe oT The parTy given by The Junior Class on March 2I. The junior candidaTe Tor AThleTic Queen was Wanda Arvin, Sec. I. VarsiTy C's were awarded our junior boys Tor baske+baII and a megaphone awarded The junior cheerleader. Harry James and Tommy Dorsey on record played Tor The Garden 6aiT on April 3 sponsored by The AITroo Club. On May 2 and I6 were The daTes of The Junior-Senior Plays. Shirley Nelson, Bill Turney, Bill VonDerau, Shirley Brod- nick, KeiTh Brunk, and Jim Davis had parTs in The plays. The Square ShuTTle was a dance The juniors had Tor Themselves. Didn'T we have Tun learning To square dance? ThaT's someThing ThaT we can puT in our memory books. The Senior Honor SocieTy held Their inducTion on April l8, and TwenTy juniors were Taken inTo The socieTy. The AThIeTic Queen conTesT was now in Tull swing. BerT MarTin and Ramona Siegel were on The commiTTee Tor The dance The Club I8 gave on May 23 and called STardusT STroII. The aThIeTes and cheerleaders were honored aT a special parTy on May 22 by The P.-T.A. We had our Junior-Senior Prom on July I8. Earl Holderman played dreamy music Trom 9 To I2. Juniors in The courT oT The coronaTion of The King and Queen were Dick Topp, Jim Zimmerman, RiTa Bergemeier, and Shirley Brodnick. We were shocked upon hearing The news oT The reTiremenT oT our principal, Clare Sharkey. An assembly was given in his honor, and our class presenTed him wiTh a porTabIe radio. A The Third week oT SepTember we en- Tered The school building Tor our IasT year. JusT Think, our I2Th year. Didn'T The name senior sound wonderful? This year sTarTed To be a hard year oT sTudy so we puT ourselves To The grind- sTone and sTored our vacaTion memories back of our minds. Beaverines sponsored Their annual I-Iallowe'en dance OcTober 3I. They call- ed iT The KaT's Kaper. WiTh Miss RuTh WersT as our adviser we sTarTed ouT acTiviTies early. OTTicers Tor The year were: SecTion I SecTion II PresidenT Bill Turney Carl EiTerT Yice-PresidenT BeTTe WighTman Phyllis I-Iuri SecreTary PaT Luce Sue Granzow Treasurer Maurice Krug WaI+ Reinhard SergeanT-aT-Arms Al Fischer Wesley Newsome One Third oT The year was gone and clubs were iniTiaTing, sporTs were in The groove, and everyone was sTudying like mad. We began Thinking oT graduaTion: picTures, announcemenTs, and gowns were uppermosT in our bewildered minds. Marjorie Suman won The Prince of Peace DecIamaTion medal in which many members oT each class parTicipaTed. Phyllis I-Iuri and Shirley Brodnick were The senior cheerleaders This year. Our baske+balI Team was working very hard. My how Time Tlies. IT was ChrisT- mas holidays and SanTa was real good To us because we had one week Tree.
