The 1942-43 Basketball Team, COC1Ched by Mr- WOHGH P- Byrumhad the honor of bringing a city championship in a major sport to Davis Tech. A quintette of exceptional players, excellent reserves, and a large follow-ing of enthusiastic fans enabled Coach Byrum to lead the Wildcats to victory after victory throughout the closely contested season. Although the Wildcats were defeated by Central, 29-26, in their first city game, Wins were scored over Christian, 29-24, 35-23, Union, 33-26, 19-l5g Creston, 18-165 and Ottawa, 37-34, 36-20. Besides their first game the Wildcats lost to Holland Christian, 27-175 to South, 35-33, and to Catholic, 35-33. The second game with Central proved to be a thriller. The lead see-sawed several times with Zwartenkot capturing the top score for Tech in the last seconds of play. ln the first game with Union the Wildcats Went on a rampage and defeated Union by seven points. Nixon was high point man with Hoebeke and Zwartenkot following closely. On April 22, the champions were honored by the faculty at a banquet at East Congregational Church, after which they were entertained at Coach Byrum's home with motion pictures. After capturing the City Championship, the team partici- pated in the Basketball Area Tournament in Grand Rapids. In the semi-finals round Tech defeated Central, 42-3l. The Track Team, under the leadership ot Mr. Warren P. Byrum, had an average season this year with a number of regulars on the squad. The fans marvelled at Al Offringa's combined speed and excellent form in the hurdles. At the time of this writing, he had piled up Z4 points in only three meets. Following close behind Otfringa, Versil Vallier acquired three firsts in the high jump, a total of 15 points. lack Klunder, the best dash man in the squad, has run up a high total also. Bud Elve has developed into an exceptional 440 yard man. Louis Budznski excelled in the 880 yard event. Ed. Dubiel gathered 13 points in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and also in the broad jump and relays. Walt McVeigh and Frank Brinky Nawara ran up a grand total ot 19 points in pole vault and shot put. lack Van Vels did very well in the mile as did Leonard Zurawski in the dashes.
