Phil IIVIH THE DAVHNQHS Junior Class History N August 31, 1925, six Eighth Grade students enrolled as Freshmen in the Davis High School, namely, Ruth Eberly, Viola Nath, Lucile Meier, Jason Aiflerbaugh, Alvin DeGunther, and Edwin Gunderson. To our sorrow The Initiation was held shortly after enrollment. In a few days the little class of six was organized. For the flower we chose the Carnation, class colors, pink and white, and motto, Dig, The Freshman year was a prosperous and happy one, but there was one disappointment that we plainly remember, and that was the loss of one of our classmates, Ruth Eberly. On August 25, 1926, these same ones returned, but now we were Sophomores. September 6, 1927, a sextette composed of the same members as the preceding year and a new member, Gladys Walter, enrolled as Juniors. The class was organized and the following officers chosen: President, Viola Nath, Vice President, Gladys Walter, and Secretary and Treasurer, Lucile Meier. Our flower is still the carnation, our colors, pink and white, and our motto, Dig, We, the Juniors, have answered our motto, and are looking forward to graduation. LUCILE MEIER. Sophomore Class History N SEPTEMBER of the year 1926, nine Freshmen enrolled as members of the Davis High School. Within a month the class was initiated, its officers elected, and Mr. Bradley chosen as our class adviser. A few months after school started John Lentz entered school which made the enrollment of five girls and five boys. John, however, after a few weeks of study dropped out, again placing the boys in the minority, but the arrival of Jake Kneubuehl again brought the count to five and five. In the latter part of the year the class presented the play Go Slow, Mary. When 'September again rolled around we found, to our sorrow, that two of our classmates had fallen by the way. Both Rose Schurch and Milton Otte failed to put in an appearance. The class, which was organized in September, chose as its officers: President, Zelma DeGunther, Vice President, Jake Kneubuehl, Secretary and Treasurer, Elmer Lestikow, Faculty Adviser, Miss Williams. It is interesting to note that of the eleven members who have at some time or other enrolled as members of the class, all at the time of registra- tion, were the same age. ELMER LESTIKOW. They were Florence Horstmeier, Epleyanna District No. 303 Elmer Lapp, Henze District No. 285 and Josephine Henderson, of Petersburg, Wisconsin. Shortly after school opened our class was organized .The following oflicers were elected: President, Helen Mench, Vice President, Marion Mench, Secretary and Treasurer, Kendall Bradley, Class Sponsor, Miss Bloem. We selected for our class colors, red and white, and rose as our class flower. After several days' discussion we agreed to have as our class motto: 4 us 2B2 is to B natural. Class dues on a monthly basis were decided upon. About three weeks after school we attended our first party of the year, the initiation party. Although we considered ourselves very ill-treated, we agreed that we were well fed. In the latter part of November we were disappointed in having Josephine quit school. Several of us have been on the honor roll a number of times. We have all studied hard this year and are looking forward to a pleasant school future. HELEN MENCH. -- Ql . We have not had a team for two years, so We wanted to make this team a success. Our opening game was with Durand on the Durand fioor, Friday, November 22nd. The floor being large gave us pep and we won 24 to 14. Our first home game was with Pearl City, December 3rd. It was a real game. When the whistle blew for the end of the game the score was 17 to 17. In the extra period Pearl City made two baskets to our one, making the score 21 to 19. The following Friday night we played the Alumni. The High School proved too much for them and won 48 to 13. This game gave our team courage and we went to Pearl City winning 13 to 12. Our next home game was with Seward. This was another exciting game. It was an over-time game which ended 28 to 26 in Seward's favor. During vacation we played Durand' in a slow game which ended 22 to 9 in our favor. On January 6th we journeyed to Winslow only to come home beaten 12 to 11. We played under many disadvantages. The following week we practiced hard to get in shape for the Dakota game January 20th. It was a walk-away for our team, the score being 34 to 15. On January 25th We played the strong Pecatonica players, but were strong enough to down them, the score being 20 to 18. The following Friday night we played Orangeville in a slow game which ended 10 to 22 in our favor. In returning the game with Pecatonica we were defeated 38 to 25. On February 10th we played Dakota here. Our team was slow in start- ing, but when we got started we ran away from them, winning 23 to 11. February 27th Winslow gave us a return game. It was a good game which ended 23 to 17 in our favor. The following Tuesday night We motored to Orangeville only to be defeated 29 to 25. This was the last game before the tournament. Here they were powdered and massaged, but not with, the usual cosmetics. They were then conducted through the Palace of Honors, amid the agonized groans of its victims. The guests were next taken to the upper floor, where after further administration they were officially declared members of the Davis High School. As a suitable climax for the evening, refreshments were served at nine-thirty. ELMER LESTIKOW. Freshman Treasure Hunt The Freshmen gave their first party November 8th, 1927. A new feature of this being a treasure hunt. The treasures were hidden in various parts of the town and a great interest was taken in finding them. After this the whole body returned to the school for refreshments. While prep- arations were made for the lunch most of us enjoyed music, songs, games, etc. Some of the boys opened a new organization called The Bachelor's Club, the regulations of which being very strict. After the refreshments were served the party came to a close and most of us made for the loop of Davis. Much serenading took place on the way home from the party, featuring My Wild Irish Rose. KE NDALL BRADLEY. Magazine Sale The magazine sale which is carried on annually by our school was held in the latter part of September this year. The school handling the publications of the Crowell Publishing Company. The student salesmen selling subscriptions for The American, Collier's , The Mentor, The Ladies' Home Journal, and Farm and Fireside. In order to make the salesmen more interested and to create a spirit of competition, sides were chosen, the reds, the greens and the blues, Individual rewards were given to the leading salesmen, while, thanks to the patronage of the people, the campaign netted the school a substantial profit. HENZE Lower Grades Upper Grades Pupils of the Upper Grades i ' 1 Y Pupils of the Lower Grades fr sr E D av r N o r s High School Prophecy BOARDED the Chicago, Milwaukee 8: St. Paul train at Davis and was on my way to Chicago. The train being crowded,I walked up and sat down beside a quite stout, neatly dressed lady. For a few moments I sat silently looking about the coach. Finally I looked at the lady beside me and could hardly believe my eyes. I recognized the woman as my old school mate, Fern Meinert. I spoke to her and not until then did she recognize me. She said she was on her way to Chicago also. She said she lived in Evanston. Of course I inquired as to whem she was staying with. She informed me she and Jake Kneubuehl fformerly a Davis chapj, had been married three years and had been living in Evanston all the time. I next asked her if she had heard of any more of the D. H. S. bunch. Fern said she had just been down visiting Mr. and Mrs. Bradley, known as Kendall Bradley and Lucile Meier in school days. They were living in Rockford. Kendall was a well known dentist of the city, and Lucile was working in a confectionery store. Fern also said that Willie Brault was a professional barber in Evanston and that she and Jake had all their barbering done there. I asked if she knew where Gladys Walter was. She told me Alvin DeGunther and she had been married for a number of years and were living in New York. O, Yes! Fern said Viola Nath owned a beauty parlor in Chicago and Zelma DeGunther was working for her. Of course it was no surprise to me when she said that Viola and Jason Afiierbaugh were engaged. I remembered that they were quite good friends in school. When we had finished our little chat we found ourselves almost in Chicago. It wasn't long until a familiar figure made its way into our coach and called, Chicago! Chicago! I later found this person to be Edwin Gunderson. I had only a few minutes to talk to him. He said his home was in the city of Bardwell. At last the train came to a halt and Fern and I and many other people were soon crowding and pushing one another about in a hurry to get off the train. I then left Fern and wandered around in the crowd until I finally found Helen Mench, whom I was to visit for a few days. Helen led me to a taxicab in which we were to ride to her home. As we approached the taxi I recognized the driver, Elmer Lapp. He didn't remember me though. After riding for quite a while the taxi stopped in front of a large white house. Helen said that this was where she lived. We got out and made our way into the house. When I had removed my wraps and taken my grips up stairs to my room, I came down and walked into the dining room. Helen soon came in and we sat down and visited for awhile. At half-past five we began to get supper. I heard a scufiiing of feet on the back porch and in walked a tall, light haired man. I gave a gasp and stared with wide opened eyes. It was Milton Benning. Helen quietly stepped up and introduced me to Milton telling me he was her husband. That night after supper Helen and Milton took me to one of their friend's houses to a party. When everyone had arrived, the hostess intro- duced me to each individual. Among those I met was Arlene Meier, a well known society lady, and Elmer Lestikow, a well known lawyer. After the party we went home and sat up awhile and visited. I asked where Fred Tielkemeier was, and Milton replied the last he had heard of him he was owner of a large sheep ranch in Colorado. Helen said Verna Tielkemeier was a stenographer in an office in Chicago and that she saw her quite often. Josephine Henderson was an office girl for a dentist in Evanston. Florence Horstmeier was a librarian in a large library in Chicago. Milton and Helen said while they were on their honeymoon in Los Angeles they saw Arvilla Fiene and Irma Anderson. They were both married and the two couples had bought a restaurant and were running it together. Helen said they had eaten one of their best dinners there. After a few more days' visit I went back to Davis and lived happily MARIAN MENCH. ever after. 'r H E D mr r N Q r s ALUMNI 1889 fThe First Classl Carrie Anderson. Ella S. Goldfl' Mabel Gold. .
