And, in 1972, Fred Nallia began his teaching career at Dawson Springs High School. In the past six years we have grown - physically, mentally, and emotionally - and he was always there to guide us along. Mr. Nallia has done so much for D. H. S. On top of teaching history and government, he has sponsored the Pep Club, Beta Club, and the Senior Class. He was at every home game - selling tickets, supervising the Coke sales, and cheering the Panthers on to victory. He works year round at the school - teaching and driving the bus during the academic year, and getting the building ready for another year during the summer. Because he has done so much for the school and the class of '77, we would like to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Fred W. Nallia. Fearless, this one's for you! 20 21 SENIORS . . ARE ON THEIR LAST GO 'ROUND. 22 GAY LA BA UCUM Gayla is always able to find some- thing funny in everything that hap- pens. CATHY ELI Cathy is one of the few original members of the DSHS graduating class of '77. She has always gone to school here. She has been working at the Health Care Center this year. When we asked her what she might be like in 25 years she said, I'll probably be mar- ried with a couple of kids. Best of Luck, Cathy! RITA GRISHA M JACK FROST Jack is always the victim of cir- cumstantial evidence. It seems he’s always at the wrong place (West Hopkins) at the wrong time (the rest of his senior year). We still love you, even if you were forced to desert us! DEB BY GRANT It seems like only yesterday when Debby moved here from Colorado. She's always smiling and fiddling with her senior ring. She's not sure about her future. She would like to either join the Army or some other branch of the service, or go to trade school and become a laboratory or X-ray technician. Best of Luck, CINDY FRANKLIN Cindy is a very lucky girl. She was a senior candidate for homecom- ing, and is this year's DAR (Daughter of the American Revolution) recipient! Best of Luck, Kim!! f SHERRI NICHOLS Sherri is the other Superstar of the Senior class. She not only plays basketball but she finds time to be that crazy girl we all know and love. Somewhere in the near future we are going to be hearing wedding bells. Best of Luck, Sherri. KIM PERRIN Kim is one of the most talented girls in our sen- ior class. She has done most of the art work for our class when we spon- sored any activities. She plans to either keep working at The Place or go back to Vocational School and become an architect, and with her talent we know she'll have little trouble, if any. Good Luck! The class of '77 wishes you the Best of Luck! 32 SCOTT SHELTON Scott - who else do you know who can be so crazy one minute and entirely serious die next? But that's the charm of this rascal. He's also the only guy we know who can pro- crastinate 'til the last minute, yet still come through with flying col- ors! Always on the go in that big Cutlass - you can look up and find him anywhere. We wish you the best of luck for the future, Scott!! MELISSA SIMONS Melissa is one of the more pleasing sights at the senior class. She is very popular with every- one, and was last year's Homecoming Queen. Now she is a varsity cheerleader and one of DSHS Panthers' most avid fans. The class wishes you the best of luck to follow. JEFF SUMMERS Jeff is a prototype of the senior class in '77. Fun-loving, crazy, but always ready to stand up for the right. Big-UN, as he is affec- tionately called, is a very popular member of the class, and is bound to be a successful one as well. Best of Luck, Jeff! MIKE STORMS Mike is one of the sen- ion who likes being a senior. Having the expe- rience of 12 years of schooling, he is able to cope well with any prob- lem which might arise. Working at Storm's anti- ques, he has had room for many to arise. Best of Luck, Mike from the class of '77. 33 34 TERRI YOUNG Terri is a mid-term graduate of DSHS, although her spirit lingers on. She is known for her decorating ability, and for her good looks. Undecided about her life, she is a sure bet to be successful in whatever she does. Best of Luck, Terri! THOMAS Tim is another of the mechanical minded members. As a result, he is able to get more out of a motor than most people, as proven by his abil- ity to drag race. Tim also helps his Oad read water meters, and there- fore is into the numbers” racket. Best of Luck, Tom!! JON WINFREY Jon is our President, he's always there coming up with new ideals and solving problems. Jon knows exactly what he is supposed to do only somehow he never gets around to doing it. Jon has no plans for his future after graduation, but whatever it is we know he will succeed, because that's the way Jon is, Best of Luck from the class of '77. JOEY MILLER Joey is a free spirited member of the class. Nothing is too far-out for him and because of that, he is one of the craziest seniors ever. Working at Family Drugs driving the delivery truck, he is always on the road. Best of Luck, Joe. IN MEMOR Y OF A LLISON BARBER Allison’s death was a tragic loss for many reasons: She had a vitality and love for life that few young people her age pos- sess . She was a member of one of the most unusual classes at DSHS, and a vital addition to the fun-loving and care-free group. She'll be missed by many of us, but she will never be far away as long as we have this record of her. Above: One of the last school pictures that Allison had made. Right: During one of her skits for a class at DSHS. Below: Caught in a casual moment, with that familiar smile. Here are just a few of the comments that her fellow class- mates had to say about her: 1 remember Allison’s smile best of all. It seems like a bad dream now, but I'll never forget her.” Easy-going, always smiling, real nice chick to be around. Allison was really a terrific person. She was a happy-go- lucky girl . . . ready to listen if you had a problem. 35 MR. AND MISS CITIZENSHIP This year's seniors have always believed in doing everything dif- ferent, and this year is no excep- tion. We had a tie for Mr. Citi- zenship, so we just included both boys in the picture. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT ARE: Tim Carlton, Sherri Nichols, and Ion Winfrey. Below you see our school leaders in their more casual moments. 36 MR. A ND MISS DSHS CLASSES . . . It takes a lot of hustle and hard work, not to mention dedication, to do a good job. The Panthers do just that every day. Sometimes the results aren't always visible to the fans, however, and the team suffers each time that they're not backed by their support- ers. This year just wasn't our year for tremendous victory, but victory, imponant as it is, isn't the whole game. Willpower and determination and good sportsmanship are also the essentials of a good game. And in this department, boys, you are definitely NUMBER ONE! Like the boys, the girls weren't destined to have a winning team this year, but we can sure see improvement with every game, and we know how much they have improved since last year. With the spunk and drive these young girls have, we're expecting to see some tremendous things from them in the coming years. PANT About mid-November, the student body noticed something new about the Panther ball team: their gold T-shirts with a new slogan printed in purple: W + w = V. When asked what it meant, they replied, Work plus Willpower equals Victory. Well, it wasn't really a season of victory, but it certainly was a season of tremendous work and willpower on the part of our boys. The junior high boys are to be commended for their season. With the kind of spirit and determination and success they displayed this year, we are in store for some really terrific years ahead in the sports field. 2 . ________________________________________________________________________________________ BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Rhonda Collins, Traci Menser, Melissa Simons, Kim Goodwin. As I watched it being stamped, all of my joys and thrills of being a yearbook editor passed before me. The joys of watching Pam, Mitzi, and Carla tum out the classes secion in a single week (it usually takes at least three), of seeing Nancy everywhere with her camera, of watching Kerry get every business in the proper ad, and of understanding that the hurry-up' demands of Mrs. Bailey were meant for the good of the book, gave way to only one other thrill. That was the trill of actually having control of this crazy, fun-loving, and utterly astounding group of people. I felt pride in each of the layouts they had approved, and felt the sorrow of each one rejected. It was all one big happy family, and I was lucky enough to be asked to head it. Now I ask you to look ahead. The staff which produced this book, except for Nancy, Teresa, Tim, and myself, will be back on the scene next year. The experience they have gained this year will show in next year’s book, different layout designs, ads, and people. The class of '77 will be gone, but the Panther tradition will remain. The pride of the school is shown in the pride of the staff, and that pride demands the best of every single individual. This book is part of that pride, and we can only hope that it transfers that feeling to the town itself. So, in conclusion, I say that this book is not my yearbook, nor the staff's, nor the school's, but yours. Respect it, and honor it, and maybe even love it as we do. Scott Shelton, Editor-in-Chief New Horizons '77 S3
