Death taxes and They say that in life there are two sure events: death and taxes. For students at Davis, another event was also inevitable that was both deathly and taxing: TESTS! Throughout our four-year-stay at high school, tests came at us from all sides. Required tests like the Mastery and Competency tests were common examples. For seniors CAP CCalifornia Assessment Programl tests were taken at the beginning of the year, and for those hearty souls who were college bound, the PSAT Cljreliminary Scholastic Achievement Testl, SAT, and ACT fAmerican College Testi all ominously loomed ahead. In addition to required tests, students also faced the fear of everyday classroom quizzes, exams, chapter tests and, of course, finals. Yet amid all this fretting and fuming, remember that there was that light at the end of the tunnel, and it would all be behind you when that diploma was in your hand... unless you were one of those who had the will and determination to withstand the fiery flames of the college testing grounds, Yet, all the same ,... when that diploma is in your hand .... - Heather Hajek il Y tk X if 'Ss it Xggf y J . Peer facilitators, inter-high p Promoting better communication between students and the board of kducation, allowing students from different high schools to exchange ideas, and helping students develop leadership skills was the purpose of Inter-High. Students participating in .Inter-High benefitted by learning how fthe school system works. Davis has been active in Inter-High for many years. All Inter-I-Iigh officers attended Davis: Becky Bowers, president, Mike Toyryla, vice-president, Kate Renwick, secretaryltreasurer. To Becky Powers Inter-High has been a positive experience for Davis. It has given Davis students the opportunity to organize activities district wide, work with all four schools' student councils, and expand their knowledge of how our district operates. Confidentiality is primary, stated Melinda Niemi, peer facilitating advisor. Ms. Niemi added that besides being confidential, facilitators were caring, genuine and trustworthy. Students who were peer facilitators were either recommended by staff members or had requested to become one. Their training was one quarter long and consisted aid Davis primarily of listening and communica- tion skills. A few of peer facilitating's activities consisted of new student orientation, where each new student received a facilitator, ineligibility interviews, where facilitators gave students information as to how they could become eligible for extra curricular activities, a big brother and sister program provided to selected students at Somerset Iunior High, and facilitating at Hutton House for runaways. - Michele Remsing, Kiki Tzagarakis INH Peer Facilitating: CFRCNT ROW?
