They are directly responsible for the ship's steam plant which provides the ability to get underway. In addition, BT's are responsible for the refueling and defueling of the ship and the difficult and critical task of maintaining the water used for the ship's boilers at the required limits. BT's operate and maintain the ship's four 1200 PSI boilers and their related machinery including fuel oil pumps, forced draft blowers, and feed water pumps. This equipment produces high tempera- ture high pressure steam for the ship's main turbines and generators. In addition, auxiliary steam is produced for other services including the galley and hotel services. During this Med-Mideast deployment the ship's boilers and associated machinery per- formed exceptionally well due mainly to the hard work and alert watch standing of these men. Work in the Pit Qfireroomj is long and hard with temperatures of 125 degrees and above being the rule rather than the exception.
