When asked about his team's overall performance head coach Don Lanphear stated, We were a truly tough football team. They Cplayersl played every game for a full 48 minutes and never gave-up. As the season play began the Spartans came off a hard loss to Lincoln to win their next seven games en route to the showdown with strong cross town rival Downey High. The Spartan's new quarterback Hugo Ramos, a junior transfer from Downey, led the team passing to talented junior wide receiver Brad Zwahlen. The Spartans posted wins in non-league games over Lodi, Central, Modesto and Oakdale. The league opener came on a cold Friday night at Turlock High's home field. The Spartans opened their league season beating Turlock 28-17. The next week the Spartans claimed an important victory over Atwater, beating the Falcons 10-3. It was a tremendous victory for us, coach Lanphear exclaimed after the game. The Davis defense played extremely well limiting Atwater's high-powered option attack to 60 yards rushing and only 65 yards passing. Davis' lone touchdown came in the second period, on a 60-yard pass from Ramos to Zwahlen. Mark H. Nelson later kicked a 28-yard field goal, the only score in the second half. The showdown with Downey came on November 15. Downey, boasting an impressive undefeated record, met the Spartans in a spine-tingling game. When the last buzzer sounded, the Spartans, who had started what would have been a remarkable comeback, fell short losing 14-10. Downey scored their only points on two touchdown runs in the first period. Davis was behind at the half with the score reading 14-0. As second half play began lohn Chituras stepped in for injured quarterback Hugo Ramos. Chituras connected with Chance Williams on a 10-yard pass midway through the third quarter with the PAT good to make the score 14-7. Chituras then led the team on a drive in the first play of the fourth period that resulted in a 30-yard field goal by Mark H. Nelson. The last 30 seconds of the game were truly exhilarating. With less than 30 seconds on the clock the Knights were forced to punt from their own 36-yard line. Lanphear knowing a return would

use too much time sent his special team after the punter. Anthony Woods fTorpedol blocked the punt and Peter Adamakis recovered for the Spartans with five seconds on the clock. As time ticked down Chituras took the snap and looked for Zwahlen in the end zone. A Downey player came out of the blue slapping down the pass as time ran out. Despite their loss, Davis found themselves in the section play-offs facing St. Marys. With both quarterbacks injured Adamakis passed for the first one and one half periods. Ramos, with limited movement, came in the second quarter leading the Spartan rally late in the game for two touchdown passes to tight end Adamakis and wide receiver Williams. Plagued by mistakes throughout the game, the Spartans fell short of a win losing 22-19. Contributing to the Davis offense were outstanding players Adamakis, tight end, Mike Naranjo, tail back, Bob Barnes, center, Bill DeVore, wide 66 receiver, Ron Owens, Kevin Kelly, and Kevin Brisco all on the offensive line. The Davis offense was led by two-way offensivefdefensive players Brad Zwahlen and team most valuable player Hugo Ramos. The offense finished first in league statistics. Davis defense was led by linebacker Curtis Colvin. Other key players were Eric Dixon and Chituras, defensive backs, Iohn Sarkis, Stan Cook, Scott Sherman and Aaron Hamilton, defensive linemen. S Several players were named to the league all-conference team. Offensively Ramos, Barnes, Zwahlen, Kelly and Nelson were voted as outstanding players. On the defensive team Zwahlen was the only first team recipient. Named to the'all-district team were Ramos and Zwahlen. Summing up the team itself, Coach Lanphear stated, They were a true inspiration to me personally. - Amy Halley Varsity Football: KFIRST ROWJ Bryan Hayes, Peter Adamakis, Hug Ramos, Brad Zwahlen, Iohn Chituras CSECOND ROWJ Chris Todd, Mil Titus, Mark Nelson, Andy Carvalho, Sean Buchanan CTHIRD ROWJ R Gunn, Adam Tustison, Dan Bispo, Greg Bennett, Steve Schneidl QFOURTH ROWD Philip Martinez, Floyd Slaughter, Aaron Hamilton, Bc Barnes, Terry Wiggs, Kevin Prock, Mitch Zak KFIFTH ROWJ Kevin Kell Dennis Iones, Todd Sleeman, Curtis Colvin KSIXTH ROWJ Bria Ferguson, Iohn Sarkis, Scott Sherman, Oke Ransome, Stan Cook, Bria Hobbs, Dan Dorman, Ron Black, Ron Owens CSEVENTH ROWJ Kev Brisco, Nick Puccinelli, Nick Lemmo, Chance Williams, Eric Dixon, B Devore, Craig Klopatek, Mark H.
