Graduation-this year for the first time it really means something to us, something more than simply the departure of an older and respected group of students. This time it is we who must soon really face life for the first time, and we must admit that the prospects are a little frightening. Looking back for a moment before turning forward, we wonder that there should be such a small number remaining of the class which in 19-1-8 entered high school with 55 enrollment. VVe wonder, and feel a little proud that we are of that remaining number. The advisors who saw us as freshmen lose eighteen members of our group were Miss Helen Sink and Mr. Al- fred Snapp. Classmates leaving us were Haroldeen Alred, James Flowe, Bobby Ray Hedrick, Jimmy Younts, Carolyn Embler, Elsie Harrison, Lillian Poole, Peggy Younts, Richard Free- man, Richard Hicks, Hollis Hughes, Henry Lee Lambeth, Virginia Brinkley, Nancy Coe, Merle Hunt, Polly Phillips, Joyce Stanford, and Velma Stanford. In August of '49 we returned to school under the competent leadership of the late Mr. J. S. Amick and our class ofhcers: president, .Vlyra Amick, vice-president, Lowell Roof, secre- tary, Martha Sinkg and treasurer, Tula Faye Clodfelter. That year we lost Frank Arnold, Joe Burkhart, Gladys Dorsett, Tommy Hunt, Evelyn Johnson, Geraldine Kindley, and Peggy Smith. YVe also lost Tula Faye Clodfelter and Carroll Beck to each other. Our junior year was filled with activities guided by a very patient homeroom teacher, Miss Marie Bondurant, and class officers who were: president, Johnny Jones, vice-president, Lowell Roofg secretary, Minnie Hedrickg and treasurer, Zelma Watkins. Among other things that happened were the thrill of getting our class rings, giving the junior play Q Here' Comes Charlienj, entrance of a prize-winning float in the Christmas parade, and the presentation of a banquet in honor of the seniors. Our honor students were Hilda and Evelyn Hedrick, marshals, with Martha Sink and Myra Amick as chief marshals. 1950 also marked one of the greatest sorrows of our high school career, in the death of our beloved former teacher, Mr. J. S. Amick. We considered ourselves lucky to lose only four students: Johnny Jones, Bobby Gene Hedrick, Harold Hughes, and Ruth Elene Pierce. Upon returning to school to write finis to our high school education, however, we found that Myra Amick had deserted us in preference to Bobby Gene Hedrick. They are Mr. and Mrs. Hedrick now. Earl Weisner joined us from Lexington High. Being seniors brought with it the responsibility of publishing an annual, giving two plays, graduation exercises, and dreaming up methods of raising money. Even more fun was our trip to the State Fair, senior trip, and a chance to display our savoir faire at a banquet given to us by the juniors. We have come through this year under the expert guidance of Mrs. Herbert Sisk and our class officers: president. Lowell Roof, vice-president, John Conradg secretary, Anna Lynn Briggs, and treasurer, Zelma Vvatkins. As we make ready to bid our final good-byes to D. T., I should like to close the history of the Senior Class of 1952 with this thought from Henry VVadsworth Longfellow's Psalm of Life : Lives of great men all remind us lVe can make our lives sublime, And departing leave behind us Footprints on the sands 0 time. if 4 MARGARET CROUSE Historian ' .Lai 'IMI an Zafamenf We, the Senior Class of 1952, realizing our approaching graduation, and the end of our existance at D. Rentz, and the entire faculty, we leave our thanks and appreciation for their help in making our school career the success it has been. 2. ' So this being our Last Will and Testament, we hereby leave our school, faculty and classmates our deepest love and gratitude for the happiness we have known within the walls of D. T. High School. THE SENIOR CLASS EVEL-YN HEDRICK Testator 66444 nop ec? Look into the globe , the gypsy was telling me. I would like to have an insight as to what my classmates will be doing ten years from now,', I said. That has always been one of my life desires, to see the future before it gets here. Then it will be fulfilled,', she said to me, Concentrate on your classmates. Look, they are beginning to appear. You will go with me on a tour of the world. As we boarded the plane I noticed the pilot, none other than Bobby Everhart, and be- side him as she always was at school, Gin. I called the hostess who was standing with her back to us. As she turned around I saw to my surprise that she was Farrist Ann Barnes. If anything happened to the plane she would probably be a good hand to have around. She drove a bus back in high school and should know a little about mechanics. We found a seat and as we sat there someone called to me. I turned around and there were Kat and Buddy, now man and wife. We began talking and Kat told me they were celebrating their ninth anniversary. They certainly looked happy. Of course they always were. On we flew, getting higher all the time. I began getting dizzy. I got up to get some water and when I did, I fainted. They called the plane nurse and as I opened my eyes there was Ola Mae Arnold. At a time like this she certainly came in handy. ' Finally we landed. Here we were in California. Our first stop was at the Mocambo in Hollywood. As we walked in I saw a petite girl rise and ascend the steps to the platform and begin singing one of the latest hit tunes. I immediately recognized the voice of Zelma Watkins. As we sat there, in walked an exclusively dressed man and with him a gorgeous blond. He resembled someone I used to know, but who? Finally it dawned on me, Why thatis Lowell Hedrick. Boy, the little black mustache really looked snazzy! As they walked to their table, everyone spoke to him. He really must have struck a gold mine I He's a lawyer, the gypsy informed me, And as you can see, very well known. We left the Mocambo, deciding to walk around town awhile. As the guide took us through the park and we neared the benches, I saw a familiar Hgure lounging on one of them. Without doubt it was Ed Conrad, loafing, as he always did when we were going to school. As we went on downtown there was a paper boy on the street selling papers. I bought one and we sat down to rest. As I was looking over the sports page, I noticed that Lowell Roof was the editor. VVell, good for him. He always liked sports and made several good speeches in English concerning sports and sportsmanship. As we went on down the street I decided to get my hair fixed before leaving for Pasa- dena, California. As we entered the beauty shop, I found the secretary to be Christine Parrish. She sent us on in and to my surprise, Minnie Hedrick was the beautician who greeted us. The next day we left Hollywood and went to Pasadena. When we arrived we immedi- ately started to find something cold to drink. VVe entered a large building that bore a sign, Beck's Snack Shop. We later learned that the proprietor of the shop was Bill Beck. I knew Bill always liked to eat but I never dreamed he would open up a place of his own. As we came out, who should we meet but Tommy Swing. He was the same ole guy he had always been, always something corney to say. He was now a civil engineer, living in Houston, Texas. He said the Texas Belles were really beauties but one still hadn't captured his heart. We went back in Bill's place and called a cab. When the cab arrived I saw another one of my classmates. in fact the one who drove 76 , the school bus I rode my last year, John Conrad. He told us he had a pretty good start on that ball-team-he was gonna' raise four boys. He showed us many interesting places. About two miles out of town, we came to the homes of the big business men of Pasadena. One especially caught my eye, it was a huge thing cf... fa.. .., CCon'rinuedl with flowers of all kinds planted around it. It was certainly a dream house. I asked John to whom it belonged. Remember Martha Sink ? he asked. Of course I remembered her and also all her plans and dreams of some day having a ten room house, a yacht, freezer locker, cadillac, television, and of course a man ! Well, she certainly had done all right for herselfl As we drove back to town, there in the forks of the road sat a patrol car. John blew the horn and threw up his hand. At once I recognized the patrolman, J. D. Younts, who was sit- ting there waiting for someone to do something wrong. About a mile from town, was the Pasadena Hospital. It was a beautiful place. I asked John if we might drive over there. He said, Sure, and turned. As we entered the hospital, the head nurse, Margaret Crouse, came over to us. She took us through the building. Other nurses I noticed were Betty Loop and Mildred Huges, always seemed to me that they would make good nurses. We drove on back into town after which we paid the driver and went to our room to pack before leaving the next morning. This had certainly been a wonderful trip! We got on the bus leaving for home. As we came on down through California, I noticed a huge foctory. One of your classmates is connected with that factory, the gypsy told me. Hilda Hedrick. Her husband owns it and she works as his private secretary. Well, that was a good idea! We should be nearing home, I thought. I looked out the window, Tyro, we were almost home. My, what a large peach orchard just ahead! Red's Orchard. Why, that must belong to Frank Metters! Yes, of course, because right about a hip, skip, and jump from it was where Judy Jackson lived. I always knew Red would get out in the Tyro section some way. Lexington at last, back where we had started. We pulled in at the bus station, got off the bus, and hailed a cab. And now for the last few of your classmates. The ones who are still here in Lexington. said the gypsy. We came out toward Holly Grove. Why, Mt. Tabor's new church, it was even more beautiful than I had pictured it to be, and the parsonage, someone was living in it. Oh, please could I go in for a minute? I asked. Of course, so we stopped. I rang the doorbell. As the door opened- Venus, what are you doing here! Why, you must be the new pastor's wife! Yes, we've been here two years. VVell good for you, and so close home too. After talking awhile, we left. Coming on up the road I noticed a sign on the store which had been owned by John Beck. Hedrick's Grocery . It immediately occured to me. Jug must have taken over the business. We came on out to the school house. This place certainly hadn't changed except that the classrooms and the gym were finished. As we approached the oflice, I could hear someone typing away. I looked in and there with her own desk, was Squeak or rather to anyone who doesn't know her by her nickname, Evelyn Hedrick. She took us down to the third grade room. Their reading class was just beginning. The teacher was Anna Lynn Briggs. She had said that she was going to be an old maid school teacher, but that huge diamond which she was wearing didn't look too convincing to me. Our tour was almost over. Oh yes, how about Earl Weisner? There probably wouldn't be anyone at home right now, the gypsy told me, but he and Becky have a beautiful new home and-well, Earl is probably at work if he isn't too busy passing out cigars. As the images faded away, I looked breathlessluy at the gypsy- It's hard to believe! But, what about me? You, she said, I'm sure you'll be happy as a general's wife! As for being certain all these things will really take place, I can't say. I can only give you an idea of what might be. This old world is a funny place, one never knows what will happen next. You seem to have a swell group of classmates and I can only say, I wish for all of you, the best that life can offer.
