Dancers display diversity Dancers leaped, jumped and kicked their way through the traditional barriers of dance. New instructor Debbie Svopa challenged dance students with a mixture of jazz, ballet and modern. Using these new types of dance, dancers taught and performed for the elementary levels. Other activities included a modernljazz workshop and perform- ance at Mills College. As one of 16 schools attending, Davis was an impressive example of high school dance instruction. Dancers also broadened their ability to critique by viewing the Dance Theater of Harlem. We have had a very busy and educational year, said Debbie Svopa. Performance is the ultimate goal for students with excellent technique and choreographic skills. Dancers had several performing opportunities: the Christmas concert, a March informal concert, Fine Arts Week and the annual spring concert. Fundraisers included a successful spaghetti dinner and calendar sales. These profits aided in funding professional master classes as well as cultural field trips. - Ienifer Quesenberry
