We feel adefinite and serious responsibility as to our part in molding and developing the attitudes and behavior of the students. Our fervent hope is that we have helped you to be earnest and thoughtful in arriving at decisions, firm and fair in your convictions, considerate of your fellow men and their beliefs, decisive and logical in organizing plans, appreciative of our great United States. May I commend you, the student body, the parents, and faculty, for the splendid progress made at Davis-Townsend School during the past severalyears. It has been a genuine pleasure to work with you and observe the accomplishments made. Your interest, enthusiasm, courage, and determination have made Davis-Townsend a better school for the boys and girls who will follow you. May you take these splendid qualities with you wherever you go and I wish for each of you a long life full of success and happiness, Sincerely yours, Dwight D. Martin, iPrincipal all 'suv an fa. Looking back into the years, we find our high school career influenced not only by our contemporaries but also by preceding classes and faculties. It bears the trademarks of teachers, past and present, the imprint of students who have frequented these halls and classrooms before us and left their influence for good or bad, and the memories of teachers who introduced certain customs for this or that. In the fall of 1954, a group of seventy-two green Freshmen entered high school determined to add their bit, however small, to the history of Davis-Townsend High School. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. H. L. Waters and Mr. L. M. Venable, we soon outgrew our green ways and entered into the activities and routines of the place which has held such an important spot in our life. Soon nine months had passed and we came back to school in the fall of 1955 as Sophomores. Only fifty-three of our classmates were with us that year, but under the capable guidance of Miss Kathleen Euliss the wheels to success turned on, As our Junior year progressed, we began to feel and work more as a class. We all kept quite busy that year ordering our class rings and preparing a banquet for the departing Seniors. Under a very capable leader, Mrs, C. E. Wike, everything we did that year proved to be a great success. After what seemed to be a very short summer, we returned for the final lap, this Senior year. Under the leadership of Mrs. Herman Ivey, we thirty-nine Seniors have reached the mid point of this lap bearing with us pleasant memories of a successful chapel program, an outstanding P, T,A, program, a prize winner in The Christmas Parade, and with anticipations of a memorable banquet, a successful play, and an impressive graduation, It is with great pride that we take the departing step toward our future with our motto ringing clearly through our mind, 'I'he higher we climb, the broader the view, Class Historian Edith Harris Excitement was in the air, the great magician Blackknight was coming to Lexington. Like everyone else I attended. Everyone watched eagerly as he performed his magic tricks, He then announced that someone from the audience would be chosen to be hypnotised. When he said, the girl seated in the first seat on the second row is the lucky victim, I nearly passed out - and I really did later, Upon my reaching the stage, he asked me where I would like most to go, I thought for a momentg then my classmates came into my mind, I said, I know, I want to visit my classmates. He said, very well, classmates it shall be. As the object he held in front of my eyes began to move, a large farm with a fine herd of cattle drifted in front of me. As we drew nearer to the house, I saw a man standing in the door. It was Boyd Delk. I talked to him for a while, he told me his dairy was one of the largest in the South. While passing by Silver Valley School, I stopped to see if I knew anyone. As I entered the building I was greeted by the principal, who to my surprise, was Steve Gallimore. After a quick look around the school Steve took me to his office and intoduced me to his capable secretary, Edith Harris, She told me she was married and that her daughter was in the first grade. Edith also told me that Libby Varner and her husband had just completed an elaborate home and that Libby ran a nursery, To my astonishment, the city limits of Lexington had extended to Holly Grove. A new building had been erected, on the front was a sign that read 'The Flower Box. I peeped through the window and found the owners to be Sue Foust and Marlene Brooks. At school they were fond of flowers, Across the street was another example of fine architecture occupied by Paige's Beauty Salon whose owner was Paige Mallard. As I approached Lexington, I saw a sign that amazed me - Fritts Motor Co. , Carlton Fritts, owner. I decided to take a look at Davidson County's new court house. Inside I saw 'a shield with these words: Tommy Hedrick, Mayor. That name sounded familiar to me - oh yes, Tommy was one of my classmates. So Iwent in and the receptionist, whom I found to be Clara Leonard asked me to be seated and wait. As I waited we chatted about our school days. She informed me that Judy Davis owned a dress shop, and most of her dresses were originals designed by Nell Kindley. Iudy also had employed Lecola Smith and Louise Manns as floor ladies. At that time Mr. Hedrick came out. During my conversation with him, I learned that Connie Curry was the Home Demonstration Agent for Davidson County and that Benny Kinley was Truant Officer, Benny was such a stern believer in perfect attendance while he was in school. There was a Banquet that night at the Y,W,C.A. honoring the Recreational Director, Alice Hedrick. She said she really liked her job and had been coaching some teams there. Tommy then took us to Thomasville. While there we went to the newspaper office where Peggy Gordon, now Peggy Grubb, is editor of the Thomasville Tribune. Her efficient secretary was Lancy Louie. Visting Peggy was Io Ann Black. She was in Thomasville for the exhibition game of the New York Yankees, of which she is owner. She inquired of my occupation. I told her that the class of '57 had almost taken over St, John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, that I was secretary and Barbara Floyd, Laboratory Technician, which made it seem almost like old times. I revealed to her that Myra R11ssell and Ann May were X-ray technicians there too, Peggy told us that Leroy Grubb was building an airport in Thomasville and that Grubb Airlines was the largest in the United States. As I had never taken an airplane ride, Iwent to see Leroy. He gave me a round trip ticket to Raleigh. When I landed in Raleigh, I discovered that a stock car race would be held that night. I secured a hotel room and dressedg after supper I rented a car and asked directions to the speedway. I was in a hurry and must have exceeded the speed limit, for I heard a siren beckoning me to pull to the side of the road. The patrolman started to write me a ticket when I recognized him as Noel Brinkley. Noel told me he was head of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, and asked where Iwas going in such a hurry. After my telling him about going to the races, he informed me that Lester Clodfelter owned the stadium. As I was returning from the races, I turned the radio on to a news bradcast and heard the Presidential election returns. I was shocked to hear that the new president would be Jerry Hedrick. I thought he had made an excellent class president and had a feeling that he would be successful some day. On my way back to Thomasville, the stewardess, Shirley Barnes, handed me a newspaper, On the back I saw a cartoon drawn by Nancy Jo Thomason. I learned later from Joyce Kinley, another hostess, that Nancy Jo is a cartoonist for the Winston Salem Journal. I turned to the first page and there in large letters was the following: Mrs. Mona Gail Moore crowned Mrs. America. Mona Gail was one of the prettiest girls in our class. After turning a few pages, I saw a movie advertisement - WINTER WONDERLAND, starring the academy- award-winner Sherree Jones, the former Shirley Hedrick. The producer was the great Judy Kepley, After the plane landed, I then journeyed to Salisbury. As I neared the city limits, I felt faint from the airplane ride. I asked a passer-by if she knew a good doctor. To my amazement the passer-by was Peggy Ward, who suggested I go see the doctor on Forty-Second Street, Peggy told me that she was teach- ing the third grade now and that Lucy Beck was a Librarian at the Library of Congress. After leaving her I went to see the doctor, who turned out to be Jerry Gallimore. I was happy to see that Judith Kinley was her nurse as I remembered her high school desire to be a nurse some day. The doctor gave me a pill and as I swallowed it I blacked out. I came to my senses when I heard the snapping of fingersg I looked up and there was the magician laughing at me. When asked how I felt, I explained, This is one of the most exciting experiences I have ever had. Malinda Perkins Alice Hedrick 0601!
