We leave our thanks and appreciation to each and all of you. Now our school days are at an end: Graduation is here at last. As we leave the school we leave each friend, Because our school days together have now passed. Our school days are just memories dear To remember each coming and passing year. As we go higher up the ladder of fame We will see good ole 'D. T, in our dreams again. We now leave, no more to return to all our studies, exams and fun. Sometimes we failed to follow the golden rule, But still, we leave our thanks for putting up with us in school. We, the class of '55, now leave, Still hoping and wanting to believe that all our friends Will graduate someday and say that school will always pay. At last the big day had arrived in the year of 1951. Here we were fifty-eight stu- dents beginning our first year of high school. We had as our teachers, Mrs. Spurgeon Ayers and Mr. J. E. Lippard, who led us through our first year, We selected as our officers, Carol Whitlock, President, Shirley Smith, Vice President, Virginia Jarrell, Secretary, and Ann Crotts, Treasurer. During this year we had many activities such as entering a float in the Christmas parade and being waiters and waitresses at the Junior- Senior Banquet. We only lost two students this year. In 1952 we were back as Sophomores with fifty-eight on roll. With us as our homeroom teacher was Mrs. H.W. Marsh. Our class officers were President, Richard Younts, Vice President, Peggy Briggs, Secretary, Pat Roberts, and Treasurer, Donald Hunt, This year some of the students were honored to be selected as Beta Members. Other highlights were winning second prize for a float entered in the Christmas parade and a class trip to Carolina Beach. This year we lost eight students. Next, our Junior Year! This was the year we had waited for, This year with fifty students promised to be a full one. One of the most awaited events was the receiving of our class rings. What a time we had making money and planning our Junior-Senior Banquet. Another big event was the presentation of our Junior Class play. With such capable officers as Gene Foust, President, Add Dorsett, Treasurer, the year proved a success. Four girls were chosen as Junior Marshals. They were Shirley Smith, Chief, Mary Smith, Peggy Briggs and Rebecca Snider. We lost three students this year. Finally, we forty-four students have reached our goal. We are SENIORS! We have as our homeroom teacher, Mr. Spencer Qualls. This year has been packed full of activities, parties, publishing a school annual, giving a Halloween and Senior play, the Junior-Senior Banquet and a wonderful trip to Washington. Now it is finished and we are looking forward to what life may hold for us. Shirley Smith, Historian fx I of l N f ,g V K1 ' . 4 n at XX I f ff: . In our senior year we decided to have a class reunion at Davis-Townsend after ten years, to find out where everyone was and what they were doing. When the year 1965 finally arrived, I was very excited and I hurried to catch a plane from New York, where I am a reporter for The New York Times. As I boarded the plane I immediately recognized two of my classmates, Shirley Smith and Buddy Beck. Shirley is a model now and has been on all of the magazine covers. The entire nation is familiar with Buddy Beck, the famous cartoonist. We had a short stop at Washington, D. C. and who should board the plane but Mary Smith and Richard Younts! Mary was voted most likely to succeed in our class and it sure looks as if she has. She is secretary to the President of the United States. Richard also has a government position, none other than Secretary of Agriculture. We landed at the Winston-Salem Airport and the minute we hit solid ground my eye was caught by four beautiful homes in the distance. After inquiring we discovered Kay Story lives in one of the houses. We invited her to go with us. We learned from Kay that the other homes belong to three other classmates, Evelyn Mann, Doris Hed- rick, and Virginia Dorsett. They all have families and are very happy. On our way to Lexington we tuned our radio to the Lexington station. Whose voice should we hear but Adrian Delk's! He played some records by the latest popular singer, Sonny Grubb. When we arrived at D. T. , I thought we were the first to arrive. But I saw a big shiny car and out stepped Ann Crotts, a star on a television serial, I remarked about her dress and she said Lorraine Garner designed it. Lorraine always wore beautiful clothes. Up drove a car and three attractive women got out. To my surprise it was Noretta Hedrick, Janette Louya, and Betty Jane Summey. All are nurses in Winston City Hospital. The patients there sure are lucky. Another car came spinning into the drive. It was Donald Hedrick. He informed us us that he was in the used car business. He must be doing very well, for he is having a large house built by H. R. Hedrick. It seems H. R. is in the contracting business. Loretta Kepley arrived next, looking very pretty with her stunning new hair style. Loretta owns a beauty shop, but Carol Whitlock, now a famous hair stylist, always styles her hair. Bobby Leonard arrived soon looking very dignified. He explained that he is a lawyer in Florida and that Gertrude Barnes is his Very capable secretary. Peggy Briggs, now Mrs. Lowell Varner, and her husband were next to arrive. I f sa' 1, ,a'4' gx They have a cute little girl in the first grade and Lowell told me her teacher is Corne- lia Hedrick. I know Cornelia makes a fine teacher. Oh, by the way, Lowell told me he is now in the dry-cleaning business. Virginia Jarrell came flying in with Tommy's car. It seems they are still going to gether, and Virginia is a receptionist there. Laura Beck and Lois Burkhart arrived together. When Lois flew in from Hollywood, where she stars in motion pictures, she was met by Laura, who is librarian of the Lex- ington Library, Lois told us that she just made a picture with Bruce May, an outstand- ing young actor. Gene Foust drove up in a sleek automobile. He is now County Farm Agent, and assists Donald Hunt with his large farm. Someone said there was money in the ground if anyone had sense enough to dig it up. Vann Watkins arrived in a truck. He is a truck driver now. He didn't have much trouble driving their car back in fifty-four. He said he always gets his car serviced at Swing's Service Station, where Roy Swing is the proprietor. Then who should come bouncing in but Betty Curry. I was surprised to hear that she coaches basketball at Davis-Townsend. I hear they have a winning team, Delmer Green swung the curve next with his Ford. I asked Delmer what he was doing, but I should have known. He is foreman in a mothball factory. He has turned against the smell of mothballs but there is a florist shop right next door, run by Patsy Crotts, and she keeps him supplied with sweet smelling flowers. Next arrived two artists, Rebecca Snider and Donnie Tysinger. Rebecca is a musician and Donnie a portrait painter, Both are very successful, Donald Russell came walking up the drive. He is an electrical engineer in Tennessee and has been visiting his parents. He always was interested in television. Peggy Kindley arrived from Silver Valley, where she keeps house for her lovely family. Maxine Leonard came with a pencil behind her ear, She is the hard working sec- retary at Belk-Martin Company. Hazel Younts finally appeared. She was not thrilled about the meeting place be- cause she teaches the first grade at D. T. and is never tardy. We had a wonderful reunion and we all hope to do as well in the next ten years as we have done in the past. Beth McCulloch Class Prophet I 2 1 . This we're telling to you. There'll be a memory within our hearts Of years that have gone by. God was our leader and helper and friend. He'll help us, guide us and walk beside us. Give us His hand when we've lost our way, Give us His shoulder to cry on. Whether the day is bright or grey We'll pray to Him and we'll go on. So as we leave Davis-Townsend High We want to say farewell And we'll ne'er forget you so may God bless you. This we've told now to you.
