Company, attention! Right face. Right shoulder arms. 'Forward arms. Forward march. These commands Certainly are familiar sounds to those who are members of the R.O.T.C. companies in this school. The officers of the company have been drilling hard in preparation for the big event of the season, M day, as it is called by the boys. ' The War Depart- ment describes it as Federal lnspection and Field Day. Tech will compete With all the other high schools in the city. The R.O.T.C. unit was requested by the students. The R.O.T.C. WGS added to the school's activities this year. lts purpose is to promote citizenship, leadership, and teach the fundamentals of military discipline. The Work con- sists of instructions in courtesy, first aid, rifling, map-reading, marching, drilling, scouting, and personal hygiene. The boys have two experienced instructors, Sergeant I. C. Gaberdiel and Sergeant S. Siegel, from the regular army. Two boys have been selected as captains, Tom Zaleorus in the morning group and Bob Mulder in the afternoon group. All R.O.T.C. cadets are given instructions in the manual of arms and have severe training in physical fitness, marching, and drilling. The Bond Drive, organized for the purpose of paying for a pursuit ship, surpassed all expectations in its success. Under the expert and enthusiastic direction of Mr. Glockzin and Miss Davenport, faculty advisers, Tech students and teachers rallied to the great task and in the 30 days of the drive, exceeded the goal of SlU0,0UU by 559,560 The drive was effectively started at a special assembly program including patriotic selections by the band and choir, community singing, and pep talks by the student co-chairmen, Barbara Davis and Eugene Krygier, and climaxed with an inspiring address by Mr. Lee Mulnix, executive chairman of the Grand Rapids War Savings Committee. Lawrence Kozminski, a former student and member of the Navy, gave a brief, but extremely convincing talk on the absolute necessity of supporting the armed forces. The city was divided into sections, each having a chairman, and a special division of students worked in the downtown area. Much credit must be given to the students who sold stamps and bonds in the booths in stores, and to Maxine Wells, who devoted her time to promote the drive in the school. FIRST ROW I. Bohr, A.
