Davis, who, as Commanding'Officer of the USS WALKE QDD-723j, bravely gave his life in a victorious duel with four Japanese Kamikaze Aircraft. Since its first commission in 1957, DAVIS has led a full and widely travelled existence. In the course of seven Mediterranean deployments, three Western Pacific tours, one South American deployment, two Middle East deploy- ments, one Great Lakes cruise, and numerous Atlantic and Caribbean operations, the ship has earned numerous awards, including the Battle Efficiency E , two Meritorious Unit Citations, the Communications Green C , and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. The USS DAVIS and her crews have always proved ready to respond quickly whatever the mission. It has been on station during numerous crisis situations since its first test in the Cuban Blockade of 1962. DAVIS was again in the Caribbean in 1965 during the Dominican Republic troubles and was steaming in the Mediterranean in 1967 when the Arab-Israeli War broke out. The ship went into combat for the first time in 1966 during her first WESTPAC cruise in the waters off Vietnam. She repeated this journey twice more in the next six years. Despite heavy operational commitments, DAVIS has had the opportunity to take part in exciting tasks like the 1963 recovery operation for Astronaut Gordon Cooper. DAVIS has also visited many fascinat- ing ports on six continents. ASW sensors and weapons systems were added to the already considerable Naval Gunfire Support capabilities. Since the remodernization, DAVIS has proven her worth in the ASW and NGFS areas during a 1972 Vietnam deployment and a 1974 Mediterranean cruise. These cruises resulted in a Meritorious Unit Citation for Vietnam and the ASW AH Award for her excellence in the Mediterranean mission. USS DAVIS completed a comprehensive overhaul at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1975. Following refresher training in the Spring of 1976, DAVIS participated in UNITAS XVII, an annual operation with the navies of South America. In 1977, DAVIS was deployed to the Middle East for six months. In 1978, DAVIS was selected to participate in the 1978 Great Lakes Cruise. This was the first time that U.S. Naval ships had visited many of the Great Lakes ports. The main purpose of the Great Lakes Cruise was to aid the local Navy Recruiters. The cruise was a complete success and DAVIS' contributions will affect recruiting in the area for years to come. In 1979, DAVIS was assigned to a Mediterranean deployment. During this deploy- ment DAVIS received special tasking to operate in the Middle East. This special tasking resulted in DAVIS coming under the operational control of four operational commanders during a two month period, and DAVIS was awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal for operations in the Indian Ocean under the operational control of commander SEVENTH Fieet. V USS DAVIS started a 16 month overhaul in the Charleston Naval Shipyard in September 1979. Upon completion DAVIS went through the strenuous five weeks of refresher training in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and then in August 1981 was underway again for the Med and I.O.
