Then on December 10th she arrived in Hodiedah, Yemen Arab Republic. MAIN STREET, HODIEDAH. AN OVERVIEW OF THE CITY. The visit was a purely diplomatic one. In the modern navy the cermonies are not too severe, although many pointlessly annoying deeds are done, and it is the custom for all of those individuals who have never crossed the equator at sea, polliwogs, to undergo initiation rites at the hands of those who have, the sons of Neptune or Shellbacks. The senior shellback member of the crew is customarily selected as Neptunus Rex, his first assistant is Davey Jones. On December 17 the Davis held crossing the linen ceremonies. In the days prior to the 17th, preliminary events occurred. A polliwog beauty contest took place and from amongst a wide assortment of alluring and sensuous candidates one polliwog was chosen as King Nep'tune's consort. The polliwogs revolted-and 'guerilla warfare was rife throughout the ship. On the night of the 16th, in accordance with custom, Davey Jones appeared on board with a message to the Captain from His Majesty, Neptunus Rex, stating at what time the royal party would come on board and the ceremonies begin.
