THIRD DIVISIQN Third Division is made up of ASFIOC Gunners Mates, Sonar Technicians, and Torpedomen. These men are responsible for the manning and maintenance of the Antisubmarine Warfare Equip- ment aboard DAVIS - Sonar, ASROC and Torpedoes. Should the ship encounter an enemy submarine the Sonarmen would detect and track it using sonar. Once the submarine is discovered, the ship is maneuvered to enable the ASFIOC Gunners Mates and Torpedomen to attack it. DAVIS' primary underwater weapon is the long distance homing torpedo fired from pneumatic tubes or as the warhead on a rocket known as ASROC. These weapons combined with the ship's great speed and maneuverability make DAVIS an outstanding ASW ship. While in Vietnamese waters Third Division helped man the Ship's gunmounts, magazines, 50 cal. machine guns, and the Fire Control Directors in addition to carrying out their regular duties.
