' Closs l-listory As the time of graduation comes nearer we feel the need to record some of the memories we cherish most dear, that our history might live on after our life at Davis-Townsend High School is completed. In the fall of 1946, Fifty-six eager Freshmen assembled on the campus to begin a four-year journey through Davis-Townsend High School with Graduation as our destination. Since there were s-o many of us, it was necessary to have two sections, but we were combined under the leadership of our class officers: President, Loretta Beck, Vice-President, Alda Jean Dorsett, Secretary, Lucille Rose, Treasurer, 'Ward Loftin. Our advisors were Mrs. Suzie Cieszko and Mr. Gorman Michael. That year was marked by our First grown-up parties. Six girls and six boys were chosen for Waiters and waitresses at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Members of our class leaving us that year were Nancy Myers, Evelyn Gordon, Willie Kinley, Gladys Floyd, Ward Loftin, Carl Burkhart, and George Burkhart. After a trying year We were advanced one step nearer our destination by being made Sophomores. We gained Peggy Tuttle, Mickey Dorsett, James Alred, and Bill Wright. Under the capable leadership of Miss Polly Dabbs and our class officers who Were: President, Austin Rose, Vice-President, Wade Younts, Secre- tary, Bill Wright, Treasurer, Earnestine Burkhart, our Sophomore year soon passed with thirteen members leaving us. They were: John Robert Curry, Mickey Dorsett, Perline Watkins, Carl Conrad, Flo Grant, Billie Jean Coe, Audrey Hedrick, Clayton Hedrick, Donald Mize, Lewis Kyles, Clyde Hedrick, James Alred, and David Du Biel. Having finished the half-way mark of our journey. we began our third year as Juniors. Some of the outstanding events of the year were getting our class rings, giving the Junior-Senior Banquet, and presenting the Junior Class Play entitled The Antics of Andrew. Cui' advisors that year were Mrs. Austin Frye and Miss Jane Bird. We gained Bobby Amick and Margie Frank while we lost four of our classmates who were: Austin Rose. Bay Everhart, Bill Wright, and Jacqueline Gordon. The predominant were: President, Loretta Beck, Vice-President, Bobby Amick, Secretary, La Verne Beck, and Treasurer, Charles Hedrick. The summer vacation passed quickly and we set forth on the last few miles of our journey. All of our classmates returned but Lucille Rose and we found we had two new travelers, Pansy Avery and Jean Holston. Under the leadership of our advisor, Miss Lorie Campbell, and our class officers: President, Druid Crotts, Vice-President, Margie Frank, Secretary, Sadie Beck, and Treasurer, Doris Rose Young, we began an active year. Activities included publishing the school annual, presenting the Senior Class Play, attending the Junior-Senior Banquet, electing our mascots who are Carolyn Frank and Danny Leonard, and preparing graduation exercises. And now, we have reached our destination, but we will start a new and very different journey, the one for which we have been preparing ourselves for the past four years. We have bought our tickets and stand at the crossroads ready to start down '6Life's Highway, this time not as a class, but as individuals. LA VERNE BECK, Historian 2 5908 00585303 6 Loist Will We, the Senior Class of Davis-Townsend High School, the year of 1950, being of sound mind and body and realizing the importance of our coming graduation, do hereby declare this to be our Last Will and Testament. 1. So this being our Last Will and Testament, we do hereby leave our school, faculty, and classmates our deepest love and gratitude for the happiness we have known within Davis-Townsend High. THE SENIOR CLASS DORIS Ross YoUNc. Testator DAVIS-TOWNSEND HIGH SCHOOL JUNE 7, 1957 DEAR LUCILLE, Thank you for the interesting letter that I got from you yesterday. As you ask me to, I'm going to try to tell you what all of our former classmates are doing now-seven years after their graduation. In Geometry Class, Ray Von always sat on pins and needles when Mr. Cross came to talk to the bus drivers, but now Ray Von has all bus drivers doing the same, because he is head of all School Buses in N-orth Carolina. One day last suinmer I decided to go for a swim, so where should I go but down to Rose Buds-but when I got there things certainly had changed. Instead of the old sign of Rose Buds Fishing Camp being there. there was a new sign which said Wayneis Rendevous. Natch! It being such a large place it would have a fence all around it. I was just about to leave when I heard a man ask if I wanted to come in, and guess who it XVEIS, Wayne Byerly of all people. Wayne told me that after our experience down there while we were Juniors, that he fell in love with the place and bought it from Rose Bud. Vfayne also said he had a private pool where Bobby Amick was acting as lifeguard while he was on vacation. Bobby is managing a chemistry department somewhere in the Virgin Islands. What they're doing is still a secret. After all this discussion I told Wayne that I thought I'd go for a swim and then dress because it was getting late. As I came out of the water, what should happen-B-U-T-the toothache. Gee whiz! It was that tooth I had been meaning to have pulled. Bobby told me that if I'd like to take a little vacation along with having my tooth pulled, that he knew just the place. Since you know me as you do-I don't have to tell you that I was all for it. But when he told me that the dentist he wanted me to see had his office in New York, I didn't know what to do. I finally decided that I needed the vacation and now would be just as good a time to take it as any. Bobby gave me a card with an address on it, but no name. Since I hadn't been in the new airport in Vlfinston, I decided to leave from there. At Winston I got my tickets for the trip and then went in search of someone to tell me all about New York and the places to be sure to see. At last I found an information booth and told the girl that I'd like to have some information on New York. She told me to step right in and that the manager would be with me in just a moment. In about five minutes I heard the clicking of high heels and saw the smart business-like dress of a cute red-head. Oh! No! Not Doris Rose. VVhy she used to couldn't answer a question in French. She even went Snipe Hunting one night, but I soon found out that Dottie had changed. After going to college for four years Dot applied for the job she n-ow has and got it with flying colors. She told me to be sure and see Alda Jean Dorsett and Marion Fine starred in that famous opera Madame Butterfly. Alda took her singing courses and Marion was trained also. She said they were grand. The plane is now leaving for New York- came over the loudspeaker. So my chat with Doris was called to a halt. As I boarded the plane a sweet voice said to me--Watch your step please-and who should this sweet voice belong to, but Daisy Ward. I always did think Daisy would make a wonderful air hostess and during the trip my thoughts were certainly confirmed. Finally landing in New York, I took the address Bob gave me and soon I found the dentistis office. As I walked in, a neat little nurse told me to be seated, that the doctor would see me in a minute. I picked up a book and began to thumb through it. Why! Loretta-a voice said, I didnit even know you at first. The nurse who had spoken to me was none other than Joretta Hunt. She wanted to know what I was doing in New York. Just as I'd started to explain the situation to Class Prophecy her the door opened and that dreaded word next came. So very slowly I went in, but soon all my fears left, because the dentist was that capable Harvey Clodfel- ter. After the most thrilling experience of having my tooth pulled, I left the office to do some shopping. Walking down Fifth Avenue I happened to see that a new shop had opened. The name of it was La Verne's and Nadine's. Since the names were very common I thought nothing of Nadine Garner and La Verne Beck who were in our room at school. As I stepped in the expensive looking shop, a pretty, efficient-looking woman started toward meg as she got closer I saw it was Nadine Garner. She told me after all the trouble she and La Verne Beck had getting clothes Cthis is because they wanted so manyj they decided to open a shop where they could have as many clothes as they wanted. After buying quite a few dresses and things-all the New York fashions of course, I left the shop and hailed a cab bound for a hotel. The name on the cab was Barnes Taxi Service and I soon learned Max was the owner of thirty cabs when he had started out with only three cabs. The driver recommended to me a hotel in which to stay. After I had regis- tered and gone to my room, a bellboy brought a big box of roses and told me they were from the management. Not being able to overlook such a pretty gift I went in search of the manager to thank him. Finaly I found the door marked manager and entered. Instead of a man as I was expecting, I found Barbara Jean Young. She soon explained to me that she was just a 3rd owner of the hotel plus being secretary. In a few minutes the door opened and in walked Margie Frank who soon told me it was she that was responsible for the flowers, but Sadie was the first to recognize my name on the register. Sadie, where is she? I asked. Soon both of them were talking at once, but Sadie walked in and by her soft, but firm gift of gab she explained that not being able to bear the thoughts of leaving each other, they combined their life's savings and bought the hotel. Boy! That was really a surprise. When I returned to my room I remembered all the new clothes and how awful my hair looked. I picked up the phone book-shut my eyes and picked a beauty shop. The name of it was The Beauty Salon. I got an appointment to have my hair fixed an hour later so I took down the address and left the hotel. Reaching the shop, a receptionist met me and told me I was the one hundredth person to call for an appointment that day and so I was to be honored by getting my hair fixed free by the owner of the shop. As I went into the private room where my hair was to be fixed a woman was standing with her back to me. Her hair was piled high on her head. Turning around I soon found the beautifully fixed hair belonged to Doris Anne Burkhart. After much gossiping she finally finished fixing my hair. VVishing to have a picture made before returning home, I called Margie and asked her to give me a recominenadtion of a good studio. She told me all her friends went to Crouses' Studio on 72nd Street. So dressed in my finest clothes I went to the Studio. A girl came up behind me and asked me to take off my coat. N-ow let me see where have I heard that voice before? Gail Anderson-what in the world are you doing here? Doing here? I own half of it. George and I bought it quite some time ago. Now, having such a short time to talk, Gail and I made good use of it, but soon-too soon for me-I had to go to the airport to catch my plane home. When I got my tickets the agent told me that perhaps I'd be interested to know that there was another passenger aboard goin gto Winston also and since he knew that we were both from Lexington, he thought perhaps we knew each other so he had put her in the seat beside me. I left then full of anxiety, I finally found my seat, but the seat beside me was still empty. At last I heard a giggle that could belong to no other person than Blanche Metters. W' e started chattering before she sat down. She told me that she was now coaching a girls' basketball team in Oregon and had been to New York to order some new equipment. She said that a few weeks ago Bettie Jean Kirk, who is fCon1:inued on Page 332 Senior Closs Song TUNE! She said that life to them seemed just one big holiday. Blanche also told me that Bobby Gene Hedrick was coaching the basketball and football teams at Carolina College where Wade Younts had turned into another Choo Choo. Myrtie and Wade are happily married and have a real pretty home. Blanche also told me that Joyce Snider had found a man that measured up to her ideals and they own a bakery in Asheboro-where Joyce has really put her baking to good use. Peggy Tuttle and Alton are still going together, but now they are together for life. Peggy is still a good basketball player and so sometimes gets up teams of her own to play others. The plane went zooming down through the clouds and all too soon we had reached Winston. As I got on the bus to come back to good old Lexington, someone took hold of my arm to help me up. When I said Thank you, I was really surprised. It was Lacy Pierce. He makes a very good driver. I know of course that you've been to the new Kozy since it's under the new management of Lawrence Black, Charles Hedrick, and Billy Curry. 'I'hey're not married and are really making the dough off this new night club. Betty Joyce Beck is now Mrs. Bill Wright as I expect you probably know. They have a very cute little house down Silver Valley way. Since Druid Crotts was such a good speaker in high school, he went to Law School and is now practicing law in High Point, but all this hasn't changed him a bit. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith CBetty Lou and Robertl have a very fine home and Robert is still trying to teach fSallyJ as he calls her, Geometry. Robert Russell said he thought he'd worked at the Saw Mill long enough so he bought some interest in the Mill Now he sits back and gives the orders. Earnestine Burkhart got married exactly one year after we graduated. She and Noel have a pretty home in Denton close to the Surratts. Mavis Hatley and Bettie Faye Beck are now running a DeSoto place in Lex- ington. Mavis was the first girl bus driver at D. T. and now she's the Hrst woman car dealer in Lexington. Hoover and Ann B. or Mr. and lVIrs. Paul Conrad play professional basket- ball, but they've just left for Florida to spend about two years' vacation. Willa Mae Grubb is teaching school and I hear all the kids are crazy about her. Pansy Avery with the title of Most Likely to Succeed did succeed-in get- ing her man, Charles Campbell. I know you didn't know Pansy, because she just entered our school in our senior year, but she is real sweet. Also another new one in our room this year was Jean Holston. She's Finishing her education at Carolina College. She's very smart and will really go places. Joe Bill Young is still very cute and still single. He's the same old Joe Bill. Since he loves to square dance, he is now the owner of a hill-billy band and holds square dances every Saturday night. Lucille, if you want to know anything else, please write me again. I'll probably see you next Sunday at Church. Bye for now, LORETTA BECK, Prophet ff? ?' H? S 1 --N. 4--:ik Mr' ElGHTH GRADE Teacher MR.
