Marys Ley The 1947 SHNATUS Published by the SENATUS STAFF DAVIS - ELKINS COLLEGE ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA ORE than three centuries ago, our forefathers came to Amer- ica. These brave pioneers knew that their freedom would be maintained at great cost to them- selves and to their children. We have been threatened repeatedly by those who would make us puppets in the hands of a dictator; and just as often Americans have taken up arms and have given their lives in the preservation of our independence. In World War II, Davis and Elkins College achieved distinction in training men and women for service in a global conflict. Many hun- dreds of her students and alumni shared in this greatest struggle against the forces of oppression in the history of mankind. Without exception, their devotion to duty reflected honor upon Alma Mater. All lovers of liberty will be eternally grateful to them. We shall forever cherish the memory of those sons of the College who made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our freedom. With hearts full of gratitude we respectfully dedicate this issue of the SENATUS to the men who gave their lives in World War II that we might continue to enjoy the fruits of liberty. Nineteen freshmen made their first trip “up the hill” to begin what is known as orientation—Webster’s Dictionary didn’t help us with that word. A quiet meeting in the library with Dean Talbot assured us that we could stay and attempt a college career. At first glance we thought we’d made a mistake and entered a military school, and why not? We stood awed at the precise and stiff appearance of 200 aviation cadets, undergoing training here at the time. We led an army life and loved it. September, 1944. Our Sophomore year saw only eleven “‘veteran’”’ students return, two men and nine girls. We elected officers and chose Elizabeth Ann Harper to lead us. Gene Valentine was Vice-President, Wallace Gibbs, Secretary, and Irene: Goode, Student Council Representative. With the departure of the army, out college life actually began. ‘The man shortage was acute, necessitating the election of a female Student Body President, unheard of before in the college’s history. However, we managed to struggle through and plan for a glorious year as UPPER CLASSMEN. September, 1945. Due to returning veterans, our Junior Class had doubled its previous membership, now consisting of twenty-three members. We elected Gene Valentine as President, Hilda Burky as Vice-President, Irene Goode as Secretary, June Viguesney as Treasurer, and Nancy Armentrout as Student Coun- cil Representatiy 4,he year was truly a post-war one with complete reorganization of all groups to agree with pre-war standards. May Day was a gala affair with Beth Guye representing the class as Queen. We assumed more responsibilities and revived THE SENATUS, the college yearbook which hadn’t been published for a number of years. Earl Lyons was elected Editor and the class was assured it would have a college yearbook. September, 1946. Thirty-four Seniors returned to grace the halls of “Ye Olde Alma Mater” with their bright and smiling faces. Our final year was successfully led by James Talbot, President; Rudyard Goode, Vice President; Fern Biser, Secretary- Treasurer; and ‘Tom Mero, Student Council Representative. Elwyn Burke became the head of the Student Body and ushered us through a magnificent year of traditional activities. College sports were renewed and the dignified seniors became the “rah! rah! kids” they had always longed to be. Emerging from a festive commencement week, tired but jubilant, we realized that college days are happy ones, Senatus 26 WHO’S WHO AMONG STUDENTS In American Universities and Colleges Name FERN Hope BISER ELWYN REED BURKE ELIZABETH ANN HARPER EaRL KENNETH LYONS ‘THOMAS FocH MERO JAMES BARTLETT ‘TALBOT JOHN PETER GROCKI Guy BAYARD RICHARDS, Jr. GENE ORR VALENTINE VIRGINIA LEE MYERS Class Senior Senior Senior Senior Senior Senior Junior Senior Senior Senior Major Business Administration English English Physical Education Mathematics Social Studies Physical Education Commerce Chemistry Psychology Senatus 27 Minor English Social Studies Chemistry Biol. This was the largest freshman class since the beginning of the war. These students found a rough road ahead of them with many stop signs, curves, and detours. In order that the road would seem easier, the class chose Stanley Wilmoth as their leader. The war became very real to us as we watched many of our classmates leave the campus to wear Uncle Sam’s colors. The highlight of the freshman year was a party given at Graceland Hall. The purpose of this party was to stimulate friendship among the class. As another September dawned, the class turned off on a smooth, white high- way. Robert Ward was chosen to steer the class during its gay sophomore ride. A successful and entertaining dance was given at the Social Club for the student body. In the fall of 1946 we welcomed back the boys who had served in World War II. We have planned several social activities which we hope to carry out in the near future. As juniors and privileged upperclassmen, and with Dean With- row in the chair as our guide, we are looking forward to a bigger and better senior year. Our “ego” would suffer tremendously if we were to remain complaisant about this undesirable situation for there must be a way to improve our collegiate status and at the same time save our honor. It would be foolhardy to look towards our superiors for moral support, so by adapting the old army game of “passing the buck” to a seemingly hopeless task, we arrive at a solution that is a little better than plausible. By reasoning we find that it is given that a sophomore is a wise fool and by swallowing our pride we accept this axiom. By asking the question, “if a soph- Senatus 34 Sophomore Class History omore is a wise fool what then would the status of the lowly freshman be?” By examination of the facts, we find that a freshman is not wise for that is a char- acteristic of his superiors. He is not a wise fool for we as sophomores have accepted this definition. By the process of elimination we have arrived at an answer to the problem and we find that a freshman is simply a “fool” with no helpful adjectives to help him along in his year of distress. Mr. Paul Jones was our leader through our trial year or that year of “‘foolery.” Our second year or the year in which we brand ourselves in the class known as “wise fools,” we find our leaders to be: President, Edward Woicik; Vice-President, Howard Collett; Secretary, Carl Wellman; Treasurer, Bill DeMartini. STUBBLEFIELD Senatus Staff The SENATUS STAFF presents the book of the year. We are the first since World War II, to have shared in this honor. Like our forebears, we have delved deep into the grounds of effort; sowed the admixtured seeds of creative enthusiasm, writers’ cramp and ultimate despair; nourished the straggling sprouts with midnight oil; but at long last, with an efficacious serum known only to ourselves, we rejoice in submitting the hardy perennial. One learns by doing. One learns—that contracts are deemed necessary by good business men, like ourselves?—that the rising cost of PRINTING, to use a blanket term, is in direct proportion to the diminishing quality of SENATUS’ assets—that in the world of priorities, SENA TUS, Inc., is a non-essential industry: to speak clearly, a liability! One learns, too, that a certain friend, included upon our only too gracious staff, his qualities, neither we nor our patrons will forget—thanks Charlie Duke— that Tom Mero is a shrewd tyrant who clips the printer’s estimate to fit the SENATUS budget; what a budget?-—that June Viquesney and Betty Harper have won the wars with the organizations, with Freddy Harman’s optimism, an only too ready perpetual source of ammunition. Perhaps one wonders about the quality of work which might emerge, if students devote to their academic pursuits, the same degree of concentrated effort that our staff and faculty advisers havé exerted in sharing this volume with their student colleagues. A cynic contributor: “The teaching profession would be ex- tinct, undergraduates would retire themselves with a Ph.D.—namely ‘Kilroy’.” But in a serious vein—SENATUS is the voice of college. Let it speak to you. In its margin tuck your autographs. In its pictured scenes, visualize your activities. Find your part in it—for it is your story. Finally, let it call you back—for Home- comings, for Alumni Days; bring it with you; let it keep you with us—for it is your Book, It is our gift—To You. ‘TheEditor, Senatus 41 “Senator” Your college newspaper, the “Senator,” has become a vital organ to further the American ideal of free speech on our college campus. The staff and faculty adviser, Mrs. Louise Pease, are earnestly and sincerely attempting to bring to the D E student news of an educational and social nature —news of the greatest value to the individual, where truth lies at the foundation. We are extremely proud to say that, of recent date, the “Senator” has become a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Press Associatio n, accomplished solely as a result of the combined efforts and interest of each staff member. It shall be our sincere aim, now and in the future, to endeavor to present the truth in our writings, without prejudice, and to thus maintain a “straight-from- the-shoulder” policy. ‘The Editor, IRVING STEIN Senatus 42 Alpha Psi Omega ‘The Iota Chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, National Honorary Dramatic Fra- ternity, was organized on the campus two years ago. Membership in the Fraternity is by the point system. Students must have been members in the Playcrafters and have taken part in at least three major plays or four one-act plays. The Alpha Psi Omega is one of the largest and best known drama fraternities in this country. There are chapters in almost all the larger universities and col- leges. ‘he aim of the organization is to keep a high standard in the field of drama and to stimulate interest in the Department of Fine Arts on the campus. The first production of the group was “Night Must Fall,” which was given last season. ‘The first play of this season was “Death ‘Takes a Holiday” followed by two other productions. FRANK STUBBLEFIELD Senatus 43 Beta Alpha Beta The Beta Alpha Beta is an honorary commercial fraternity. Candidates must have achieved the high scholastic requirements in their chosen fields of Commerce or Business Administration for election to membership. The aims of the organ- ization are to acquaint its members with the current trends of the changing business world, to promote and stimulate their interest in commerce, and to organize the commercial students into one social group with a common interest. One of the means by which the Beta Alpha Beta strives to accomplish its purpose is the study and observation of various business establishments in order to gain first hand knowledge of commercial methods and procedures. ‘The out- standing academic goal of the fraternity each year is the winning of Na tional Awards for commercial students. The Beta Alpha Beta is also active in the social life of the campus. The fraternity has had numerous activities during the current year, among which were the traditional Annual Pledge Dinner, the Christmas Party, and the Valentine Dance. As members of this organization, we believe that we can attain higher academic standards and better fit ourselves to take our places in the commercial business world. Until 1945-1946, the College held two chapters, Zeta Chapter organized in 1925 for men, and the Delta Sigma Chapter organized in 1937 for women. However, in April, 1946, the two chapters merged to form the Zeta Chapter. The object of this organization is to promote interest in science by keeping up with current scientific investigation, by means of lectures by prominent scien- tists, by means of papers prepared by regular members, and by means of general discussion. Membership in this fraternity is open to those science majors whose academic work and scientific attitude conform to the standards of the chapter. The old fraternity colors of purple and gold were, on that day, replaced by cherry and grey. The fraternity was founded in 1915 by Roscoe Gould, William J. Flint, C. A. Rhinehart, and D. S. Fleming. During the years, 1917-1919 and 1943-1944, there were no meetings held, due to enlistment of members in the armed forces. The fraternity has grown and progressed rapidly. It boasts a chapter house on the campus, to which a new wing will be added in the near future. This new wing will provide sleeping quarters for out-of-town members. The fraternity has many outstanding social events each year. Among these are: the Spring Formal, a Mid-year Ball, and a Barn Dance. The insignia of TKE is a skull and crossbone, superimposed on an equilateral triangle, with an argent at the base of the triangle, upon which are the letters “TPKE.” It is made of Roman Gold and is adorned with three white pearls. Weekly meetings are held, as well as a large number of other well planned events. OFFICERS THOMAS EMER O Wise pact ec one eee a Prytanis DBA Nat WILCEER © Wis os tect an ere ee re. Until 1940, when the Fairmont State Teachers College chapter came to Elkins and formally installed the Delta Chapter, the organization had been known as the TVC. The former name, TVC, stood for the words: Truth, Valor, and Courage. These, too, are the basis upon which the members of the Zeta Sigma laid the groundwork for their new organization. These ideals have caused the organization to grow into one of the largest, and most politically powerful groups on the campus. This organization gives four of the social highlights of the year. Namely: The Football Hop, usually given in October; Holiday Dance, just before the Christmas holidays; the Bohemian Ball, well known and much anticipated affair of the spring; lastly, the Spring Formal, sometimes given jointly with their sister sorority, the Phi Chi. The two main projects of the year were: the printing and distributing of the first Blue Book, which contains the home and school addresses of all students and faculty on the campus; and the other project is the converting of the old campus carriage house into their first fraternity house. MILLER Senatus 47 SE TD TTT a Iota Nu Delta Fraternity Last fall, Davis and Elkins College welcomed the Iota Nu Delta Fraternity to the campus. ‘Their short but interesting history goes back to April, 1945. On the college softball field, the fraternity was molded together and showed its first sign of life. Here in an atmosphere of friendliness and cooperation, the seed of life was sown for the organization, which was first known as the Inde- pendent Softball ‘Team. The boys, not content with the possibility of being divided into other existing fraternal orders, and receiving the full encouragement of the faculty, decided to form their own fraternity. Meetings were held, a constitution was drawn up, committees were formed, and new members were inducted, thereby forming a solid foundation for the fraternity. On September 16, 1946, the fraternity was recognized by the Pan-Hellenic Council and assumed an active role in college activities this year. ‘The members of the fraternity asked Dr. Noblin to act as faculty adviser. Dr. Noblin received the invitation and accepted it, thus completing the final and important step in the organization of the Iota Nu Delta Fraternity. The nurturing of this rapidly growing child was begun by twelve chartered members, two of which are not in Davis and Elkins this year. The constitution and charter members were approved by the Pan-Hellenic Council. ‘The Iota Chi Delta has chosen as its colors, blue and white, and its flower, the white gardenia. Other emblems are yet to be chosen. The original officers of the sorority unanimously accepted again for this year are: Lois Walker, President; Louise Hanson, Vice-President; Ethelyn Smith, Secretary; Phyllis Daniels, Treasurer; Phyllis Shirkey, Historian; and Muriel Lipchick, Pan-Hellenic Representative. Mrs. Clark Fidler, charming sponsor of Tota Chi Delta, has entertained the girls with teas and social gatherings. Patronesses are Mrs. Paul Snedegar, Mrs. J. A. Towler, Mrs. R. D. Earle, Mrs. Phil Harness, Mrs. Charles Leonard, Mrs. Ernest English, and Miss Martha B. Williams. Miss Carrie L. Brittain will efficiently perform the duties as our faculty adviser. Senatus 49 Phi Chi The Alpha Chapter of the Phi Chi Sorority, which was organized in 1922, has been outstanding in the promotion of cultural and social activities on the campus of Davis and Elkins College. Each year this organization strives to better its preceding activities and this year was, by all means, not a failure in this respect. ‘The Phi Chi social season starts officially with Rush Week, a series of gala activities which take place in November. One of the most impressive functions of the year is the annual formal initiation dinner at which time the new members are formally initiated into the sorority. This group presents each new member with a bracelet bearing the Sorority Seal. ‘The Sorority shows appreciation to the alumni and _ patronesses annually by entertaining at the Alumni and Patronesses Tea, which takes place in March, and the Past Presidents’ Dinner, which takes place in April. Among other activities are the Spring Formal, held annually in May, and the Graduation Picnic. These activities close the Sorority social calendar for the school. Being founded on January 24, 1920, makes it the oldest sorority ‘‘on the hill.” The sorority climaxes its social activities of the year with a gay Spring Formal in May. This event is preceded by a festive Rush Week in the early fall, honoring new students into the group, the Alumnae Christmas Party, the New Year Pledge Party, Hell Week in February, the Founder’s Day Dinner, and the Patroness Tea. Commencement week is an active one for the graduating members, for a picnic, formal dance, and a breakfast are given in their honor. Phi Sigma Theta has many cherished traditions. Each new member is given a mother-of-pearl pendant bearing the sorority crest in gold, and a rush book of gray leather bound with coral cord. A silver spoon is presented to the first-born of each alumnae and patroness. Each graduating member of the sorority is given a gift of her own choosing; and a collection of books costing not less than fifteen dollars is presented to the College Library every year. The council consists of two representatives from each fraternity and sorority, the president of the Student Body, the faculty adviser of each group, and the Dean of the College. The purpose of the council is to maintain, on a high plane, fraternity life and interfraternity relationship. They cooperate with the college authorities in their effort to maintain high social, ethical and scholastic standards throughout the whole college besides acting as a forum for the discussion of questions of interest to the college and the fraternity-sorority world. The officers of the group are: President, Elwyn Burke, Student Body Presi- dent, who automatically becomes president of the council; and Secretary, Elizabeth Ann Harper. Senatus 52 Student Council The purpose of the Student Council is to regulate all matters pertaining to student life at Davis and Elkins which do not fall under the jurisdiction of the faculty; to encourage active cooperation in the work of student government; to uphold the highest standards of honor and integrity in all matters of personal conduct; to strengthen cordial relations between the faculty and students; to enact and enforce laws according to the grant of powers; and to constitute a medium for expressing student opinion on matters of general college interest. It is the duty of the Student Council to act as an executive body for the Student Body, as a whole, and it is the Council’s aim to put the College first; the individual second; and the organization third. The Council consists of members as follows: The President, First and Second Vice-Presidents, and the Secretary-Treasurer of the Student Body, one member from each of the three upper classes, the president of the freshman class, he to be a full member after the first semester of the school year, and a representative of the Pan-Hellenic Council. ‘The Student Council meets the first Monday in every month. Created at a dinner at Halliehurst Hall, under the sponsorship of Miss Carrie Lanier Brittain, the club proposed to stimulate broader reading interests among students, and to promote a common understanding and interpretation of the best literature. Meetings of the Book Club are held bi-monthly, on the first and third Fri- days of each month, the former a business meeting, and the latter a social meeting, held at the home of one of the sponsors. Included in the social meeting is the review of books by members of the club, or guests, followed with an informal discussion by the club members and the sponsors. ‘The sponsors are the mesdames Charles Albert, Carl Channel, R. At the Commencement Exercises in 1944, the club was awarded the Plaque of Progress, which is given by the college to that organization which has con- tributed most to the life on the campus during the year. Each year, IRC sends delegates to the Ohio Valley Regional Conferences of International Relations Clubs, which are held on campuses throughout the states of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. Then in the fall of 1944, under the guiding influence of Alma Crosier and Wallace Gibbs, the association gained headway and became one of the most active clubs on the campus. Much was accomplished. A constitution and a pledge were written, and the way was opened to complete success. The purpose of the group was clearly defined in the constitution; it was to promote Christian ideals on the campus of a Christ- ian college. ‘he doors were opened to any persons who wanted to join that had good Christian character and Christian beliefs. | One of the first things done was to establish the Wednesday evening vesper services. ‘hese services are now held in a beautiful chapel in Graceland Hall. ‘There are many other things done each year that are sponsored by the SCA. Among them are the gathering of a Christmas basket for the needy, Religious Emphasis Week, inspirational services, and sponsoring a chapel program during the year. , OFFICERS PieSid Ci tae ares haey ets a Ae ees trae econ in, DOYLE KESTER VACCHRICSIGCTU tpn ete etre AR ie a ete WILLIAM INGRAM SCONCLON Verret up ter cet en eee stone eth cet teat eee GLORIA WALTHER LETC OSALT CT. eign mene cesar tee GAYNELLE CROSIER LROCURIIS). Money, for these sweaters, is raised by the club, through the media of social events, and concessions at football and basketball games. The club was organized in January, 1936, by Coach Shelton and that year’s letter men, following the procedure that has become prominent throughout col- leges and universities. Functioning as a social organization it did gain prominence among students of the College and Civic Clubs of this vicinity. “Hal McIntyre and his Orchestra” was sponsored by the Veteran’s Club on April 17, 1946 at the American Legion Hall in Elkins. This was the first “big name” band to appear in Elkins since the last Forest Festival. The Veteran’s Club went on inactive status on May 24, 1946, with good standing and remained inactive until the beginning of the 1946-47 school term, when it resumed its aims and activities. Their chief aim is to promote the welfare of all veterans attending Davis and Elkins College and to aid in their problems of readjustment. During the past two years, the W.A.A. has sponsored the annual May Day Festivities which they revived during the academic year, 1944-45, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Claire Fiorentino, the Association’s faculty adviser. ‘The May Day Festival is a very picturesque affair, held on the front lawn of Halliehurst Hall, where the queen of the campus is crowned and accompanied by her court com- posed of princesses fr om neighboring schools. One of the last year’s most profitable activities of the W.A.A. was their own original “Tag Day.” This was a day set aside to raise financial funds for the purpose of reopening the Bowling Alley on the campus. It proved to. be a big success and every member of the Association participated with great enthusiasm. Senatus 61 Chapel Choir Each ‘Thursday at 11:00 A.M. we note the weekly pilgrimage to the west end of the Davis and Elkins campus where is located the Presbyterian Church. This weekly chapel is held to give stimulation to the religious aspect of our college life. Davis and Elkins College realizes that the attainment of its ideals is dependent upon the nurturing of the religious life of its students, and is convinced that in- tellectual development without moral and spiritual growth represents a grave and present threat to individuals and to society. The Chapel Choir represents a cross-section of the student body of Davis and Elkins College—students of all faiths gather together in reverence through voice to God. Senatus 62 BACCALAUREATE COMMENCEMENT Senatus 63 The May Fete Each spring Halliehurst Hall is the setting for the May Day program of the college. In the afternoon the smooth, green lawn is the background for a colorful and beautiful coronation. Opening the ceremony is the traditional Daisy Chain dance, performed by a group of the most popular girls on the campus, to an accompaniment of well-loved music. Small girls usher in and scatter flowers before the Queen and her court. Leading the court are the escorts to the Queen and her ladies. The president of the college, who officiates at the coronation, appears next and is followed by flower girls and the maids of honor. The small crown bearer precedes the lovely white-gowned Queen who is attended by her train bearers. After the Queen is crowned, she receives the Log Book from the last year’s queen. The Log Book, a tradition established by the Women’s Athletic Associa- tion, is a valued record of the coronation and is signed by all the members of the court, the principals of the coronation, and the dance groups. Dances are presented by the physical fitness classes, and musical selections are given by guest artists. Davis and Elkins welcomes the maids of honor and the princesses from neigh- boring colleges and high schools to the day’s festivities, including the receptions after the coronation which is attended by many parents and friends. Luncheon at noon and supper in evening is for the Queen’s court. The Queen’s Ball brings to a close the May Day program. Senatus 64 May Fete - 1946 The eleventh Queen of the May at Davis and Elkins was Elizabeth Guye Kittle who reigned during 1946. The Queen’s escort was James McGee, who was chosen by the student body. Maids of Honor were June Stewart, Alderson-Broaddus; Jean Vaughn, West Virginia Wesleyan. Last year’s Queen, who presented the Log Book, was Izetta McQuain Lyons. Coach Rooker brings to Davis and Elkins College Campus the advantages of 12 years of previous coaching experience, which included both high school and college sports. Coach Rooker came to the Senators from Lancaster High School in Pennsylvania in the fall of ’42, and immediately took over the duties of head football and basketball coach. He assumed the head of the physical training department at this time also, which included among all the other duties, that of being physical education director to the U. S. Army Cadets. At the end of the cadet training here at Davis and Elkins College, Coach Rooker enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Senior Grade, and returned to the Davis and Elkins College Campus in February, 1946 and resumed all of his former duties. Coach Harvey Rooker gives to the college campus the assets of a fine coach and an ex- perienced teacher. Saul Kampf, a former Davis and Elkins College student and athlete, is Coach Rooker’s assistant in all phases of the athletic department. FOOTBALL - 1946 With the turning of the leaves in Aug- ust, we saw the first preparation being made for athletics since 1942. The first call for football produced 75 willing and capable men. The first few weeks under the hot West Virginia sun narrowed the Senator squad down to 42 fine prospects. However, the Senators were graced with but two former college players, Keith Skidmore and “Chuck” Rymniak. This did not, however, daunt the courage of the maroon and white | as they rolled over the first three adversaries | with comparative ease. | Coach Rooker, realizing that he had all | newcomers to college football, stressed fun- damentals, and being that the majority of his squad were freshmen, he coached with the future in mind; this can be seen in the fact that many of the first team were com- COACH ROOKER posed of freshmen. The maroon and white faced a tough Moravian College eleven on October 11, and battled to a 0—0 tie; the Senators repeated this performance with a 0—0 tie with Glenville State on November 9 at Glenville. The remainder of the college grid games for the ’46 season ended with Davis and Elkins on the short end of the count. The outstanding material with which the Senators molded their squad in- cluded such local talent as Bob Irwin, 175 lb. guard, who was picked on the Ist team | All-State Conference; Keith Skidmore, hard hitting halfback; Ernie Bazzle, fine aggres- sive end; Ed White, guard; Red Rhodes, star performer at fullback; Don Kelley, tall rangy end; and George Sprecher, guard. The 1946 conclusion of football on the Davis and Elkins College Campus left more than one fan with the firm opinion that the future 1947 Senator squad will prob- ably have some of the finest material avail- able in the West Virginia Conference, and that this year’s season was but a stepping and learning stone toward the winning of the West Virginia Conference Champion- ship by the maroon and white in 1947. ASS’T. COACH KAMPF Senatus 70 OUTLOOK ON THE ’46-’47 Davis and Elkins Basketball Squad This court season the personable Rooker who coached the Senator grid squad to a successful season when he had a complete freshman aggregation to work with, is not expecting too much from his men right off but prefers to let the boys get some more experience before actually predicting their future. The possibilities are good but anything can happen in the West Virginia Athletic Conference . . . without a doubt the wildest and woolliest basketball league in the nation. Rooker returned from the Navy last February and did not have much time to work with his team. However, the Senators are already showing the fine influence of the sagacious Rooker who has put them thru their paces sparing no effort to turn out a well-coached group. The 24-game schedule is loaded with dynamite from start to finish but given a fair percentage of the breaks, few injuries, and valuable experience from his untried hands the Senators should do well enough to deserve the plaudits of the crowd. 9 0- 1.947 DAVIS AND ELKINS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponents Place December 16 Waynesburg College Waynesburg, Pa.
