sl -f a g If , y . USS DAV S CDD-9375 IDDLE EAST CRUIS 20 ocr. 77 - 2 MAY 78 To the Officers and Men of USS DAVIS CDD-9375, For six and one-half months we have shared an experience only those of us in the Sea Service can understand and appreciate. We have sailed new waters, visited remote lands and most importantly, accomplished all missions. We have done our job and done it well. We can and should take great pridevin ourselves and in DAVIS. I Think back to the beginning, back to September and October 1977, when we were conducting the OPPE and preparing for deployment. It was a most difficult time. Long hours every day, numerous inspections and doubt in some minds that DAVIS would deploy. But that's the time we became the crew we are. We did what had to be done, overcame the obstacles and on 20 October 1977 we left our wake on the Cooper River. We had become the DAVIS. Are you still remembering? We left our mark, our American Brand, as we steamed those thousands of miles to West Africa, the Mediterranean, Suez, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean, East Africa, Persian Gulf, and back across the Atlantic. Do you recall the names: Conakry, Lagos, Rota, Cagliari, the Canal, Aqaba, Djibouti, Hodieda, Mombasa, Muscat, Bahrain, J idda, the Azores and Bermuda? Will any of us forget Djibouti... 12 BSF's! Nor should we forget the swim calls, the Crossing the Line ceremonies, fantail fishing, the whale on the bow, the beer on the pier, the bagpiper, beach parties, deck cookouts, Las Vegas nights, St. Patrick's Day cocktails, and the great Aqaba Gig Race. We made our own fun because we had to. We spent seventy-eight percent of our time underway. Our liberty except in Mombasa, was very limited. We were heavily involved in supporting Commander, Middle East Force, RADM Samuel Packer, whose flagship we were for two months, in operations in the vicinity of the Horn of Africa. We suffered material casualties and repaired some. We were self-sustaining and we did all that was required and more. AS Captain, I am most grateful and extremely proud to be part of this- crew. Officially, you render honors by calling me, DAVIS. Now, I say to each of you who have shouldered the burdens of this cruise, who have stood the taut watches, who have been my shipmates .... You are DAVIS! A.B. FLANAGANAA. Commander, U.S. Navy Commanding Officer THE HISTGRY GF USS DAVIS QDD-9371 USS DAVIS was commissioned on 6 March 1957, bearing the name of World War II hero Commander George F. In March of 965, Daviswas sent to the Caribbean to patrol those waters during the Dominican crisis, and in the fall of 1965, the ship' received the Admiral Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy, symbolic of the most improved ship in the Atlantic Fleet in Battle Efficiency. 1 On 19 January 1966, Davis left Newport with DESRON 20 for SEVENTH Fleet duty. in the waters off the coast of Vietnam where she lived up to her fine reputation during rescue destroyer duty for aircraft carriers ',4' I ong' Naval Gunfire support missions. Three members of Davis crew were awarded the Republic of Vietnam's second highest decoration, the Cross of Gallantry. In 1966 Davis again won the Battle Efficiency E and the Operation and Engineering departmental f'E 's as well. On 2 May, 1967 Davis left Newport for a four and one half month deployment with the SIXTH fleet and during this deployment she was witness to the Arab-Israeli conflict in early June. . On 15 August 1968, Davis received three maj or awards, the Destroyer Squadron Twenty Battle Efficiency E , the Engineering E , and the Atlantic Fleet ASW Award. Then on 22 August 1968, Davis again departed Newport for extended operations with the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet in waters off North Vietnam. During this second WESTPAC deployment, Davis fired more than 1 1, 000 rounds ,of ammunition providing accurate and effective gunfire support for troops ashore. Davis also received hostile fire several times. Davis' performance earned her the Meritorious Unit Commendation. it Returning to Newport in April 1969, Davis spent the next 5 months participating in Anti-air, surface, and Anti-submarine warfare exercises in the Caribbean. She returned to Newport in early f etober. On 17 October, Davis departed Newport for Boston,Naval Shipyard whereshe was decommissioned on October 30, 1969 to undergo extensive modernization. After nearly one year in the yards, Davis was recommissioned on 17 October 1970 and outfitted for ASW capability with the installation of the latest ASW. weapons, including ASROC and improved sensors which greatly enhanced Davis' effectiveness against todayis high speed submarines. Since the modernization, Davis has proved her worth in ASW and NGFS during a 1972 Vietnam deployment and a 1974 Mediterranean Cruise. This resulted in a Meritorious Unit Citation for Vietnam and the ASW KA Award for excellence in that mission area during 1974. A The USS DAVIS entered the Charleston Naval Shipyard in early 1975 for another comprehensive overhaul. Then in January 1976, Davis left Charleston for extensive training in the areas of ASW and gunfire support to train personnel for the upcoming South American cruise. After three months of training in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Davis left Charleston, South Carolina on 10 July for a five and one half month cruise to South America which involved the circumnavigation of the South American continent, commencing and concluding in Puerto Rico. UNITAS XVII consisted of combined operations with the Navies and Air Forces of Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Columbia. After a total of over 320 individual exercises and over 24,000 miles in total distance steamed, Davis returned to Charleston on 23 November 1976. In January 1977, Davis left Charleston for exercises in the Caribbean with NATO Forces including Canada, France, Sweden, Germany, England and Portugual. During this time the Davis relieved USS Sellers CDDG llj and assumed her duties as a member of the ,Middle East Force. The ship was inspected by RADM Samuel Packer, USN, Commander Middle East Force, and members of his staff, and made an outstanding impression. Although the ship's schedule was a busy one many crew members found time to enjoy liberty ashore in Aqaba or to go on a tour of the ancient city of Petra. A cocktail party and a dinner were hosted for the Davis Wardro om by local Jordanians. The ship, in turn, provided tours for Jordanian military personnel. On December 1, USS Davis got underway and headed south into her new operation areas in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. .1 MY CAMEUS BETTER THAN YQUR CAMEL. PETRA TOURISTS ASSEMBLE FOR THE JOURNEY. X . HELL'S ANGELS, HODIEDAH CHAPTER. , CROSSING THE LINE For you 'must-know that any craft wh0'd fain cross the greaz Sea Lora s special domain must pay the tribute thai?-'King Neptune wishes ana' be received by rnermaids, bears, and Hshes. We will see you on the morn, ana' any who resistiwill wish he had not been born. So goes a segment of 'the crossing the linel' ritual of the royal navy.The-boisterous .Gere emoniers of g crossing the line are so ancient that their derivation is L lost. In the modern navy the cermonies are not too severe, although many pointlessly annoying deeds are done, and it is the custom for all of those individuals who have never crossed the equator at sea, polliwogs, to undergo initiation rites at the hands of those who have, the sons of Neptune or Shellbacks. The senior shellback member of the crew is customarily selected as Neptunus Rex, his first assistant is Davey Jones. On December 17 the Davis held crossing the linen ceremonies. In the days prior to the 17th, preliminary events occurred. A polliwog beauty contest took place and from amongst a wide assortment of alluring and sensuous candidates one polliwog was chosen as King Nep'tune's consort. The polliwogs revolted-and 'guerilla warfare was rife throughout the ship. On the night of the 16th, in accordance with custom, Davey Jones appeared on board with a message to the Captain from His Majesty, Neptunus Rex, stating at what time the royal party would come on board and the ceremonies begin. The 'fbllowing day, the 17th, was one that all Polliwogs would remember. THE CONCRETE COWBOY, MASTER OF CEREMONIES. WOMEN ON THE HIGH SEAS MAKE THEIR BID. p A LITTLE TUNE FOR ALL THE BOYS. A i ffm. 2 B This book has been a collective effort. A number of people have aided in its preparation and deserve to be recognized for their efforts. A First I would like to thank FTG3 JERRY DUHON and OS3 BOBBY BURBANK for their work on the cruise book staff. PNSN JOE ELKINS and PC3 STEPHEN BYINGTON were also workhorses in this area. Between them they typed most of the manuscript for this book and Joe also headed the layout committee. They hung in there and Worked when all the rest of us were flagging. Thanks are also due to PHAN STEPHEN ANDERSON. PHAN took most of the photographs contained in this book and handled a lot of other odd jobs that popped up during its production. He was a great asset and the book Wouldn't exist in its present form without his work. While I'm on the subject of photographs I would also like to recognize the men who contributed photos to the book: SN ANTHONY BARBIERI, SKSN CURTIS DAVIS, MA1 DEMETRIO FILARDI, SA ANTHONY GREENHALGH, FTGSN JOHN GUZZO, HT2 DAVID KING, GMG2 ROY MACKENZIE, HTFN J EFF ERY PORTER, HM3 ALLEN RICE, FTG2 RITCHIE ROUSSEY, QM3 MARTY SANFORD, TMSN GARY SLEEMAN, SN GARY THOMAS EM3 JOHN WALSH and HTFN TIMOTHY WILMATH .Most of the color photography in this book is the result of their contributions Finally we all owe a debt of gratitude to GMGl MICHAEL MCGUIRE who headed the fund raising committee for this book Rapid F ire did some big talking about how much money he could raise and then went out and made every Word of it come true Thanks to his efforts this book was paid for before It even Went to press The Middle East cruise 1S never a picnic and Davis had it tougher than most Nevertheless we handled it and this book is a small record of that accomplishment In the years to come when you look back over some of the places you ve been and the experiences you ve had I hope that this book will help you to remember Where you were and what you did in the winter of 1977 78 Oflfv fjfwffvm 7 87 3 7 THE EDITOR ' ff D D DX o It ff xN vy ' D rm 7 ly mf 'K Xl fi 4 I A xN -N... ff Q i' X ff G 'X W T IA vw : xxxxXXxsS'.. 88 - Q ., 1 X, 21--3 t 5 ' , ii ,J 1f',CL'g3gi-H1 'X A ' l jix 'XS' ' is -1 ,ji q I p - K' 'T 's I f -xffkf L., ,
