Silvio Pessoa joined us in Mid August as the AFS student at D.C.H.S. for the 85-86 school year. He suffered some from cul- ture shock having come from a city of two million. His 8 years of American English helped him become one of the family easily. We gave him a big dose of Iowa culture. First, we went to the Iowa State Fair and then to the Old Threashers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant. Silvio especial- ly enjoyed the reenactment of a train robbery of the steam train. Silvio, being a formula one auto racing fan liked the visit to the Indianapolis 500 race'track in November. Arriving home on Sunday morning, snow and ice were everywhere. Silvio was thrilled with his first experience with snow and cold weather. However, the novelty soon wore off and he joined us in anticipation of Spring. By this time we were sharing many ex- periences together. Silvio and 1 talked often about politics or economic prob- lems of the world. AFS STUDENT SILVIO PESSOA I think Silvio was disappointed that soc- cer and volleyball aren't played more here. However, he did play on a men's city league volleyball team and enjoyed it a lot. We've all grown as a family. We, exper- iencing a high schooler, and our two younger kids having the experience of an older brother. He's a part of us now, as we've shared many talks of our cultures. We share many goals and ideals, differ- ing on some, but we're all better for it. Stephen Tews
