CITZSS club Originafing in India hundreds of years ago, chess is now 'rhe mosl' popular ancienl' game played. ln a sense il' is like classical music. Popular songs lasl a 'Few mon'rhs and lhen are forgo'Hen, whereas classical songs have lasled for cenruries. Modern games las+ a year or lwo and fhen vanish. Chess, fhough nol' al any lime as popular as fhese games, has been enjoyed by kings, queens, and olher nolables fhroughoul' +he years. Thus if is somelimes called 'rhe game of kings. To people who know nolhing abour lhe game, chess, of course, may seem very boring. However, +he players who make up rhe Tech +eam, which is picked from +he club, are exfremely inleresled and have proven lhemselves +he besl' high school leam in lhe cil'y. Lasl' year fhey ended l'he season unde- fealed, having made decisive scores over Chris+ian lacknowledged champions un+il lhey mel' lhe Tech leaml, Cenfral, and Soulh. A+ lhe 'rime lhis arlicle was wriH'en, Tech had defealed Chrislian in a very 'rhrilling game, 4-3, and were seeking meels wilh Junior College, Calvin College, and +he Universiry of Grand Rapids.

Under fhe direcfion of ifs presenf adviser, Mr. Hopper, fhe sfudenfs learn of fhe many new uses of phofography foday: in crime defecfion, in fhe making of maps, and in many greaf indusfries. ln fhe fall of l938 a handful of sfudenfs mef for fhe firsf Camera Club meefing in room 202. Af firsf fheir number was pififully small and if seemed fhaf fhe club would die in ifs infancy, buf fhrough fhe careful supervision of fhe faculfy adviser, Mr. Sfanley Johnson, fhe spark of life was kepf glowing and soon fhe club was a sfrong, prosperous organizafion. lf was a hard sfruggle on fhe parf of ifs able presidenf fo gain a new enlarger and dark room, and even fhen if seemed af fimes fhaf fhe club would fold up under ifs own weighf. Finally, however, if emerged vicforious by successfully making over fwo hundred enlargemenfs for nafional defense and lafer numerous ofher prinfs of Tech classes and acfivifies.

Every day a new sound is produced in a hundred differenf ways. Even Mr. Davis enlivens his expression of opinion wifh amusing commenfs. Consfanf changes in femperamenf, fempera- fure, and fempo make fhe bandroom one of fhe mosf inferesfing spofs in school. An unsolved mysfery sfill exisfs, for no one seems fo know whefher or nof 'fhe maesfro himself fool: an acfive parf in making fhe soundproof curfains which now grace fhe enfire room. Has anyone noficed fhe sfudied concenfrafion of fhe boys when +hey're playing? Here is a frown on fhe 'face of fhe flufe player, i'here's a blissfully happy counfenance gleaming from fhe coils of a huge horn, and every pair of feef keeping unquesfionable fime wifh 'rheir direcfor. The band's 'full schedule of appearances included foofball games, assemblies, fhe Spring Concerf, and fhe senior play. Hard work found Hs compensafions in fun and companionship never fo be forgoffen by 'rhe hundreds of fhe Green and Whife musicians.
