C ONAKRY GUINEA Followmg br1ef fuel stops rn Hamrlton Bermuda on Oct 22 Ponte Delgada Azores on Oct 28 and Dakar Senegal on Nov 1 the USS Dav1s made her f1rst port V1S1t at Conakry Lxumea Dav1s was rnport at Conakry from 2 4 Nov The V1S1t was the f1rst to Conakry by a U.S Naval sh1ps1nce Feb 1976 Davis vrsrt was largely a d1plomat1c and ceremomal one and l1berty was not expected to be partrcularly good Nevertheless They look good Mr Scott but w11l they f1ght'7 Welcome aboard to Commander Gurnean Navy Capitaine Mohamed Lamine Sako most crew members had an excellent ume as the sh1p arranged partres on the p1er and beach partres The Gurnean government extended an extremely warm welcome and crew members thoroughly enjoyed performances of the Airman Ballet and a day long tour of the Gurnean h1ll country Whrch the government prov1ded Dav1smen also competed W1th the Gurnean Nat1onal Basketball Team 1n a ser1es of games D1plomat1cally the V1S1t was a great success and Dav1smen left an extremely good 1mpress1on of the sh1p the U S Navy and the Unrted States Rendering honors to the Monument to the Gumean War Dead Two P0i11iS.

On 7 November USS Davis arrived in Lagos Nigeria for the second of the West African port visits Davismen found the Lagos sea detail a demanding one with strong currents heavy shipping traffic and an exhausting mooring operation The ship s boats were utilized extensively and , . . 9. . LAGGS, NIGERIA l boat crews put in long hours. Ashore the American community in Lagos was very hospitable. Davis sailors were entertained at the American Embassy's U.S. Marine House and the American Ambassador hosted a cocktail party for the entire crew at his residence. Crew members also had the opportunity to mix with their counterparts in the Nigerian Navy when the Nigerianshosted cocktail parties at their Officer's and Enlisted Men's clubs. The ship reciprocated with a reception for the local diplomatic community and ship's tours. On November 9 the Davis was underway again, northbound. Relaxing at the Ambassador's residence.
