Boys tennis aims for CCC With high expectations boys tennis coach Darryl Torre felt, This could be one of Davis High School's best tennis teams. Starting the season with the previous year's players, the team gained strong players in freshman Derek Daily and foreign exchange student Olaf Sachau. Top three players were Sachau, Steve Matthews and Ed Nelson. Players devoted every Monday thru Thursday after school to playing the game. Leaders of the green Golf team was stronger than any of the teams the school has fielded in the past few years according to coach Dick Stafford. Past teams have been strong, but never as well balanced as this team. Only a few points separted the team's number 1 ranked player and its number 6 ranked player. Wins were definitely a team effort. Another positive point was the team's youth: Davis should have a fine golf team for the next few years. Coach Stafford was particularly impressed by Dana Arnold stating, She couldn't drive as far as some other members of the team so it took her more strokes to get to the green, but she played so well that she ended up with excellent scores. The only real competition for the Spartans was Merced. They played very well and were the only team that was a serious threat to Davis. In their first match together Davis topped Merced by a single stroke.
