'N k lT:ia. s . .s..' V F' .-vfii'-1-ew: Y' its A . -i t Tough Spartan team places second in CCC The 1985 varsity football team placed second in the CCC with an overall record of 7-4. When asked about his team's overall performance head coach Don Lanphear stated, We were a truly tough football team. They Cplayersl played every game for a full 48 minutes and never gave-up. As the season play began the Spartans came off a hard loss to Lincoln to win their next seven games en route to the showdown with strong cross town rival Downey High. The Spartan's new quarterback Hugo Ramos, a junior transfer from Downey, led the team passing to talented junior wide receiver Brad Zwahlen. The Spartans posted wins in non-league games over Lodi, Central, Modesto and Oakdale. The league opener came on a cold Friday night at Turlock High's home field. The Spartans opened their league season beating Turlock 28-17. The next week the Spartans claimed an important victory over Atwater, beating the Falcons 10-3. It was a tremendous victory for us, coach Lanphear exclaimed after the game. The Davis defense played extremely well limiting Atwater's high-powered option attack to 60 yards rushing and only 65 yards passing. Davis' lone touchdown came in the second period, on a 60-yard pass from Ramos to Zwahlen. Mark H. Nelson later kicked a 28-yard field goal, the only score in the second half. The showdown with Downey came on November 15. Downey, boasting an impressive undefeated record, met the Spartans in a spine-tingling game. When the last buzzer sounded, the Spartans, who had started what would have been a remarkable comeback, fell short losing 14-10. Downey scored their only points on two touchdown runs in the first period. Davis was behind at the half with the score reading 14-0. As second half play began lohn Chituras stepped in for injured quarterback Hugo Ramos. Chituras connected with Chance Williams on a 10-yard pass midway through the third quarter with the PAT good to make the score 14-7. Chituras then led the team on a drive in the first play of the fourth period that resulted in a 30-yard field goal by Mark H. Nelson. The last 30 seconds of the game were truly exhilarating.
