UF FREEDUM-2 ll HISTORY OF USS DAVIS CDD-9375 The USS DAVIS QDD-9371 was commis- sioned on 6 March 1957, bearing the name of World War II hero, Commander George F. Davis, who, as Commanding'Officer of the USS WALKE QDD-723j, bravely gave his life in a victorious duel with four Japanese Kamikaze Aircraft. Since its first commission in 1957, DAVIS has led a full and widely travelled existence. In the course of seven Mediterranean deployments, three Western Pacific tours, one South American deployment, two Middle East deploy- ments, one Great Lakes cruise, and numerous Atlantic and Caribbean operations, the ship has earned numerous awards, including the Battle Efficiency E , two Meritorious Unit Citations, the Communications Green C , and the Navy Expeditionary Medal. The USS DAVIS and her crews have always proved ready to respond quickly whatever the mission. It has been on station during numerous crisis situations since its first test in the Cuban Blockade of 1962. DAVIS was again in the Caribbean in 1965 during the Dominican Republic troubles and was steaming in the Mediterranean in 1967 when the Arab-Israeli War broke out. The ship went into combat for the first time in 1966 during her first WESTPAC cruise in the waters off Vietnam. She repeated this journey twice more in the next six years. Despite heavy operational commitments, DAVIS has had the opportunity to take part in exciting tasks like the 1963 recovery operation for Astronaut Gordon Cooper. DAVIS has also visited many fascinat- ing ports on six continents. In 1970, DAVIS was decommissioned to undergo a remodernization program aimed at improving her anti-submarine warfare capabili- ties in the decade of theseventies. The ship was rebuilt from the main deck up and the latest I .:uf4.. ...i:n-urnrouvvdlm-.qv-ruw-...f ,Q M ..,f..,,,.-. gay . xg .lg I. ASW sensors and weapons systems were added to the already considerable Naval Gunfire Support capabilities. Since the remodernization, DAVIS has proven her worth in the ASW and NGFS areas during a 1972 Vietnam deployment and a 1974 Mediterranean cruise. These cruises resulted in a Meritorious Unit Citation for Vietnam and the ASW AH Award for her excellence in the Mediterranean mission. USS DAVIS completed a comprehensive overhaul at the Charleston Naval Shipyard in 1975. Following refresher training in the Spring of 1976, DAVIS participated in UNITAS XVII, an annual operation with the navies of South America. In 1977, DAVIS was deployed to the Middle East for six months. In 1978, DAVIS was selected to participate in the 1978 Great Lakes Cruise. This was the first time that U.S. Naval ships had visited many of the Great Lakes ports. The main purpose of the Great Lakes Cruise was to aid the local Navy Recruiters. The cruise was a complete success and DAVIS' contributions will affect recruiting in the area for years to come. In 1979, DAVIS was assigned to a Mediterranean deployment. During this deploy- ment DAVIS received special tasking to operate in the Middle East. This special tasking resulted in DAVIS coming under the operational control of four operational commanders during a two month period, and DAVIS was awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal for operations in the Indian Ocean under the operational control of commander SEVENTH Fieet. V USS DAVIS started a 16 month overhaul in the Charleston Naval Shipyard in September 1979. Upon completion DAVIS went through the strenuous five weeks of refresher training in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and then in August 1981 was underway again for the Med and I.O. - CDR. GEORGE F. DAVIS George Fleming Davis was born in Manila, Philippine Islands, on March 23, 1911. He attended school in Honolulu and entered the Naval Academy in 1930. Graduated and commissioned Ensign in 1934, he was assigned to the fitting-out of the USS TUSCALOOSA, a cruiser, and served aboard after commissioning as a junior officer. After serving aboard the USS BROOME and the USS HOPKINS from June 1939 until September 1941 he went to the battleship USS OKLAHOMA of the Pacific Fleet. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, OKLAHOMA was hit by four torpedoes from the first wave of attacking planes and capsized at her berth. In January 1942 he reported to the USS HONOLULU. He served in HONOLULU while she participated in the Aleutians Campaign in August, 1942, and later in actions in the South Pacific. Commander Davis was personally awarded THE MEDAL OF HONOR WINNER FOR WHOM THE DAVIS IS NAMED the Legion of Merit with Combat V and was entitled to the ribbon the Navy Unit Commenda- tion awarded to the HONOLULU . . . for outstanding heroism in action against enemy Japanese forces during the Battle of Tassafar- onga, November 30, 1942, the Battles of Kula July 5 and 13, 1943, and Leyte, September Gulf and Kolombangara, the operations at Palau 12 to October 20, 1944 On November 26, 1944, he assumed command of the destroyer USS WALKE. In command when she was attacked on January 6, 1945, by four Japanese Kamikaze planes prior to the invasion of the Lingayen Gulf, Commander Davis was seriously wounded. Not until he saw that the fires on his ship had been brought under control and the safety of his destroyer assured did he consent to be carried below where he died several hours later. Commander Davis was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Commanding Officer of the USS WALKE, engaged in a detached mission in support of minesweeping forces preparatory to the invasion of Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippine Islands, January 6, 1945. AWA 70z9M...L 0,412 Wr.9A....-'I Z A K f ff To the crew of the Davis, and their families and friends: This book is dedicated to the DAVIS crew and their families and friends. The Cruise Book , is a pictorial record of events and achievements during the 1981 deployment. On December 21 we returned to Charleston after a long and arduous deployment. We department Charleston basically untried and with an undetermined reputation. By the time Warship DAVIS returned to Charleston the men of DAVIS had proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that DAVIS was ready for any assignment and could always be depended on for timely and professional performance. This was a signal achievement given the long period since last deployment caused by an extended overhaul. The extended overhaul and long time between deployments combined to cause DAVIS to deploy with a lower than normal experience level. The men of DAVIS more than made up for lack of experience with hard work and enthusiasm. DAVIS outperformed virtually every destroyer she operated with in a wide variety of complex operations. During the deployment DAVIS was assigned to Commander Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, Commander Middle East Force in the Persian Gulf and Commander Carrier Battle Group Six in the Indian Ocean. On a multi-mission destroyer each man has to be ready and able to do a wide variety of tasks. DAVIS participated, often on very short notice, in Aircraft Carrier Battle Group Operations involving anti-submarine warfare, gunnery, underway replenishments, helicopter operation, search and rescue, small boat operations, electronic warfare and aircraft carrier plane guard duties. You can be sure that each crewmember proved himself a master of many skills. A successful destroyer requires a flexible and talented crew. The DAVIS crew proved more than up to the challenge. Our overall mission during all of the evolutions accomplished was Qand isj to be combat ready to protect the interests of the United States and her citizens. A free society such as the United States is dependent on peace and security. DAVIS' presence in the turbulent areas of the world noted was a factor in maintaining peace and order. You may be sure the mission DAVIS accomplished on this deployment was and is vitally important to all Americans. You men of DAVIS and your families should be justifiably proud of what you have done and should take satisfaction in accomplishing an extremely important task for our country in an Extraordinaire fashion. The sacrifice and hardship experienced by the DAVIS crew and their families associated with the deployment should be greatly appreciated by all Americans. I am proud to serve on Warship Extraordinaire with Sailors Extraordinaire. Sincerely, G. W. CIC on the DAVIS is known as the Bat Cave', or Cave of Mushrooms. This cave is dark, cool, and has the aroma of dead coffee and stale cigarette smoke. Within this cave of gloom lurks the creatures of the night who suffer from the sunlight deficiency syndrome. The fearless leader of these gnomes is called Chief Tazz. He is easily recognizable by his gleaming fangs and the anchors he wears on his cape. His hours are long, hard, and tedious with his only breaks being when he flies off to pump CHT tanks. The staff of Mushroomville is completely trained and performs tactical maneuvers in a language all their own. On a full moon night you can hear them chanting, Romeo one charlie this is juliet eight mike, be advised, nothing heard, say again, over. Their leading petty officer is Sgt. Rock who sits in the northeast corner and plays with cobwebbs. Other members include Mike the Sleeper, Al the Buffalo Molester , and Field Marshall Van. The rest of the mushrooms roam aimlessly about the cave for endless hours. They are not allowed out into the direct sunlight for fear they will get lost. 14 4 ' ' W 'WW ' '3k T ' mmhw r' Q Z? FIRST DIVISIO First Division is comprised of Boatswain's Mates and non-rated seamen. While underway they work long hours standing watches and performing deck evolutions. These evolutions include anchoring, mooring, receiving helos, and staging underway replenishments. In addition they perform maintenance and preservation on the main deck areas and operate and maintain the two ship's boats. Boatswain's Mates are the true sailors of the fleet in that both the jobs they do and the ceremonies they perform are steeped in tradition and have been performed in one way or another since man has been at sea. Their hours are long and often tedious. They work outside on the main decks in weather ranging from blistering heat to numbing cold. But their rewards are the successful completion of the exciting and sometimes dangerous evolutions of seamanship. During this deployment First Division distinguished themselves by winning the big race in the International Gonzo Regatta, held 'at Gonzo Station, Arabian Sea. Participating in the regatta were members of the aircraft carrier America battle group, and the Australian destroyer H.M.A.S. HOBARTH. They are directly responsible for the ship's steam plant which provides the ability to get underway. In addition, BT's are responsible for the refueling and defueling of the ship and the difficult and critical task of maintaining the water used for the ship's boilers at the required limits. BT's operate and maintain the ship's four 1200 PSI boilers and their related machinery including fuel oil pumps, forced draft blowers, and feed water pumps. This equipment produces high tempera- ture high pressure steam for the ship's main turbines and generators. In addition, auxiliary steam is produced for other services including the galley and hotel services. During this Med-Mideast deployment the ship's boilers and associated machinery per- formed exceptionally well due mainly to the hard work and alert watch standing of these men.
