This ad- dition is filled with many fond memories of my senior year. So as you thumb through the pages, I hope you enjoy the '86 volume of the DCHS annual entitled Dear Diary. I A C T I ¥ I T I IE 8 Silvio Pessoa joined us in Mid August as the AFS student at D.C.H.S. for the 85-86 school year. He suffered some from cul- ture shock having come from a city of two million. His 8 years of American English helped him become one of the family easily. We gave him a big dose of Iowa culture. First, we went to the Iowa State Fair and then to the Old Threashers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant. Silvio especial- ly enjoyed the reenactment of a train robbery of the steam train. Silvio, being a formula one auto racing fan liked the visit to the Indianapolis 500 race'track in November. Arriving home on Sunday morning, snow and ice were everywhere. Silvio was thrilled with his first experience with snow and cold weather. However, the novelty soon wore off and he joined us in anticipation of Spring. By this time we were sharing many ex- periences together. Silvio and 1 talked often about politics or economic prob- lems of the world. AFS STUDENT SILVIO PESSOA I think Silvio was disappointed that soc- cer and volleyball aren't played more here. However, he did play on a men's city league volleyball team and enjoyed it a lot. We've all grown as a family. We, exper- iencing a high schooler, and our two younger kids having the experience of an older brother. He's a part of us now, as we've shared many talks of our cultures. We share many goals and ideals, differ- ing on some, but we're all better for it. Stephen Tews 9 We, the student body and faculty, of D.C.H.S. would like to wish Sil- vio the BEST! Thank you for sharing your culture, friendhsip, and especially your smile with us during the 1985- 86 school year. The Pries- ters enjoyed learning about Swed- ish Christmas customs and life styles. The Priesters also intro- duced Hedde to our traditional cus- toms of America and to their own tradition of hanging the tree. The Priester's daughters learned what it was like to truly have a big sister . I am writing this farewell letter on the day of graduation- the last day for the 1986 seniors. Tomorrow we are all off searching for our future. I will go my way and you will go yours. Maybe our roads will cross and we will meet again, maybe someday, maybe someway. This year went fast and I made a lot of friends that I will never forget. I want to thank you all for being here this year and making it a great memory in my life. My time and space are running out so I just want to say that I will miss you all. I have many fond memories of Da- vid High and I hope you have fond memories of me too. -Hedde Hedde arrived a couple of weeks before school started, she had a lit- tle time to rest from her trip from Sweden, which had included a few days in New York City. Hedde was excited when we registered her for her classes and she could hardly wait for school to start. (She was Qtedle QYl. (Sricsion enjoyed having Hedde live with us. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about Sweden from our extra daughter , as she liked to call her- self. Mr. and Mrs. John Schroeder thrilled when she registered by her nick name instead of her given name, Hedvig, which she said sounded like the name of an old person.) Every day she came home from school looking forward to the next. During the time she lived with us, Hedde participated as a member of the cast of the commu- nity players' production of My Fair Lady . Hedde loved music and enjoyed the chance to pursue this activity, though I know the late hours of rehearsal really tired her. For us, one of the highlights of Hedde's year was the visit by her parents in April. What a joy it was to have these delightful people who so generously shared their daugh- ter with Davis County. Our family 7 CARIBBEAN CRUISE '86 Dear Diary, Prom this year differed from the usual. It was held at the Country Club. The theme was Caribbean Cruise. Valet parking was used as everyone stepped aboard the S.S. D.C.H.S. at 8:00 p.m. on April 26th, 1986. It was decorated with blue streamers and silver stars. Plastic cups and napkins with this years' theme served as souvenirs for all of those who wanted them. “The Giz- mo Entertainment Company sup- plied entertainment. It also differed some in the music area — videos were presented. The Community businesses again sponsored a Casino Night and movie, Down And Out In Beverly Hills . Activities included casino games, an auction in which a car stereo sold for 12 million dollars, and a breakfast. PICTURE ONE: Enjoying prom. And if I should ever go away, well, then close your eyes and try to feel the way we do today, and then if your remember — Keep smiling, keep shining, knowing you can always count on me for sure that's what friends are for. And I never thought I'd feel this way well you came and opened me and now there's so much more I see and so, by the way, I thank you. And then for the times when we're apart well, then close your eyes and know these words are coming from my heart, and then if you can remember. Keep smiling, Keep shining, knowing you can always count on me for sure that's what friends are for. The cooks and janitors at Davis Co. perform vital roles from preparing school lunches to cleaning up after school activities, which are no easy tasks. OUR STAFF THE '86 YEARBOOK STAFF PROUDLY DEDICATES THIS EDITION OF THE 'MUSTANG', TO ELDORA LEAON, FOR TWENTY-TWO YEARS OF SERVICE. Dear Diary, On September 19, before the school day began, Eldora Leon was honored by those she had worked with, laughed with and even those she occasionally chased with her meat cleaver. We were honoring a wonderful gal, who had devoted twenty-two years to the Davis County School system. The faculty and staff showered her with cards, notes, poems, funny thoughts and a pair of diamond earrings. Later that morning, the stu- dent council, gave her a coursage to wear on her last day in the kitchen. Saying good bye is always hard, and this was no excep- tion. How do you thank someone for all of the many wonderful things that they do and say over a twenty- two year span. Eldora was a lady who could always be found feeding crust to a starving guidance counselor, crackers to the janitors, cookies during third hour teacher break time and cheese to a couple of the faculty (those who thought cookies were fattening). Many times her timing and sense of humor was im- peccable. The times that she chased Mr. Squire with her meat cleaver, her notes to the boss, the memories of other school years and her jokes were just some o the memories that we all share. But yet, there was tender side to Eldora, one that accepted and appreciat ed those around her. She was gentle, understanding and forgiving. She possessed all of the qualities tha most people work their lives to obtain. We, the faculty staff, students and administration would like to tak( this opportunity to thank Eldora for her sincen friendship and dedication. The Yearbook Staff, would like to dedicate this 198C MUSTANG YEARBOOK, DEAR Diary , to Eldon Leon, our dedicated friend. We who have known her sc well consider ourselves fortunate. The MUSTANC staff extend our best wishes for a happy future anc congratulate her for a job well done. Sincerely, The Yearbook Staff Ann Robinson, advisor Eldora proudly displays the infamous meat cleaver at her retirement dinner at the Pale Moon in Centerville. The din- ner was hosted by her co- workers, (pictured with her on page 65) and the meat cleaver was a gift presented by them and painted by Debbie Baugh- man. Pictured at left with El- dora is Ina Fox. The cleaver was also a gift from Darlene Warning, lunch program coordinator. We would also like to take this op- portunity to thank Darlene, for without her pictures this page could not have been com- pleted. ELDORA LEON Dear Diary, September 10, 1986, my last day at school and I'm much older and wiser than my first day in August of 1963. One thing for certain every day was just a bit different than the one before and there never were any dull ones. Soon learned young people very definitely prefered tacos, ham- burgers, and pizza over carrots and spinach and they weren't too impressed by the nutrient values of vegetables and fruit over their favorites. But they always were a great bunch of students down through the years and if you treated them with courtesy and respect they returned it in as great a measure. I am very grateful through all the years I had such an under- standing faculty and administration to work with and the greatest ever co-workers. I shall always treasure the memories of the years I was at Davis County High and can only say Thanks for the memory. The first half of the season was primarily down as the Mustangs dropped 9 out of 10 games but got things rolling in the second half by winning 7 out of 9. The team mainly consisted of underclassmen starting only two seniors which were Doug Davis-pitcher and Darin Knowler-second base. The rest of the starters consisted of five juniors and two sophomores. Varsi- ty was champion of the Albia Tour- nament, Runner up of the Chariton Tournament, and the J.V. team was Champion of the Burlington Tour- nament. Trisha Horn was named to first team All-Conference and Honor- able mention All-State, Brenda Armstrong was named to 2nd team All-Conference, and Christel Mathews was named to Honorable mention All-Conference. Way to go gals! Mrs. Barnett said it was a re- building year with a team of pre- dominately juniors. A Mid-season slump hurt their overall record but they were tough late in the season and made some people sit up and take notice at tournament time. They will be a contender next sea- son with all but one regular starter back. She said it could be that 1986 will be the year for Volleyball! The only positive thing that can be said about it is that it was a learning experience for the boys. I hope they can learn from their mistakes and have a super season next year. 73 DEAR DIARY, Graduating Seniors of the 1985-86 season were: Yancy Morgan, Stacy Reese and Darin Dixon. BRIAN WILCOX SECOND PLACE 1986 STATE The 1985 season saw the re- turn of three state qualifiers and a strong senior class at various weights for the Mus- tangs. Pre-season predictions in the conference picked the Mustangs to challenge for a high upper division finish. The conference schools who had experienced and out- standing wrestlers returning were Centerville, Grinnell, Oskaloosa, and Davis Coun- ty, and that is the way the duel season of the South Cen- tral Conference ended up. Da- vis County was 4-3 for the conference duels. In the Con- ference Tournament, D.C. crowned champions at 98-Bri- an Wilcox, 145-Shawn Stream, and 185-Mark Hen- derson. Two wrestlers who returned to the State Tourna- ment in Des Moines for Da- vis County were Brian Wilcox and Shawn Stream. Both grapplers had fantastic sea- sons with a combined record of 57 victories and were rated first or second at their weights. Shawn wrestled very well but was defeated during the first round match. Brian wrestled aggressively and qualified for the finals. The match was televised and saw the first four weights for class 2A include a wrestler from the South Central Conference at each weight. Brian wrestled a valiant match and was de- feated but he accomplished what only a few had ever done in school history. In many ways, the 1985 season was the Best Ever for Davis County wrestling. Last night I attended corona- tion and watched my friends Kelly Rooney and Darin Westh- off get crowned king and queen. Afterwards, I attended a bonfire where there was several cheers and pep talks. As a tradition, Davis County students T-P'd the entire town and it made front page of the Ottumwa Cou- rier. The Student Council spon- sored a before game hog roast and it was a big success. The game, unfortunately, wasn't such a success, it was pouring down rain but we had fun any- way. We played Pella and lost 7- 40! We celebrated our loss with a dance and everyone had a great time. The Student Council tried something new this year, they D-J'd our dance to help cut down expenses. It turned out pretty well. 90 PICTURE 1 After all these years, the class of '86 finally won the float competi- tion. PICTURE 2 The Junior float re- ceived second place. FUTURE BOWL Dear Dairy, Future Bowl in a competitive program for ca- pable, creative students who are interested in working with small groups to solve problems involving Futuristics. Students work together to investigate major problem areas and then at- tempt to solve a specific situation. Major topics for this school year were Endangered Species, Feeding the World, and Artificial Intelligence. This year's team qualified to compete at the state level at Coe College in April. That topic was the American Legal System. QUIZ BOWL PICTURE 1 (left to right) Chris Stogdill, Joanne Kaufman, Kathy Gordy, Chris Martin, Mark Cassill. The year started its activities with Homecoming events. Slob day. Geek day, and Maroon Gold day started off the week followed by a dance. Several members of Student Council acted as disc-jockeys to save money this year, they spent a lot of time getting ready and everyone had a good time. Also, a Student Council Conference in Ames, Iowa was attended by a few members of our Student Council this year. Traditional Valentine flowers were sold and another dance was hosted with music supplied by our own Student Coun- cil. The Building Trades Course, directed by Bob Tade, is designed to provide basic instruction in light frame construction. They cover all aspects of construction, in a hands on experience. Things done in class: concrete, framing, sheeting, roofing, windows and doors, paint- ing, plumbing, and electrical, to name a few. The course was not designed to produce a finished carpen- ter, but a young person that has the basic skills to support himself in the building trades. This year the building and trades class had four main proj'ects: they built a shelter house for the Bloomfield Care Center, they constructed Welcome to Bloomfield signs for the Chamber of Commerce, they worked on the music room at the Pulaski Elementary School, and they built a 24 X 30' building for the Issak Walton League. The FFA emblem, corn gold and national blue, is proudly displayed in all fifty states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The national membership totals 835,000 in 8,200 schools. Iowa has 268 chapters with over 11,000 members, of which the Bloomfield chapter has 116. Bloomfield chapter members were involved in numerous activities throughout the past year. Members staged a children's barnyard at the Davis County Fair as part of their Building Our American Communities project. Chapter officers attended state and national leadership conferences to further their leadership abilities. Livestock was exhibited at the county and state fair by thirty-five chapter members. The chapter hosted the Southwest Sub-District Green- hand Orientation and the Southern Sub-District FFA contest. The exciting National FFA convention in Kansas City, Mo. was attended by eleven chapter members in November. Annual fruit and cheese sales of 1900 boxes of citrus, apples, and cheese netted members money to finance their activities throughout the year. Crop test plots of corn and soybeans allowed members to learn proper crop management procedures. At the 1986 State FFA Convention five members received the Iowa Farmer Degree with one being named one of six Star District Farm- ers. Two members were in the State Chorus and one in State Band. Marcia Hopkins served on the Courtesy Corps as a District Officer and Matt Musselman was elected to s rve as State FFA Secretary for 1986-87. The chapter was honored with Triple Crown, Boac, Safety, Journalism awards. The chapter and its members played a vital role in developing “Leaders for the New Fields of Agriculture. Throughout the year, Spanish Club members have kept busy with fundraisers by selling candy, calenders and various gift items. They have participated at homecoming with the Spanish Club float and were entertained at Amy McConnel's on Halloween with a hayride and weiner roast. An interesting addition to regular classroom exercises was the advanced Spanish student's opportunity to introduce Spanish to elementary students involved in the local Gifted and Talent- ed Program. It was an educational and enjoyable experience for all of those involved. Also, advanced Spanish students took a trip to Wm. Penn College in Oskaloose where they participated in different ac- tivities expanding their cultural horizons. Students also visited Central College, Pella for their annual Language Day. This year, three advanced students; Neila Johnson, Jeff Heifort and foreign exchange student Silvio Pessoa Jr., went to Kirksville, Mo. to participate in NMSU's annual Aca- demic Festival. These students, presented a visual dis- play an interpretation, receiving a I rating. Probably the most exciting highlight of the year was the Annual Foreign Language Banquet. This year the banquet was prepared by students and parents. Many cultural displays, presentation and skits were pre- formed for parents and teachers by the students. Also performing was Hedde Ericsson, exchange student from Sweden, singing a folk song from her native country. YEARBOOK Dear Diary, The yearbook staff is responsible for putting together a presentable yearbook, which they try to please everyone with. This is a very hard task, but they can only do their best. They have their fun; however, when push comes to shove, they get the job done. There are a few which should be especially mentioned with the completion of this book. Missy Howk, which acted as both the photographer and the co-editor, had a constant job. She spent most of all of her spare time taking pictures and developing film. Also, Mrs. Robinson (Mrs. R) our advisor, worked very hard and put up with almost too much in order to finish this yearbook.
