These men provide the expertise and manpower for all deck and seamanship evolutions such as refueling, rearming, replenishing, anchoring, mooring, towing, and handling the ships two boats. They are responsible for keeping the ship clean, painted, and free of rust. These men enabled the ship to fire more than 8000 rounds in support of the South Vietnamese efforts. The Gunners Mates man and maintain two 5 !54 rapid fire guns. These guns together can fire 80 rounds per minute at a range of nearly 15 miles. The Fire Control Technicians are responsible for the ships MK56 and MK68 fire control systems. This complex equip- ment enables DAVIS to lock on an enemy aircraft up to 25 miles away - even if the aircraft is travelling up to 2000 miles per hour. Small arms also come under second divisions cognizance and many of its men are members of the ships landing party.
