He was selected from a great number of applicants because of his reputation as an upstanding, honest man, his influ- ence among boys in Boy Scout Work, and because he was one of the best designers and furniture Workers in the city of Grand Rapids. He has proven in his long connection with the school that his repu- tation Was not exaggerated. His influence upon the many boys who have come in contact with him has been to the great advantage of everyone. Mr. Holmberg is not only looked up to by the students and faculty of the school, but men in industry respect his judgment on boys for their plants. He has been an untiring Worker for the good of the school and has never failed to respond when asked to do Work that would further the interest of any boy or girl in the city, Whether connected with our school or some other school. In the resignation of Mr. Holmberg, the Davis Vocational and Technical High School loses one of its most valued teachers, one that We all shall miss. We can never find a man that has all of the personal 'and professional qualities that Mr. Holmberg has. He has lived a full life and has been able to maintain his good nature under all conditions. It is the Wish of the faculty and students of Davis Tech that Mr. Holmberg live many years to enjoy life and continue in his service to boys and girls outside of school. I I 1 i 1 i I 1 To Herman Holmberg, we, the Class of 1943, do hereby dedicate this, our Beacon, with the deepest gratitude and sincerest appreciation for his Whole-hearted devotion to the interest of the boys and girls of Davis Tech during the past twenty-tour years. 4 -,,.-- f The class of 1943 is leaving school to enter upon a very serious job. In all probability all of you will either be in the Armed Forces or be doing war work before another annual is published. The faculty and the principal trust that they have instilled in you a desire to do your part for your country, to be honest in all of your endeavors, and to always remember that the country does not owe you any- thing but that you owe the country everything. We sincerely hope that you will fulfill your obligations and when this War is over you will come back to take yourrightful place in the industrial and civic life of the city of Grand Rapids. May your efforts be crowned with success and may you be spared to help in the reconstruction of America after the War. Our best Wishes go with you Wherever you go. GEORGE B. FRAZEE, IR. PRINCIPAL Never in the history of the school has Q graduating class been called upon to face the problems that the class of 1943 will be called upon to face. Most of the boys will serve in the armed forces of our country. The girls will go into factories and be called upon to take the places of the boys who are already in service. I feel sure that you will all be more than Willing to do your share. I know we will be proud of each and every one. My sincerest wishes for your success and safety. From these loved halls and friends we part, With memories and sadness in our hearts. We go forth armed with knowledge to fight The enemy, to preserve our rights, With heads held high and spirits strong, To help our country right the wrong. No man can crush our spirit of youth, Our knowledge of justice, honor and truth. To our dear school we say a prayer Of thankfulness, cmd bid farewell. By Betty Nelson Beyond the years our fates unknown, Fruits we shall reap by what we've sown Though we may never meet again, We'll ne'er forget our school and friends. Forward, onward, yes, we will tread, For other classes years have sped. Always onward with heads held high, While trusting eyes search bluer skies. Grateful to teachers we shall be, We of the class of forty-three. With knowledge gained and honors gleaned Bravely we face futures unseen. Chorus: Faithful ever to dear Tech High, Our loyalty shall never die. Praises and song arise to thee, From our class of forty-three. Hmmm Good Cup .... Rose Cup . . . Honor T's . .. No Beacon this year? Such ci possibility faced the class of '43 when school opened last fall. But one by one the obstacles were surmounted. First, through the failure of a company to tale all the paper it ordered, it was found the staff could get the exact pre- priorities paper they desired. Covers also could be secured out of existing stocks if they were ordered early. Still another possible difficulty vanished when it was learned that new cuts could be secured if all obsolete engravings were sold to metal dealers. The last and greatest problem was the actual printing of the Beacon. As Mr. Harrison Was obliged to teach both the com- position and press classes, it was feared it might not be possible to do the printing in school. Through the coopera- tion of the senior class advisers and Mr. Harrison, a plan was Worked out by which the members of the printing class could Work Saturdays and thus preserve the tradition of printing the annual in the school shop. The 1943 staff feels greatly honored in being the first Beacon staff to receive awards. Miss Parkhurst and Mr. Smith, with the approval of Mr. Frazee, made it possible to purchase the beautiful gold pins with class funds. FIRST ROW B Groenink, organization editor, L. Wing and composed of 106 youths, is Well-known in Grand Rapids as one of the finest and largest school choirs in the city. Their singing has kept numerous beautiful melodies alive in many hearts. Wherever they sing, at U.S.O. centers, business men's clubs, churches, schools, or on the air, they light the candle of hope and faith that America must have in order to win complete victory. One of the most successful performances ever presented by the music department was the joint band and choir Annual Spring Concert, April 9. The songs that came from the hearts and lips of the joyous young singers found their Way into the very being of the large, appreciative audience. Making a delightful program still more enjoyable was the appearance of Noble Cain, celebrated composer, conductor, and critic, who led the massed choir and band in one of his newest composi- tions, Ode to America, which closed a very impressive and enjoyable concert. But that Was not the end, for the refrain continually singing in the hearts of the Davis Tech choir is: Keep fighting, keep winning, keep singing, Americal Second Choir E FRONT ROW: F, Wlgightsel, G. Davis, true to its tradition of splendid performance, has brought great enjoyment and inspiration to Tech students? teachers, and patrons throughout the year. , . The band has been an essential part of all the more impor- tant assemblies. At football and basketball games, it has stirred the students and teachers to greater enthusiasm. At the annual Birthday Party, to which the parents were invited, and at the Bond Drive assembly its members were a vital part of the program. Cooperating with the senior class, the band rendered choice selections at the Senior Play. Also, at the request of the senior class, the band played at the Class Day exercises and Com- mencement. An outstanding out-of-school appearance was at the Golden Gloves Tournament, where an excellent program honored the armed services. The green and White uniformed musicians of Davis Tech have also been favorites of spectators at several civic parades, including Santa Claus, the Memorial Day, the Flag Day, and the Navy Parades. To conclude a successful year, the band was graciously received at the annual Band and Choir Concert by the stu- dents, parents, and music lovers of Grand Rapids. To close this program, the band joined with the massed choirs and under the direction of the guest artist, Noble Cain, played his latest creation, 'lOde to America. FRONT ROW: R. Kyser, R. Beuker, T. Under the expert and enthusiastic direction of Mr. Glockzin and Miss Davenport, faculty advisers, Tech students and teachers rallied to the great task and in the 30 days of the drive, exceeded the goal of SlU0,0UU by 559,560 The drive was effectively started at a special assembly program including patriotic selections by the band and choir, community singing, and pep talks by the student co-chairmen, Barbara Davis and Eugene Krygier, and climaxed with an inspiring address by Mr. Lee Mulnix, executive chairman of the Grand Rapids War Savings Committee. Lawrence Kozminski, a former student and member of the Navy, gave a brief, but extremely convincing talk on the absolute necessity of supporting the armed forces. The city was divided into sections, each having a chairman, and a special division of students worked in the downtown area. Much credit must be given to the students who sold stamps and bonds in the booths in stores, and to Maxine Wells, who devoted her time to promote the drive in the school. FIRST ROW I. Bohr, A. The debates and discussions have been on various subjects, but the main subject was, Resolved: That a Federal World Govern- ment Should Be Established. The coach, as well as all of the debaters, were beginners in the activity in this chool. At first, getting the materials together and commencing work was rather difficult for them. lt dicln't take them long to get into harness, however, and enjoyment and fun soon followed along with the work. The debates and discussions were conducted at the various high schools: South, Union, Central, Wyoming, Lee, Ottawa, and Kelloggsville. The team was divided into two groups, one taking the affirmative, and one taking the negative. Each group debated at different schools. Last October the debate team went to East Lansing to attend a debate clinic to get some inspiration for the project. Now at the end of the year of debating, this group can call the year successful as well as enjoyable. SEATED: Eleanor Tromp, loan Koolen, Ruth Poplaski. STANDING: julie Vander Veen, Rita Golembeski. It was presented May 7 in the South High Auditorium by a splendid cast of fifteen actors directed by Miss West and Miss Parkhurst. Supporting the cast was a large staff of hard-working students. The action takes place in the fashionable home of the Lorraine family. Laura Lorraine, Clda Fairchildl, the typical society matron, dominates her timid husband, Sam, fWalter Nowakowskil, much to the annoyance of Wayne Lorraine, tBernard Iohnsonl, Sam's younger brother. When news arrives that Susie Smith, tBetty Nelsonl, the daughter of a friend of Sam's is coming from Texas to pay a visit, Laura is hysterical, but Wayne sees a golden opportunity in Susie's visit and enlists her aid in making a man out of Sam. Susie descends upon the Lorraine household clad in a Western outfit. Iud has engaged two models to pose for him, Rita Pandro, fIulie Vander Veenl, and Sadie Applebaum, CViola Dykemal. He falls violently in love with Iane Smith, fIeanne Stottl, they be- come engaged, and Iud takes his fiancee to his studio where she sees the two models, thinks they are friends of his, and walks out on him. To still further complicate matters, the two enraged models, Iane, and her Aunt, CMary Iean Forbesj, arrive at the Lorraines', and poor Iud is in fear of his life. ln the meantime, Lola Lorraine, fMartha Milanl, Laura's pretty sister, has fallen in love with Cupie Clooney, fOtto Worpell, whom Laura has mistaken for the butler and set to work under the direction of Ioyce Farrow, fEileen Longcorel. Gamble The 42 Gridirdn SeCISOI1 began with the greatest en- thusiasm on the part of Coach Emery's Wildcats. They pos- sessed that never-give-in spirit for which Tech is known. On the practice tield they were whipped into shape, ready to compete with all on-corners. The team opened the season by defeating the Godwin eleven to the tune of 28-O. The battle with Catholic was con- sidered one of the most outstanding displays of fighting spirit witnessed in the city during the entire season. The game with South was one of the most decisive victories scored against that team in a number ot years. The tally at the end of the season stood at three 'ns, four losses, and one tie. Although the Wildcats sulflgred some setbacks during the season, they did not show the slightest indication of discour- agement but only practiced and played harder. The excellent sportsmanship ot the players and the loyalty of the student body enabled Tech to put up a good iight throughout the season. The team voted Ed. Dubiel the most valuable player. He also won a berth on the All-City Team, as did Fred Fairchild, Brinky Nawara, and Don Nixon. Nawara was captain ot the team. X ' -al- FIRST ROW F Strek, M. Quay, T. Iarmulowski, B. Nelson, R. The 1942-43 Basketball Team, COC1Ched by Mr- WOHGH P- Byrumhad the honor of bringing a city championship in a major sport to Davis Tech. A quintette of exceptional players, excellent reserves, and a large follow-ing of enthusiastic fans enabled Coach Byrum to lead the Wildcats to victory after victory throughout the closely contested season. Although the Wildcats were defeated by Central, 29-26, in their first city game, Wins were scored over Christian, 29-24, 35-23, Union, 33-26, 19-l5g Creston, 18-165 and Ottawa, 37-34, 36-20. The lead see-sawed several times with Zwartenkot capturing the top score for Tech in the last seconds of play. ln the first game with Union the Wildcats Went on a rampage and defeated Union by seven points. Nixon was high point man with Hoebeke and Zwartenkot following closely. On April 22, the champions were honored by the faculty at a banquet at East Congregational Church, after which they were entertained at Coach Byrum's home with motion pictures. After capturing the City Championship, the team partici- pated in the Basketball Area Tournament in Grand Rapids. In the semi-finals round Tech defeated Central, 42-3l. At the time of this writing, he had piled up Z4 points in only three meets. Following close behind Otfringa, Versil Vallier acquired three firsts in the high jump, a total of 15 points. lack Klunder, the best dash man in the squad, has run up a high total also. Bud Elve has developed into an exceptional 440 yard man. Louis Budznski excelled in the 880 yard event. Ed. Dubiel gathered 13 points in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and also in the broad jump and relays. Walt McVeigh and Frank Brinky Nawara ran up a grand total ot 19 points in pole vault and shot put. lack Van Vels did very well in the mile as did Leonard Zurawski in the dashes. Don Nixon, who handled the first sack was a sparkplug in the infield. l-le played only half the season, but his batting average was .500. Iim Beurkens, the other letter man, showed up with real talent in left field. When the season was half finished, the infield and outfield, were changed With Ioe Zbikowski as first baseman, Iim Beur- kens as catcher, Art Vander Baan in right field, and Iack Alcumbrack in left field. The timely hitting of Don Nixon and Art Vander Baan, and the pep and fire of Ioe Zbikowski kept the rest of the team constantly on their toes and in high spirits. Skuzinski, B. Schutich, M. Baltusis, I. Stakowalk D Nixon This year the Tennis Team had to contend with some very unfortunate conditions. The squad lost by gradua- tion some of the best players. The boys who might have made the team were so busy preparing to go into the armed services that they did not have time to practice regularly. The season was not successful from the standpoint of attendance or the Winning of games, but the schedule was maintained in order to keep tennis alive. Tennis is one of the greatest sports fostered by a school. The skills learned in this game carry over in later life and are a source of continued pleasure to men and Women after they leave school. The tennis team this season was coached by Mr. Kenneth Barnes. The boys who were able to take part Were enthusias- tic about the sport and were very disappointed that they did not have more time for practice and that more boys could not come out for the team. Next year conditions may be very different and the coach hopes to have a very fine tennis team. l. -T . 4 FRONT ROW: R. Eppinga, G. Vandenburg, R. Johnson. BACK ROW: E. Willison, R. During the past year the Varsi-T Club has promoted many Worthwhile activities and is very much indebted to Mr. Emery and Mr. Byrum, the advisers, for the fine cooperation they have given. A very popular event in the program of the club is the initia- tion. During the Week of this activity the lowly scums have to humble themselves. Big, husky tackles are seen dressed as girls, carrying dolls, and singing lullabies. The many stunts required reveal much new talent to the tune of the paddle. The club functions on a very democratic basis, every mem- ber being privileged to make suggestions which he thinks will benefit the whole group. Rules are enforced by an enforcer, the paddle.
