VOLUME X Editor ..... . . Shirley Sink Assistant Editor . . Eva Rae Swing Wrcward This is a drama of our year at Davis-Townsend, What have we accomplished this year? Only you can answer this question because only you know how well you have taken advantage of the education offered, Only you know whether you have developed a better sense of friendship and sportsmanship than you had a year ago, You'l1 never know what you have lost by not taking advantage of every opportunity offered you all through high school until you are a senior and almost ready to say good- bye to that wonderful part of life know as School Days . We, the Senior Class, hope this book brings back memories of work, fun, and the valuable friendships you had a Davis-Townsend in 1953-1954. Dedication In Zh: Spa! fight We wish to dedicate this issue of the Daviston to our parents, knowing well it is not nearly thanks enough for their support. Many of us wouldn't be here if it weren't for them, because in everything we have undertaken to do, they have always been our in- spiration. Books just wouldn't hold the thanks we owe to them or the love we have for them, Not onlyhave they beenour guides but have had enough faith in us to give us confidence in ourselves, Parents, here's our tribute to you ......,,, THE 1954 DAVISTON Adminislra tion in gb .1 W R f',:fa-lv ' 'f .,.......a-K '55- MR, D, D, MARTIN Principal fflcmculary Zzculty Mrs.Mar1:in, Mrs. Farris, Mrs, Cashion, Mrs, Arnold, Mrs. Coulter, Mr. Gunter, Mrs, Tate, Sec ond row: Mr. Martin, Mrs. Ingalls, Mrs, Webster, Miss Chadwick, Mrs. Allred, Mrs. Roof, Mr.Davey, Miss Davis, Not shown: Mr. Jones and Mrs, Lohr. Of course, this seems ridiculous, but on a little trip out West we find our- selves in a city with a few old buildings. Upon entering one of these buildings we decide it must be an old discarded laboratory. The room is filled with enormous machinery. One of the boys, without warning us, sits down at the controls of a machine and touches a lever. A great rumbling is heard and the surprised boy at the controls begins telling what he sees. Oh! what a wonderful scene. We see an artist busy at work. Why! It is Jewell Miller painting a picture of someone.A girl is sitting posed over in the corner and it's Clara Hughes. She must be famous having Jewell paint her picture, The surprised boy keeps mumbling as beautiful scenes pass. Yes, this makes a pleasant home at- mosphere. Here are three pretty homes out in the country with several little children running and playing. Wait a minute. Isee three women talking over the fence, and they are none other than Jo Freeman, Maxine Tysinger, and Peggy Beck. What a wonderful place to live with such friendly neighbors. A car drives up at Jo 's home and she rushes over to find that it is Rachel May with her friend Lowell, They are still dadng, and Rachel looks so different because she has long hair. She is traveling for her health. Boys, come and look, shouts the boy at the controls, that boy can really play basketball. He's moving closer, and isn't that a beautiful shot. Well, what do you know! It is Bruce Beck. Here's a class room and what an attractive teacher! It's Nancy Jollay. Aren't the children quiet? Here's Rebecca Rhodes and Marie Hedrick busy at work. Rebecca seems to be looking at a ring on Marie's left hand. Rebecca doesn't seem as quiet as usual, just look at her talk to that boy over at the desk. Shirley Sink has just arrived on the scene. She tells Marie that her husband is in business on his own, making plenty of money. She says they have a beautiful home and another new Oldsmobile. There goes an ambulance, exclaims the boy, and Aldean Conrad is the driver. His delight was driving fast. A nurse whom I recognize as Willie Hedrick comes to take a look at her new patient. The patient is Pauletta Smith and she has a broken leg, She explains that she fell while skating. She was always such an energetic person. She is a cheerleader at one of the leading Colleges, Just look at the attractive doctor approaching. Why, it's Lohr Younts. That scene passes on and we see a sign which reads: St. Louis, Missouri. A girl gels off a bus and we see that it is Barbara Hughes. She has a job there typing and is staying with her sister. Lflass Prophecy What have we here? It's Jack Clodfelter, a magician, performing a stunt in a large auditorium. Can you imagine? The machine flashes to an army base and we see Claudette Deaton entertaining friends. Her husband is now a general, Boy, what rank! She leads an easy life. Mon tlieu Alford is seen walking down the street in C alifornia. She is talking to Billie Moore. Montlieu is living in California just taking it easy, Billy explains that she is working downtown and her husband is stationed in California. Wouldn't I like to own that car from which a dashing gentleman steps. We find that it is Don Hedrick. He stops to tip his hat to Eva Rae Swing and asks if she desires a job in Belks. Since finishing college, he is the manager there.Eva informs him that she already has a job and plans to enter college again because it is so much fun. She always was an amusing girl. Now a rumbling is heard and we find ourselves down near Trinity. There is Larry Thomas in the yard W21ShiI1g his new Ford. What do you know! He still isn't married, He has a little business of his own doing mechanic work. Billy Hedrick is doing a little farming. He is deer hunting most of the time.He has traded cars about once every month, but can't seem to find a good one. In Asheboro we see Julia Hicks and Mary Hunt busy at work. Mary is keeping Julia up on news about all the new boys she has recently met. More people at work are Joyce Kennedy and Janell Crotts who have convenient jobs inThomasville. They always had such a good time together in school.Joyce got married right after she finished school and Janell is still looking for a Cadillac. Well, who is that boy walking down the street with three girls. It's Joe Nifong. He always did like the girls. He has a job working at night, but says he can always take the girls out for ltmch. We see Rollen Snider as a carpenter. Boy, can he drive nails. He takes trips to Florida to visit some of his old friends very often, and there is Paul Metters whom Rollen has just met in Florida. Paul says he is just having a good time. There are two girls who are talking to Paul. Here is Pat Snider taking dictation from a young man. She works as his private secretary. And here is the last scene. It is Jimmy Elberson on a big farm in the mountains.I also see a Cadillac sitting in the yard. Boy, he must be getting rich. M. Snapp as our homeroom teachers. We were excited and very green about changing classes and having lots of different teachers. This year sixteen boys and girls from our room were chosen to be waiters and waitresses at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Class Officers in the boys' room were Jack Clodfelter, president, Bruce Beck, vice-president, in the girls' room, Jo Beck, president, Pat Snider, vice-president. The term was soon over and we were looking forward to our Sophomore year. Again school opened and we Sophomores learned that six classmates had dropped out during vaca1ion, which left only forty-six of us. Our homeroom teacher was Mr. A. M. SnaIJP. Class officers were Shirley Conrad, president, Jo Beck, vice-president: Pat Snider, secretary, and Donald Moore, treasurer. This year several of us were admitted to the Beta Club, We were able to prove our talent as reporters for The Chatter. Several parties at the lake were enjoyed, also. As the spring arrived we were eagerly awaiting our Junior year. The doors opened again in '52 with Miss Marie Bondurant as our homeroom teacher, We thirty- eight Juniors were so excited over giving the Junior-Senior Banquet that we didn't mind the hard work that went into the chicken pie supper, selling candy and magazines and the Junior Play Mama's Baby Boy. We had several parties this year including one at Mirror Lake, During the year we gained another classmate, Billie Moore, Class officers our Junior year were president, Shirley Conrad, vice-president, Don Hedrickg secretary, Pat Snider, and treasurer, Eva Rae Swing. Junior Marshalls were Shirley Conrad, chiefg Montlieu Elberson, Jo Beck Freeman, and Joyce Kennedy, Again the school year ended with a proud and happy class ready to become dignified Seniors, Seniors at last! Thirty-four of us realizing as we sat in the Senior's place in chapel that our last year had come too soon. We learned that Mrs. C, E. Wike was our Senior teacher and advisor, This year seemed to be filled with activities, the Halloween play, float in the Christmas parade, supper, parties, Senior play and the annual. Senior class officers were Lohr Younts, president, Don Hedrick, vice-president, Pat Snider, secretaryg Eva Rae Swing, treasurer. When we receive our diplomas we real- ize that it is doubtful whether we will ever be together again. But whatever happens, all the Seniors are looking forward to the future with our motto upon our lips-- Success comes only to those who strive for it, ' Jo Freeman I ack Clodfelter Haby Pictures A., r ,ji ,J as fy i t .
