Willis, “Just a gigolo.” Oink, oink!!! 34 Miss Piggy, eat your heart out! Excuse me! AFS FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT Selwyn and his U.S. Family! (Left to Right) Selwyn Devroc, Bob Taylor, Betty Taylor, Rusty Taylor, Rob Taylor It was on a very hot day in August when we picked up Selwyn at the airport, and it wasn’t long before he warmed our home with his sense of humor and resilient spirit. His first cultural shock was on the two hour ride home from Dcs Moines. Every town we approached surely had to be Bloomfield, as the whole of Belgium can be crossed in about an hour! Selwyn never really experienced homesickness, having lived in a rather independent family and having traveled extensively. However, we’ll never forget the look on his face when, on Christmas morning, he called his family, and after the first ring, his mother answered. The next shock was when he discovered he couldn’t speak Dutch to her! One of Selwyn’s goals here was to participate in sports, as Belgium schools don’t have athletic activities. He participated in cross- country and really appreciated the support and encouragement he received from the coach and other team members. Basketball also was an important part of Selwyn’s year here. The opportunity to play before the home fans and get a rebound was a highlight Welcoming a stranger into your home and making adjustments necessary to become “family” is a very challenging adventure. Our family is not the same as it was before Selwyn arrived--now a part of us resides many miles away in Belgium. Bob Bette Taylor Rob Rusty For a Belgium guy who grew up in a big city, Bloomfield seemed to be in the middle of nowhere at first. There were cornfields everywhere and I wasn’t used to living 6 miles from town, but it didn’t take me long to figure out that this town was going to be a fun place to live. I was very fortunate to have a really nice family, with two brothers who helped me through all the new things, and parents to whom I could relate all my problems and impressions. School was also a great new experience that I will never forget. It didn’t take me long to get to know all the students, because most of the people here have been very nice to me. The teachers allowed me time to adapt, and the athletic coaches have given me a wonderful opportunity to participate in sports. Everyone also showed a great interest in Belgium. Thanks to the people here, 1 lost my stereotypes about American life. The people also helped me realize that a small town can be a fun place to live; I never really felt homesick. 1 leave in hopes that you of Davis County will never forget me; I surely will never forget any of you, and everyone is more than welcome to visit me in Belgium, someday. Good Luck Everyone! From Selwyn iDelwyn' Devroe ROTA RY FOREIGN EXCHANGE Ever since I was a little boy, I have wanted to travel, particularly to Europe. I never dreamed that I would end up in Iowa, in what must be one of the friendliest towns in the United States. 1 really had no idea of what I was getting myself into when I applied to become a foreign exchange student. There were eight other hopefuls, and 1 was the only “bloke”. The day I applied was a very hot day, but to impress the selection panel, 1 wore my school uniform and a woolen school blazer. I was interviewed and then left—feeling very down. 1 felt that I had made a very bad impression. I thought I had no chance of being selected against all of the other extraordinary people who were also trying out. I was totally surprised when I was eventually selected and then began to worry about the District Selections. My first choice of a country to go to was Denmark, followed by six others; then the USA. However, I have absolutely no regrets about being placed in the United States. I think it is a great place. 1 did have a few misconceptions about Americans before I came over. In Australia, the only Americans we sec arc really arrogant, and they think they own the world. Then we watch TV, and sec that American families arc rich. 1 expected to sec two blacks to every white person. ! also thought that Iowa would be really, really, flat, like a pancake. I was pleasantly surprised to find that not one of these things were true. The average Americans arc really quite normal and arc not as rich or snobby as 1 thought they would be. And Iowa isn’t half as bad as I thought it would look. I mean, there arc trees and there arc hills. And now, after the warm weather and the rain, the green grass is just so beautiful. So far, I have had a really great time over here. I have been blessed with what 1 may term “the perfect” family. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. They arc great! They took me to Colorado with them, and they are so helpful and kind; it is really amazing. Skiing in Colorado was just so much fun! We visited the Steamboat Springs, just west of the Continental Divide, and it was simply marvelous. We were there for seven days, and every day was just incredible. America is truly a marvelous nation. It is very different; more progressive than anything I have ever seen before. However, as pan of Dorothea Mackclla’s bcutiful poem, My Country ”, reads: love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains. Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding plains. I love her jewel sea Her beauty and her terror This wide, brown land forme... And this is exactly how I feel. I love my country, but I am also thrilled to have this opportunity to travel and to sec another part of the world that I had only dreamed existed. Thank You Bloomfield, and your friendly residents, for this chance to extend my awareness of the outside world and its people. It is a real pleasure to be here, and I plan to enjoy every moment of my stay right up until I leave here in January of 1989. It will be a sad but happy day when I go, but 1 am sure I shall take many, many pleasant memories with me. Ones I shall never forget as long as I live. Andrew Robertson -UNITED STATES— Skung at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, 1988. (Left to Right): Eric. Tricia Maddox, Mila, Sally Maddox, Kristin Maddox, me. —AUSTRALIA— My family and I at Brisbane International Airport. (Left to Right): Father (Doug), Kirstyand Robbena (sisters), myself, Mother (Heather). Andrew arrived in January to a little snow, a commodity he had never seen, and some very cold weather. He came very close to a lot of snow at times when he ventured to conquer a mountain in Colorado with two sticks strapped to his feet. He is a quiet individual until one gets to know him, and then Australia conquers all. Andrew is a very good ambassador from down under and a very good bloke at that. A few things he enjoys are spaghetti, even for breakfast, and ice cream; but misses vegamite sandwiches. TV and Nintendo games occupy a lot of his time; especially “Cheers”. We thank the Bloomfield Rotary Club for making his stay possible. We all learn a lot from this program, so 1 hope everyone can participate a little in getting to know these young people. The season was a disappointment, due to the fact that several games were lost by one or two runs, and also the main part of team were seniors who had a lot of experience. Costly errors were our biggest problem. First of all, the 87 Mustangs worked very hard to improve from game to game. They never jjave up on improving or trying to be successful. . Secondly, they played all season as a team and never put themselves before the team. Thirdly, their training habits were very good, probably better than the rest of the teams on the conference. And finally, this is a group of young men, that if they will ever taste the sweetness of success, will enjoy it and never let it out of their heads!!! 56 FOOTBALL ROW ONE: Jeff Rysdam, Clint Huggens, Travis Smith, Scott Moore, Jeremy McElderry, Jeremy Arnold. C. 1988 This year was the fourth year that Mr. Perry and Mrs Gutru-Rupe have organized a bus tour and taken junior and senior students to Washington D.C., Gettysburg, and Colonial Williamsburg. This year’s trip lasted six days—from March 30 to April 4, 1988. A few of the highlights from this year’s trip are pictured on this page. They were the White House, Gettysburg Museum, the Statue dedicated to the Vietnam Veterans, the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery Amphitheater, and the St. Louis Arch. Other places visited were the Smithsonian Museum, National Air and Space Museum, Ford’s Theater, and many other sites. This year’s group will never forget the “Ultimate” of all bus drivers—SERIOUSLY—Keith! Many fund raisers were held throughout the 1987-88 school year. Among these were: the sale of ads, bake sales, the sale of 4 school newspapers, the sale of autograph supplements for this yearbook, the Christmas Dance, the sale of flowers for Valentine’s Day, the Valentine’s Day Dance, and the Dream- Date Sweepstakes. We appreciate all the support you have shown us, through the success of our fund raisers and we hope that the reading of this yearbook which we have so “tirelessly slaved over’’ has brought fulfillment to your lives.
