Competitions draw DECA to Disneyland Distributive Education Clubs of America was busy with fundraisers and competitions all year. The mini conference and regionals were held in Modesto with the state event at Anaheim where everyone enjoyed Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm while participating in the competitions. State finalists went on to the Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. Typical, yet profitable, candy sales raised money. Stuffed teddy bears were another successful DECA sale item. Advisors were Debbie Herrman and Teresa Alves, president Heather I-Iousewright, vice-presidents Randy Felthouse and Tai Lam, treasurer john Wheeler, secretary Betsy Goodrow and reporter Steve Orique. - Toni lason DECA: Steven Orique, Ronald Entriken. Future preparation Vocational Industrial Club of America is nationally expanding each year. GDHS had 23 active members who participated in competitions statewide. Advisor Tom Weber commented, The club helps with job placement. At competitions you're always being watched by companies. Futuristic goals held by speakers Traditions of excellence were not broken by the year's speech team. From humerous interpretations to heated Lincoln-Douglas debates, the group maintained a demanding schedule of endless research, practice, and perfection. The Spartans ranked in the top four competing with 15 other schools. Throughout the year the 38 member team participated in over 20 competitions. They traveled to such places as Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly, and University of the Pacific. As the speech team continued to win trophies by the dozen, they kept a futuristic goal in mind. The young team consisted mainly of juniors and sophmores all with exceptional talent and potential. We have an outstanding junior team, stated advisor Ken Adair. We expect future teams to be even more successful with their experience.
