Albia eats Davis’ dust. 22-Homecoming The homecoming football game was nearly a disasterous event for the Davis County Mustangs as three of the Mustangs’ starters were injured within about four minutes of each other. Two more Davis players were out for short stints because of injuries, but the Mustangs were able to have a 26-6 lead after three quarters. Davis County lost Kevin Vinzant and Kent Anderson for the remainder of the game. Ted Shipley was out for the rest of the season with a broken leg. With the loss of personnel at the fullback position. Coach Gary Kubik had to use Mark Friend, who was pulled out of the stands and told to get dressed, and third-string quarterback Mark Ritter. The injuries were directly related to Albia’s last quarter rally, but it fell short and the outcome of the game was 26-20. Offensively, the Mustang key was its passing. Davis County completed 11 of 21 passes for 171 yards. Kent Anderson was 5 for 8 in the first half for 105 yards, and Vic Combs was 6 for 12 for 66 yards with only one interception. Randy Evans at split end was the one who had much to do with the offensive attack. He caught 6 passes for 89 yards and one for a touchdown. He also played a fine defensive game where he had 5 tackles, a quarterback sack and an interception. Dickie Bish caught 3 passes for 36 yards and Robert Peck caught one for 44 yards and a touchdown. Roger Gordy was on the receiving end of another pass. Kevin Vinzant opened up the scoring with a 9 yard blast off tackle in the first quarter. Albia’s first score came with 4:46 left in the first quarter with a 61 yard run by Dave Teirney. With the second quarter just under way Robert Peck scored on a 44 yard pass from Kent Anderson with Kelly Pottorff kicking the P.H.T. Still in the second quarter, Ted Shipley plunged through the middle for another score from 12 yards out. In the second half Evans started the scoring with a 26 yard pass reception from Combs to round out the Davis scoring. The Albia rally came in the fourth quarter with a 5 yard run by Chris Peterson and finally with 3:37 left in the game Peterson again scored on a 31 yard pass from Mick Flattery. However, the game ended with a Mustang victory 26-20.
