YELLOW JACKET Nineteen Seventy-Three Nixon vs. McGovern The ,72-,73 school year opened with Mike Holder portraying the President and Ronnie Long in the role of Senator McGovern. Accom- panied by their staff, their trusty Secret Service men, and their smiling families, the candidates were warmly received by the Student Body. Moderators for the program were: Jerry Becker Rcasoner, Gene McMahan Mudd, and Dwain Scott Cronkite. 3 4 The smell of burning rubber, the groans of injured drivers, the roar of the crowd . . .all add up to the excitement and glamour of the men who flirt with death and the women who wait . . . 5 I believe in music . . . What is to come we know not. But we know that what has been was good - was good to show, Better to hide, and best of all to bear. We are the masters of the days that were; we have lived, we have loved . . . William Ernest Henley 9 1972-73 Homecoming Court Tell them, dear, that if eyes were made for seeing. Then Beauty is it's own excuse for being . . . 12 13 14 Estel Long, Mrs. Simmons, Hubert Bodenhamer, and Mr. Austin, Principal. The first graduating class of Davis High. Each year the Yellow Jacket is dedicated to an influential member of the Davis School family. This year the staff has selected a teacher who merits recognition not only for her classroom skills but for her overall participation in school and community life. She is a lady of boundless enthusiasm who always takes her work seriously . . . never herself. The 1973 Yellow Jacket is proudly dedicated to . . . IS Mrs. Innes Simmons A crowd is not company, and faces are but a gallery of pictures, and talk but a tinkling cymbal when there is no love. 16 ADMINISTRATION Congratulations to you, the Seniors of Davis High for your achievements and accomplishments. Your future, to a large measure, depends upon how well you have met the challenges of your high school days • May you always be true to yourself, God, and cou ntry. Recognizing that as you give yourself to God and others, your life will be richer and fuller. Sincerely, James R. McCreary james r. McCreary Principal, Davis High School LLOYD C. Ga. - With high school football beginning to look more and more like the pros, complete with specialists at every position and big-bucks athletic programs primed to produce winners at any cost, it's a real pleasure to get back to the roots of the sport by vis- iting a school like Davis, on Sand Mountain near Trenton. Football is taken seriously here, to be sure, but it’s on a ' different level, one more likely to produce character than headlines. Coach Johnny Denton has a total of 20 boys out for his team this year, not even enough to hold a full scale scrimmage. They’ve been prac- ticing during the evenings since most team members have summer jobs during the day. Some work in factories, oth- ers are in tomatoes” and oc- casionally miss practice be- cause they don't get back from Chattanooga's Curb Market in time. And if they aren’t tired before they start practice, it's guaranteed they will be after- wards. Coach Denton, assisted by Byron Ballard, has been work- By TOM SNOW News-Free Press Sports Writer ing his boys hard the past few weeks in anticipation of a full slate of 10 games this fall. They open with Lookout Valley this Friday, and they'll be meeting some pretty tough North Georgia teams in the coming weeks. The Davis Yellow Jackets are a young team made up mostly of sophomores, and Denton will be counting heavily on leadership from co-captains Kerry Hartline and Garry Pra- ter. Hartline is a senior guard, and Prater, although only a sophomore, would be a credit to any team's line at the tackle position. Most of the other team mem- bers are on the small side, but they're wiry and tough. Unlike some city boys”, many of the team members have worked all their lives and won’t give up when the going gets tough. Although the Yellow Jackets should prove to be a better team than last year, when they finished with a 3-7 season, they'll be going up against j ronger competition. Schools such as Adairsville, Region C champs last year, and Trion, winners in Region B. should provide a real test for their mettle. The North Sand Moun- tain game on September 9, a traditional rivalry, should pro- vide an exciting contest. Last year Davis played them twice, once early in the fall and then later to wind up the season. The Yellow Jackets were defeated 20-0 in that ini- tial outing, but improved great- ly in subsequent games and came back to beat the North Sand Mountain squad 42-16 in the season finale, intercepting five passes in the process. Coach Denton is hoping for the same kind of performance from his defense throughout the season this year, and should he get it. he just might surprise some of the big teams this fall with his little 20-man squad. After all, when you've only got a total of 167 students in a school and you get 20 of them out for football, you’re off to a pretty good start. The schedule: Sept. 1-at Lookout Valley; Se pt 8-at N. Sand Mountain; Sept. 15-at Adairsville; Sept. 22-V alley Point; Sept. 29-Weptside; Oct. 6-Gordon Lee; Oct. 13-Trion; Oct. 20-at Armuchee; Nov. 3-at Red Bud; Nov. 10-at Dade Co. 1972 Football Cheerleaders SHERRY WEST Senior MALINDA BODENHAMER Senior TERESA ROGERS Senior 84 DEBBIE GARNER Junior DIANA LONG Sophomore JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM Coach John Heam DAVIS LITTLE LEAGUE REGIONAL CHAMPIONS Coach Otis Poe FARM LEAGUE ALL-STARS Coach Coy Page 85 Boys’ Varsity Basketball 72- 73 KERRY LEE HARTLINE Senior, Forward LONNIE TRIPP Senior, Forward 86 ROBERT LAMBERTH Senior, Guard LARRY YORK Senior, Center JIMMY PHILLIPS Junior, Center GENE McMAHAN RONNIE LONG DENNIS HARTLINE Junior, Guard Junior, Forward Sophomore, Guard GREG POE Sophomore, Forward STEVE PATTON Freshman, Guard Coaches FRANK STARKEY BYRON BALLARD 87 Girls’ Varsity Basketball 72-73 88 LANITA HOOPER Senior forward DEBBIE JONES Senior Guard SONJA MICHAELS Senior Guard Coach Hooper With Co-Captains Lanita and Sonja 89 CAROLYN JONES Junior Forward EILEEN HOOPER Junior Guard SYD WILSON Junior Guard BETTY CARTER Sophomore Forward SANDY CRISP Sophomore Guard SUSIE LANE Sophomore Guard MYRA GRANT VANESSA SIMMONS Freshman Forward Freshman Forward CAROL HOOPER Coach 90 B Team Basketball Seventh and Eighth Grade Basketball Seventh and Eighth Grade Basketball 1972-1973 Basketball Cheerleaders DIANA LONG SHARON BAKER VICKIE BETHUNE Sophomore Junior Sophomore 92 JUNE PATTON Sophomore DEBBIE GROSS Junior Peewees DEBBIE GARNER Junior ELAINE SMITH DENIESE GARNER JEAN PALMER TERESA ELLIS LINDA PALMER DONNA BETHUNE 93 Student Council Future Homemakers 96 Senior Beta Club Junior Beta Club 97 Co-Ed Y Senior 4-H 98 Junior 4-H Cloverleaf 4-H 99 D-Club Future Business Leaders UTURE USINESS EADERS too Future Teachers Pep Club 101 1973 Yellow Jacket Staff SONJA MICHAELS FREDIA IVEY BARBARA HARRIS 102 DEBBIE JONES STEPHEN YORK JANET PATTON EILEEN HOOPER ROSE CLOUD NOT PICTURED: BRENDA CLARK DWAIN SCOTT GL1NDA CROFT JUDY SCOTT Office Aides Counselor Aides Library Aides ACTIVITIES 1973 Male Beauty Contest . . . the excitement was unbear- able.
