ophomore class history In lhe lall ol I939 lhere came lo Davis Tech a group ol lively sludenls who were enrolled in lhe freshmen class. The lirsl noleworlhy evenl was an eleclion ol olficers. Bernard Johnson was elecled presidenlg Marion Gill, vice-presidenlg Wanda Jarmuloski, secrelaryg Huberl Hoebeke, lreasurerg Regina Pachowski and Fred Fairchild, general chairmen. In lheir lirsl year lhe class sponsored lwo mixers, assisled wilh an all-school parly, and parlicipaled in an amaleur show. Their mosl imporlanl aclivily, however, was lhe Memorial Day Assembly al which lhe guesl speaker was Reverend E. A. Mohns ol Weslminsler Presby- lerian Church. The program included a piano solo by Dorolhy Drake, music by lhe Davis Tech Band, and several seleclions by lhe lreshman mixed quarlel which was composed ol Belly Nelson, Marion Gill, Roberl Conklin and Lewis Boynlon. The class raised money by collecling dues, having a giganlic paper sale, selling candy on Fridays, and paddle pops on hol days. When lhese lreshmen came back lhe nexl year, lhey were sophomores and expecled lo do more. ln lhe class eleclion Fred Fairchild was chosen presidenlg Wanda Jarmuloski, vice-presidenlg Viola Dykema, secrelaryg Dorolhy Kalinka, lreasurerg Marion Gill and Don Lellinga, general chairmen. The class ol '43 had a lull program lhis year wilh many evenls scheduled. The lirsl social evenl was lhe all-school skaling parly in which lhe sophomores shared responsibilily wilh lhe upper classmen. Proceeds were divided equally. On Friday, November 29, lhe Davis Tech annual Fun Fesl was held. For lhis lhe iuniors and sopohomores combined lorces and presenled a play which did very well. As is lhe cuslom, each class is alloled one assembly per year. This year lhe sophomore class presenled an assembly honoring lwo greal Americans, Wash- inglon and Lincoln. The program was begun wilh lhe assembly singing The Slar Spangled Banner. The presidenl, Fred Fairchild, inlroduced lhe speaker, Doclor Lesler A. Kilpalrick, paslor ol lhe Firsl Melhodisl Church. He gave an inleresling lalk on George Washinglon, American. Olher numbers on lhe program included a piano solo, by Dorolhy Drake, and several seleclions by lhe sophomore quarlel. Included among lhese seleclions was a number dedicaled lo Washinglon upon his inaugural iourney, and one wrillen by Slephen Fosler in Lincoln's lime which was descriplive ol our greal Civil War presidenl. Singing in lhe quarlel were Belly Nelson, soprano: Marion Gill, alloy Roger VandeKopple, lenorg and Lewis Boynlon, bass. The school band rendered a seleclion and lhe program closed wilh lhe audience singing God Bless America, led by lhe sophomore mixed quarlel. The iunior-sophomore review was given in lhe school gym al which a one- acl play enlilled Girl To Order was given. Dances and inslrumenlal and vocal seleclions were also presenled. Anolher all-school parly was given on April 4 and lhe sophomores likewise shared responsibilily and proceeds. ' The class ol '43, under lhe guidance ol lheir advisers, Miss Parkhursl and Mr. Smilh, hope lo make lheir remaining years al Davis Tech ones ol which lhe school may be proud.
