IN MEMORIAM to Mr. R. A. Belt What do you say when a great man dies ? You say little at first because you are too shocked and numbed by his pass- ing to express your feelings in words. Later, after the initial shock has passed, you try to comfort a sorrowing family and grieving friends. Great men are hard to find, especially men who would dedicate themselves unselfishly to one school for thirty years. What do you say when a good man dies? You tell his companion, his widow, how self- giving and hard-working he was. He was a respected member of the community and a devoted family man. He adored his children, and they, in turn, adored him. Perhaps his widow knows best how strong and determined he really was when he knew he was right and set out to prove it. What do you say when a civic-minded man dies? You say little. It will be hard to refill the positions he filled so capably for so many years. The Rotary and other organizations miss him greatly. He served his community well, for he knew that only through the joint effort of all the people can a community truly survive and prosper. He laid the foundations for some of our town's largest projects, and no problem was too large for him to overcome. What do you say when a God-fearing man dies? There are few words needed here. For, if someone has served as a deacon and as head of many different church committees and as right-hand man to his pastor, his reward will surely be eternal rest with God, our Creator. A man serves man-kind best who serves his God first. Superintendent Rupert A. Belt was all of these things: a great man, a good man, a family man, a civic-minded man, and a God-fearing man. He served untiringly as Superin- tendent of our school for almost thirty years. When a man has given that much of his life to a cause, the cause must be good. And, indeed, the cause is good. The best memorial that we as students can give to Superintendent R. A. Belt is our deepest respect and de- votion to this school and to the principles for which it stands. Mr. Belt would have wanted us to give our greatest support to help our school move forward as it has so often done during the past thirty years. Yes, Superintendent Rupert A. Belt is sorely missed. 2
