The Model Raulroad By Paul Slarrclt Last October Mr Kunsman un duscussung wuth Paul and Dan Starrett varuous subjects concernung Physucs fwhuch class had just been dusmussedj arruved on the very unterestung topuc of raulroads Mr Kunsman a model raulroad fan untroduced hus hobby to the boys Wuth rusung enthusuasm they lustened to hum as he descrubed to them the HO fHalf O Q scale model trams the realusm of whuch had so greatly amazed hum Not many days after thus the Starrett boys were workung on a small model locomotuve fless than seven unches longl and Mr Kms man had hus model raulroad puke at school where he was constantly addung to ut Dan Paul and Mr Kmsman worked together on the raulroads untul March when Mr Kunsman who had been entertaunung the udea for quute a whule suggested that a modal raulroad club be started It was decuded that ut would be better to start wuth a small membershup After the selectuon of two boys who were thought to be the most unterested the matter was announced un assembly by Mr Kunsman For a few weeks the school paud no attentuon to thus and the fuve members Mr Kmsman Dan and Paul Starrett Donald Bly and Warner Forbes buult a table un the Physucs laboratory and started layung track Mr Kmsman s swutch yard whuch was already completed served as a very good starter for the puke Two days after sux more feet of track fapproxumately S76 scale feetj were laud and un two weeks the maun lune was funushed At the end of Aprul about 48 feet of track fapproxumately 4 608 scale feetj were down The club accepted one new member Nanette Mangels un Aprul and then closed uts mem bershup wuth a wautung lust of fourteen boys and gurls anxuous to joun Besudes two locomotuves a camel back 0 4 0 swutcher buult by Mr Kunsman and an O 8 0 swutcher buult by Dan and Paul Star rett the puke has now sux reefer cars two automobule cars two crummues Ccaboosesj a flat car a hopper and a Pullman coach The complucated maze of track uncludes a crossover buult by Mr Kunsman and Dan and Paul Starrett four turnout and yard swutches buult by Mr Kunsman and a sudung swutch buult by Donald Bly Three more swutches are now under construction Warner Forbes who us un charge of the buuldung constructuon desugned a town whuch us very well set up Besudes the buuldungs and town there are a statuon baggage stop round house freught shed unterlockung tower and water tower The puke means a great deal more to uts members than any machune made push button affaur ever meant to any chuld The reason for ut us thus -every unch of track tues and roadbed was laud by hand All buuldungs statuons rollung stock swutches locomotuves -even the wurung of the track and lughts was done by hand Every but of the puke us home made I I I I I I I IMI I I'1l'l l-I I I III IHIl'I'lll IllIll l I I I lu I' Illl 'IulllVIilI I I 'I 'I Iu'I I I'l l'l'l4ulul1l'I I I I I I - v , . . u 1 - u au - - - u - - u - 11 . , , . - 1 1 , .
