Expectations high Tremendous! is what coach Bruce Emerson said of varsity softball team's spirit. The team had the potential to be undefeated in league play. Though coach Emerson says that every player is a winner, the team had the extra help of these valuable players: Jenifer Wyatt, first team all CCC, Kristi Bettencourt and Debbie Butterfield, second team all CCC. In addition, Barbara Blakeslee, catcher, Sue Ellen Endicott, outfielder, Heather Morgan, third base, and Sheila Sieferer, pitcher and outfielder were also valuable players. The team's challenge was to maintain the school's championship string. Most competition came from Merced and Beyer. In junior varsity softball, coach Dick Erler felt tough competition came from Downey, Merced, Beyer and Turlock. Standout players were Dawn Gillaspy and Toni Mawyer, both freshmen. - Kimberly Barrett

Aquatics make waves As the sun rose over the horizon, swim managers ambled into the pool area to take covers off the pool. Steam bellowed from the top of the crystal- clear water, and swimmers jumped into the pool hoping the morning's workout wouldn't be too painstaking. Ten 100's on 1:4O,, screamed coach Brent Bohlender. As practice drew to an end, swimmers ran to locker rooms to prepare for school. What laid ahead of them? Why, another practice at 2:1O! Such was a day in the lives of Davis High swimmers. For divers practice generated a different sensation: that of falling. During practice these daredevils hurled themselves off the low and high dives attempting to perfect that back flip or one and one half dive. Unfortunately, every dive was not perfect and some ended up in a painful bellyflop. Turlock and Merced posed definite threats for both the swimmers and divers. Those expected to do well were Iim Sprott, Eric Sharar, Mike Niemi, Eric Corgiat, Amy Halley, Dawn Pratt and Leah Goldman. Chris Craft, Eric Dixon, jennifer Lowe, Cami Cause and Iulie Guthrie were predicted to execute great dives for Davis aquatics. - Licia Pope
