SENIOR REVIEW On September 7, 1955, ninety of us in the Class of '59 began 'our first day at high school. We got along very well- we made lots of friends, our studies were going well, a number of our boys went out for sports - until the Freshman Reception night. We were sure our doom was sealed as we walked through the door into the gym. However, we were pleasantly sur- prised when this affair turned out to be a very enjoyable dance. On February 18 we threw our annual dance, the Freshman Fling. The theme was Candyland with music by Mal Dudley. Everyone seemed to like our dance, for we were enthusiastically congratulated by everyone -- including the seniors. Our class presidents were Tony Lucero and Bonnie Stormont. The thing that made us feel proudest of Davis High School was our football championship which the varsity football team won under the expert coaching of Coach Dewey Halden. Though our boys hadn't had any part of this victory, we still felt very proud to be a part of Davis High. We were looking forward to our sophomore year. As Sophomores we put on the first dance of the year - the Sophomore Hop. The Night Hawks provided music for Les Rues de Paris, the theme of our dance. We seemed to have successfulitis, for this was our second well-attended dance. To lead our class, we elected Paul Olmo and Kay Nicholson for our presidents. One of our fondest memories of this year was the Sophomore Assembly - Around the World in Eighty Minutesf' In our eighty minutes we visited Italy and saw a rather sad opera with such stars as Tom Martinez and Iay Stromgren, we arrived in Germany to hear a Burgermeister Band with Gil Pomeroy and Knute Fisher and several others, as we landed in China we viewed an unfortunate waiteris plight as portrayed by Joyce Lueckemanng while in Hawaii we were greeted by a traditional hula done by five girls of which Betty Parsons and Bonnie Stormont were a part, we concluded our trip in Mexico where Sunny Mullin and Sharon Heidanus portrayed two rather sleepy natives. In September of 1957 we bade a fond farewell to our carefree sopho- more year and assumed the responsibility of being juniors. As class leaders we chose Knute Fisher and Paul Olmo for presidents. Socially we held a lovely Junior Prom. With the music of Carlton Hall and the theme Moon- light Enchantmentf, our dance was a grand and gay affair. Scholastically, our class did well in courses such as English III, U.S. history, chemistry, and algebra II. The results of the Iowa tests were above the nation's average. Then, in the National Merit Scholarship tests three of our class members qualified for the semi-finals. These three were Paul Olmo, Emily Yarnall, and Valerie Vann. We were then ready for our senior year. As seniors we were mainly responsible for the school government. There were some changes made which greatly improved it. Among them were the election of songleaders instead of the usual selection method. For the leaders of our class government, we elected Jay Stromgren and Paul Olmo as presidents. Our dance-the Senior Ball-was held on May 23. The music and motif provided a truly lovely ball. It was fitting that as seniors we should win another football championship -the second in four years. This year, however, the varsity was mainly composed of our senior boys. Although our four years in high school were sometimes difficult and tiring, we will look back on them with nostalgia and perhaps a bit of envy at not being able to do them over. 17
