MARY NELSON' A BRIEF HISTORY OF DAWSON SCHOOL By Mrs L H Klnder O Dawson School came lnto bemgwhen several small schools IH the 1mmed1ate area were com blned, 1n 1938 Mr J L Chlles was the flrst superlntendent Mr Thomas C Martm was h1gh school prmc1pal, coach and h1story teacher Mrs Jewel Mclver was the elementary pr1nc1pa1 Other teacher s 1n that f1rst year were Mr A B Reece Mrs Andy Adams M1ss Jean Duff Mrs Bertha Payne and Mlss Grace Harvell and Mrs L H Kmder Classes were begun m September before the h1gh school bxuldmg was completed Some hlgh school classes were held ln the old Fa1rv1ew Teacherage wh1ch was placed between the present lunch room and the hlgh school bulldxng s The 5th 6th and 7th grades were ln the Methodlst Church and the Znd 3rd and 4th grades were housed ln the B M A Bapt1st Church whlch was located on the street west of Mr L1sle's house The lst grade used what IS now the Agrlculture bu1ld1ng The new buxldmg and the gym were ded1cated xn the sprmg and class rooms were moved The 3rd, and 4th grades were moved to the bu1l d1n g now used as the cafeterla The old FQITVICW teacherage was sold to Raymond Preston and was moved to a lot south of the school ground There was a SIX man football team the f1rst and second years but was dlscontmued untxl 1951 Nelther team dld much 1n the way of w1nn1ng The Dawson basketball teams d1d much better Durlng the flrst years of the school fmances were the b1g problem Teachers had to dlscount then' vouchers, athletlc equlpment was pa1d for out of proceeds from ple suppers box suppers donat1ons and any other way thata few dollars m1ght be obtamed O11 was dlscovered ln the chs tr1ct and the f1nanc1al s1tuat1on has been much better Followlng Mr Ch1lesasSuper1ntendent wehavehad Mr Loyd Pyle Mr Ralph Ranson Mr C E Green Mr AH Cheek and presently Mr C L Mltchell The present board of trustees conslsts of M C Lmdsey Presxdent Custer Leatherwood Secretary Rusty Burkett Bryan Wr1ght Hubert Beard Dewey Drennan and Eldon Vance new high school building housed all of the high school, plus the lst, 5th, 6th, and 7th grades .
