And our sad hearts cry As we say good-by Now our school days past we'll not forget the tears, And the happy times we'Il always hold so dear. D.T. H. S. in our dreams again we'll see Visions of what used to be. Thanking all our te-achers for the help they've been How they all have worked to help us seek to win. And we'll reach to gain Truth and right our fame. Parting now the sorrow that we all must face Only by the help of the Etemal Grace May God our guide hold us steadfast to the end For the task which will begin. Alma-mater, we will love and cherish you Forever in our hearts, And classmates we will'ne'er forget Though now we have to part. Study, tests, exams are over, Graduation is here at last, And the joy of achievement ls tinged with sadness for the past. As we embark. on the threshold Of a hew and different life, May the ideals of D.T. sustain us, Through the coming storm and strife. Love, thanks and appreciation, To our teachers we extend, For your inspiration, help and patience, And a willing hand to lend. Fame and opportunity beckon To the class of '53. Let us boldly meet the challenge, Conquer our goal successfully. When a decade or more has passed, And we pause to read the names, May we recognize our classmates In the blazing halls of fame. Celeste Anderson Lorene Rhodes CLASS HISTORY We, the class of i953, will soon reach our destination. Graduation is the goal we have work- ed and waited for, for four years. As the time draws nearer we feel the need to record our class history, so that the memories we cherish most dear will live forever. ln the fall of 1949, fifty-six awkward but eager boys and girls assembled in the Freshmen room to begin their iourney through high school. Since there were so many of us, the class was divid- ed into two groups. Mrs'. Byrd and Mr. Snapp were the homeroom teachers. Class officers in Mrs. Byrd's room were: president, Wilbur Beck, vice-president, Lorene Rhodes, secretary, Beckie Nance, and treasurer, Virginia Miller. ln Mr. Snapp's room, class officers were: president, Tommy Stanford, vice-president, Hazel Lanier, and sec reta ry, Judy Beck. That year we lost fourteen membersof the class. Those leaving were: Frank Arnold, Lena Church, Richard Freeman, Tommy Louya, Jimmy Broom, Joe Crotts, Ralph Hedrick, Nancy Coe, Dorothy Kinley, Lillian Poole, Jacqualine Tucker, Inez Skeen, Lucille Sims, and Betty Yow. Our Sophomore year began under the capable leadership of Mr. J. S. Amick. One of the first things we did was to elect class officers. They were: president, Wilbur Beck, secretary, Audrey Hedrick, treasurer, Virginia Miller, and historian, Beckey Beck. Although we gained two stu- dents, Rufus Embry and Charles Stamn, we lost twelve others. These included Audrey Hedrick, Polly Myers, Mary Lookabill, Tommy Stanford, Jimmy Younts, Ralph Everhart, Parmalee Hill, Joe Burkhart, Odell Hedrick, Beckie Nance, and Hazel Lanier. We also gained and lost Besty Saunders. ln May, the Sophomore class was grieved by the death of its beloved teacher, Mr. Jesse S. Amick. At last, we were high and mighty Juniors. Our class was led by a very patient and competent advisor, Miss Marie Bondurant, and class officers who were: president, Wilbur Beck, vice-presi- dent, Virginia Miller, secretary, Thelma Jean Manns, and treasurer, Jimmy Varner. Our many activities included aclass party at City Lake, giving the Junior play entitled Call Me Darling', giving and attending the Junior-Senior banquet, giving a skating party, entering a float in the Christmas parade and attending a retum party given to us by the Seniors at Mirror Lake. We had lots of fun selling Stanley products, candy, magazines, and other things to make money to give the banquet. Thelma Jean Manns, Ann Beck, Roger Black, Mary Lou Lambeth, Paul Byerly, Beckie Beck Weisner, and Richard Hicks dropped out of school this year. The summer passed swiftly and we retumed for the last step of our ioumey. Officers elected for this year were: president, Wilbur Beck, vice-president, Carol Hedrick, secretary, Virginia Miller, and treasurer, Jimmy Vamer. Under the leadership of our sponsors, Miss Marie Bondurant and Mr. Dwight Martin, we began an active year. Some of the highlights of the yearwere: publishing an annual, going to the State Fair, entering a prize winning float in the Christmas parade, electing mascots who are Butchie White and Bonnie Foust, giving a chicken pie supper, giving a Halloween play entitled Ghost For Rent , giving a senior play, attending the banquet, going on the Senior trip, and prepar- ing graduation exercises. Typing classes were offered to the Seniors for the first time. Now the time has come to close our class history. lt is with mingled feelings of sorrow and pride that we leave, sorrow in departing, pride in our achievements. Let us hope that we will always climb the ladder of success, keeping in mind our class motto, Today we follow, tomor- row we lead. Barbara Glover, Historian SENIOR SUPERLATIVES 1. I, Myra McCulloch, have reached my goal. Since Betty Crocker retired, I have taken her place. I started on my summer vacation two weeks ago. I first went to N.Y. Deciding to relax for a while I bought a newspaper and retired to my room. When I opened my paper, I had the surprise of my life, Bruce Burkhart - the editor. Bruce always did know a lot of news. As I looked at the headlines I ran across a familiar name. The headlines read New Scientific Research Bureau opened by John Lee Brinkley. As I read the article I realized he had been one of my classmates at Davis-Townsend. John's doing real well for himself. When I finished reading, I turned on the T-V set. Who should appear but Katherine Hughesl She is now a top comedian in N. Y. Kat had a lot experience in high school. The next program was a musical and guess who the star was. Peggy Janel Peggy is married now and is well known as a law- yer's wife and T-V star. Someone said she married into a family of Klass. Getting tired of N.Y. and having an invitation to dine with the governor of N.C. , I traveled to Raleigh. After dinner I happened to glance at the newspaper and noticed that Beck's Transfer had sold out to another company. As I continued to read I realized that it was Bill Beck from Lexington. I wondered if Nancy Beck was his wife and sure enough, it said that his tal- ented wife was opening a dance school in Raleigh. I guess Nancy is pleased for she always did say she would like to live in Raleigh and always did hate truckers. With this I decided to visit my home town of Lexington and see if I could find out about more of my classmates. When I en- tered Lexington, I noticed a large market. On the top was a sign Leonard's Little Farm Market. I stopped for some fruit and who should come to wait on me but Judy Beck. Judy said she had married Curtis Leonard. They were now planning a vacation to all of the romantic spots including Johnson Island. After leaving, I tumed on the radio of my car. They were just making a station break. I was almost floored when the an- nouncer was Wilbur Beck. He really makes a good announcer. The next program on the radio was several commercials. The first announcement was of stock car races at Vamer's Stadium. Varner--that name was very familiar. To be sure, Jimmy Varner from Silver Valley. It seems to be a good business for some- one as interested in cars as Jimmy. The next ad was Hines and LoppBurberGr1d Beauty 5GI00 IOCGTBCI in Holly Grove.I found out that Jimmy Hines and Daisy Lopp had opened shops in the same building and are doing big business. The program then changed. Next was the Farm and Home program. Presiding was the County Farm Agent, Rufus Embry. Who would have guessed it, but Rufus said he wasn't going to work in a mill. ' The mayor of Lexington had chosen the best Home Maker of Holly Grove and guess who it is. You might know, Virginia Miller Everhart, but of course she had a head start over the others. The Farm and Home program had also sponsored a flower contest. The winner was Mrs. Jimmy Varner, or to us Carol. Hedrick . The announcer also stated that she was opening a flower shop near Silver Valley. With this, the program signed off the air. As Wilbur called his secretary to bring him .1 record I noticed that he called her Anita. I listened closely and I recognized her voice. It was Anita Swing. She always did think a lot of Wilbur and now is his secretary. As Ientered the shopping district of Lexington I noticed a large poster on a bill board. The State Bank of Lexington was spon- soring a spring dance. There were the faces of two very attractive girls on the poster. As I drew near, I could make out the faces very clearly-Lorene Rhodes and Phylis Hedrick. The sign said that they were to be the dance leaders at the dance, along with their husbands to be, who were employed at the bank along with the girls. These two girls have stuck together and are really making a go of it. I stopped in town and went into the dime store for some candy. I immediately recognized Nancy Hedrick. I spoke to her and asked what she was doing. To my surprise she is the floor lady and manager of the store. Nancy also told me she is ex- pecting to be able to buy a store of her own before long. As Iwas coming out of the store I ran into Barbara Glover. Guess what, she has music schools in Lexington and Thomasville. Barbara always was a good pianist. She's also getting married in July. As I ventured down the street, I noticed a crowd gathered in front of a store. Like everyone else I stopped to see what was happening. A lady had fallen and broken her leg.A nurse was standing by her. When the nurse looked up, I had to look at her twice. Doris Ward, of all people! I talked to Doris about her work and also asked about other classmates of ours. Joyce Manns is living in Silver Valley and is typist and office lady at Silver Valley School. She and her husband are very happy there. Thelma Louya isalso living in Denton. Sheisahouse wife and mother of twin boys. I know the twins have a fine mother. It was about time for me to leave. I began wondering about Buford Beck. I inquired at the police station. They said, Why sure, Buford's around. I soon learn that he owns half of Lexington and is still an old bachelor. I started thinking about all my classmates and found that I had placed all of them but one. Where was Celeste Anderson? Time was short and I had to be leaving. I was sorry that I hadn't heard from Celeste, but as I was retuming to Raleigh I noticed a large expensive looking house. In the yard was a young woman, and as I approached I noticed that it was Celeste. I stopped for a minute and she told me she had married a well-to-do man and was his private secretary. I remember her saying once be- fore that she wasn't going to let a private secretary sit on her husband's knee and I guess this is one solution. On I traveled, back to work and thinking of my happy vacation. This is one memory time can't erase, My school days of '53 and my classmates of D-T.
