ORE than three centuries ago, our forefathers came to Amer- ica. These brave pioneers knew that their freedom would be maintained at great cost to them- selves and to their children. We have been threatened repeatedly by those who would make us puppets in the hands of a dictator; and just as often Americans have taken up arms and have given their lives in the preservation of our independence. In World War II, Davis and Elkins College achieved distinction in training men and women for service in a global conflict. Many hun- dreds of her students and alumni shared in this greatest struggle against the forces of oppression in the history of mankind. Without exception, their devotion to duty reflected honor upon Alma Mater. All lovers of liberty will be eternally grateful to them. We shall forever cherish the memory of those sons of the College who made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our freedom. With hearts full of gratitude we respectfully dedicate this issue of the SENATUS to the men who gave their lives in World War II that we might continue to enjoy the fruits of liberty. R.B-PURDGIM, President, Davis and Elkins College Senatus 4
