S VIS IDD 93 72 qw . USS DA VIS KDD 9372 was commissioned on 6 March 1957 bearing the name of World War II hero Commander George F. DAVIS who, as Commanding Officer on the USS WALKE IDD 72.39, bravely gave his life in a victorious duel with four japanese Kamikaze aircraft. Her crew of 18 officers and 290 men operate a ship whose primary capabilities lie in anti-submarine warfare and surface gunnery including Naval Gunfire Support. In the latter category she still qualifies as the best platform in the Fleet. Among DA VIS' honors over the years are the ARLEIGH BURKE Fleet Trophy in 1965, the Atlantic Fleet ASW Award in 1968, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation in 1969 and again in 1972. Additionally, individual awards earned by members of the ship's company include Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Crosses of Gallantry, and numerous Navy Commendation Medals. DAVIS, a unit of DESTROYER SQUADRON TWENTK arrived in her new homeport of Charleston, South Carolina in July 1974 after completing a Mediterranean deployment. She entered Charleston Naval Shipyard in January 1975 for an eleven month overhaul in preparation for deployment on UNITAS XVII in july 1976
