Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1980 volume:

Tommy Hopkins Brian Heerdink They have died. And While vve tried to face reality We cried And Tried to understand These fatalities. In their life They laughed And sang And shared memories with us. But In death The faces That have glittered With love And hope Grew dim As if darkened By a fatal blow. And again we cried. And Though we did not know That they had so little chance To stay here with us We hoped And prayed That they may be. And perhaps they are. But not with us. Nancy Teubel 2 Dedication V x f Tommy Dean Hopkins May 18, 1962 - August 16. 1979 Dedication 3 Debra Lynn Spargnr 4 Dedication February 26. 1960 - December 6, 1979 Brian Andrew Heerdink A Special Togetherness Is The 1980 Mustang is the student’s book — a book representing one year of our high school days; for some it may have been their first; for others it may have been their last. Come on let’s get this match on the road! What would this school be like without your friends around? Realized In The Immediacy Not me!! How do you like my new hairstyle? Students of all kinds made up our school, and believe me it has been quite a year! As individuals we grew finding our strengths and weaknesses, our loves and hates. Look out; Robert and Vic are going pro! Starlene and Tina posing for a picture. Anybody want to buy an ice cream cone? They are only 15c apiece. The smallest good deed is better than the grandest good intention. Theme 7 But most of all, we found our- selves reflected in the memor- ies of the good and the bad times at DCH. Of Now, Of Today. Students Starting their high school days in style. Oh, no, the Boa Constrictor is after me!! How's that for a picture? Gee thanks, just what I needed! Put Into Action The Saying, Once more around the square. Ronda Sue posing for a picture. Becky is in for another landing. It’s safe to say that no other school is quite like ours — ours is a unique one among many. Davis County High is ours. We have a feeling of belonging here. And just as our school is unique, so are the students who learn here. Each one of us is more than a name, we are each a real person. Wonder what Jill is up to? “Today Is The Tomorrow You Deniese and Nancy at the state capital. Wil Please Pass ,he cards ou,? Oh, no, not another picture! Time passes quickly and so soon we find the year is past. There was a time and a purpose for everything that has happened— a time to share your dreams with others and to be just your- self. The long awaited summer will quickly turn to fall and along with turning of colored leaves comes the beginning of a new school year. While the seniors are reaching their goal, upcoming freshmen will be here to take their place. 10 Theme Get a move-on girls! Hi there! Why didn’t you wait till I’m finished? Dreamed Of Yesterday” And Hey look, it’s Sharon, julie, and Linda. Studious students — they must be from D.C. In Doing So Reached Many Goals. Can’t you tell; Jeff is kinda camera shy. Our school has, like a spider web, a nucleus representing the successful merger of student backing, administrative leadership, and booster support. This nucleus is not possible unless we all help in holding it together. We are still one among many but individuals to ourselves. Autograph 12-Autographs Pages Autographs-13 Activities King Tim Queen Pam What a Homecoming! The excitement started on Monday and built up all week, ending on Friday night. Monday started out with Hat Button Day. Through the rest of the week came 50’s Day, Mix and Don’t Match Day, Hobo Day. and the traditional Maroon and Gold Day on Friday. On Wednesday, a pep assembly was given by the FBLA members; it was a “Battle of the Sexes’’ between members and varsity football players. The spirits were highest during the cheerleaders pep assembly on Friday. Coronation was a little different this year and was a real big success. It was held up-town on the courthouse steps during the Fine Arts Council Fun Night. Pam Davis was crowned queen and Tim Shipley reigned as king. The football boys and coaches arrived home after the bonfire to find their yards well decorated with toilet paper. The creative work was done by the football cheerleaders and their helpers. There was the traditional ride around the square on the fire truck followed by the bonfire on the softball field at the high school. Also, taking place during the week was float work for each class and organization. Finally the big day came - FRIDAY! Something different in the parade this year was the past Senior football cheerleaders clear back from 1920. This was put together by all the cheerleaders and their sponsor, Mrs. Altheide. A tea was held after the game for the cheerleaders. The winning float belonged to the Junior Class. It was a beautiful day for a football game. The Mean Machine played the Albia Demons. Before the game Queen Pam and attendants were driven around the track and seated on the track in front of the grandstand. The Mustangs emerged victorious with a score of 26-20. After the game there was a dance held in the small gym. The theme was “A Place In The Sun”; with Pheonix playing the tunes. Homecoming 1979 left students with many memories. Out of her busy schedule as Homecoming Queen and football cheerleader, Pam finds time to play a solo during halftime. Two more Davis players were out for short stints because of injuries, but the Mustangs were able to have a 26-6 lead after three quarters. Davis County lost Kevin Vinzant and Kent Anderson for the remainder of the game. Ted Shipley was out for the rest of the season with a broken leg. With the loss of personnel at the fullback position. Coach Gary Kubik had to use Mark Friend, who was pulled out of the stands and told to get dressed, and third-string quarterback Mark Ritter. The injuries were directly related to Albia’s last quarter rally, but it fell short and the outcome of the game was 26-20. Offensively, the Mustang key was its passing. Davis County completed 11 of 21 passes for 171 yards. Kent Anderson was 5 for 8 in the first half for 105 yards, and Vic Combs was 6 for 12 for 66 yards with only one interception. Randy Evans at split end was the one who had much to do with the offensive attack. He caught 6 passes for 89 yards and one for a touchdown. He also played a fine defensive game where he had 5 tackles, a quarterback sack and an interception. Dickie Bish caught 3 passes for 36 yards and Robert Peck caught one for 44 yards and a touchdown. Roger Gordy was on the receiving end of another pass. Kevin Vinzant opened up the scoring with a 9 yard blast off tackle in the first quarter. Albia’s first score came with 4:46 left in the first quarter with a 61 yard run by Dave Teirney. With the second quarter just under way Robert Peck scored on a 44 yard pass from Kent Anderson with Kelly Pottorff kicking the P.H.T. Still in the second quarter, Ted Shipley plunged through the middle for another score from 12 yards out. In the second half Evans started the scoring with a 26 yard pass reception from Combs to round out the Davis scoring. The Albia rally came in the fourth quarter with a 5 yard run by Chris Peterson and finally with 3:37 left in the game Peterson again scored on a 31 yard pass from Mick Flattery. However, the game ended with a Mustang victory 26-20. Coach Kubik strikes a pose for the camera, Dickie Bish outmanuvers an Albia opponent. Coach Anderson gives the guys some advice. Davis County celebrates its hard-won victory . The Mustangs, poised for an attack. Homecoming-23 Everyone listened to the tunes of “Phoenix. A Place in the Sun,” was the theme for Homecoming 1979. What are you serving, Nanc?? Time for the royalty dance. Homecoming Dance found many couples out on the dance floor, enjoying themselves. OCMFIELD ’ 09 J ' A-Club Fun Night ‘Are you ready for this, dad?” The A Club Fun Night was held Saturday. November 17. It started at noon and ended about 10:00. Fun Night is held annually to raise money for sport teams. The lunch stand opened at 12:00, and then the festivities started at 12:30 with the kindergarten and first grade relays. Elementary activities which included second and third relays, fourth and fifth grade Anything Goes Contest, and sixth grade basketball relays, lasted until 2:00. At 2:30 the middle school students performed in their sports. These included wrestling, girls’ basketball, and boys’ basketball. Then the freshmen and sophomore, girls’ and boys’ basketball teams took over. At the hour of 5:00 the Anything Goes Contest teams of high school students, did their thing. The teams consisted of four girls and four boys, competing for prizes. Then the varsity wrestling, girls’ and boys’ basketball, did their thing. The pie throwing contest began about 8:30. The people in the audience bought pies to throw at their favorite people (or their least favorite?!). And last of all came the adults’ Anything Goes. As usual this was one of the highlights of the evening. All during the Fun Night, various games were run by different athletic groups. Such games as fish pond, a dart game, a penny pitch, a football toss, a basketball shoot, a cake walk, and a baseball throw were downstairs. Everyone attending seemed to have had a great time. One student’s comment on A-Club Fun Night was. Where I came from before, there wasn’t such a thing as this; I think it’s a great way to raise money to contibute to different sport teams, commented Dave Hardy, this being his first year at D.C. Greg Smith also commented on the A-Club Fun Night, This is a great way to earn money for sport teams and getting everbody involved.” Come on, if you can’t hop any faster than that backwards; we'll never make it to the finish line. 26-A-Club Fun Night Brian gives his dad a dose of the pie throwing contest. In the evening students attended a boy’s basketball game here against Knoxville. Following the game all AFS students and their families were invited to Dick Smith’s home for hot chocolate and cookies. Here everyone had a chance to get acquainted and make plans for Saturday. The following day, students had a wide variety of activities; some went to Happy Joe's for pizza, some went shopping in Ottumwa, some went bowling, and some toured the county while others stayed at their families’ home and visited. The evening meal turned out to be a progression supper. Everyone gathered at Dick Smith’s home for appetizers, then moved on to Dr. Finneran’s home for the main dish. Dessert was served at Rowena Hazelhoff’s. At Vern Ball’s home all kinds of snacks and soda were served while everyone enjoyed themselves playing pool, ping-pong, cards or just talking. Sunday there was a family co-op dinner at the Bloomfield United Methodist Church. Patricia from Chile said, ‘‘cruising around the square is fun; back home if we did that, everyone would think we were crazy.”; A few girls had the experience of doing a Chinese firedrill and loved it. “Americans are so fast-paced and always on the go,” commented Carolyn from New Zealand. With a tear in her eye, Sandra from El Salvador AFS Week-end-27 said, America is a great country, it’s beautiful; but I love home much much more.” Annual Student Council Sponsored The Davis County High School talent show for the 1979 year turned out pretty well. Superintendent Edward Hutchcroft As Educators, we are committed to a philosophy of service to children. This objective is to help each child develop as a mature individual and as a contributing member of society. This is accomplished through the development of a school program which encompasses the intellectual, physical, civic, social and aesthetic needs of children in our community. An effective school program will be directed toward common needs of all children, but must also consider the unique differences and needs of individual children. Our task involves a great trust and a greater obligation. In teaching, we must provide challenges for the student according to his abilities and develop in him a love for learning. Assistant Superintendent Ottlin Wegner After working many years in the Davis County Community School District, Dr. Ottlin Wegner has resigned. Dr. Wegner came to Davis County in 1965 as principal of Davis County High, he later replaced W. A. Wegener as assistant superintendent. As assistant superintendent he had handled such duties as curriculum development, programs financed by federal funds and has been the district’s chief negotiator with employee bargaining groups. Dr. Wegner was active in community activities, and was recently president of the Bloomfield Areas Chamber of Commerce. We will surely miss Dr. Wegner as he leaves Bloomfield to accept a position as superintendent of schools at Sundance, Wyoming. Dr. Wegner is a kind and loving person to be around. He always had a smile and friendly thought to share with everyone he come in contact with. We wish you the best of luck in your future job. He received top ratings at the State Speech Contest and earned several awards at the Northeast Missouri State University Academic Festival and the South Central Conference Math Contest. For the last two years he has attended the Governor’s U.N. Day and during his sophomore, junior, and senior years he participated in the Iowa High School Model U.N. in Cedar Falls. He served as the head delegate of this session during his senior year. He has also worked at Keith’s Super Valu for the past two years. Mark is enrolled at Drake University, planning to major in political science in the College of Business with intentions to earn a degree in law someday. I like this school. It makes me feel secure, but I’m ready to move on to college.” DENIESE BALL - Valedictorian. Deniese graduated with a grade point of 3.77 on a 4.00 scale: she has never received a B in her high school days. In preparation for her college studies Deniese has been taking college prep courses throughout high school. These courses have included physics, advanced composition, advanced math for four years, chemistry and humanities. She has also taken youth and law and two years of marching band. Classroom studies have not been the only activities that have kept her busy for the past four years. She has been in Future Business Leaders of America for two years and has served as its vice-president. She was the sophomore class secretary, junior class president, and senior class secretary. She also has been the student council president during her senior year and National Honor Society president. She participated in golf for four years, volleyball for three years and basketball for two years. During the summer and tax season she has worked at her father’s law office. Deniese has won several awards during high school. She has been named a State of Iowa Scholar and has won several awards in the conference math contest, the Northeast Missouri State University Academic Festival and the FBLA State Contest. She recently was named the winner of the school and regional DAR Award. She also served as the student representative from District 90 at the First Model Iowa Legislature and on the school’s NCA evaluation team. I can’t wait to go to college. she said, “but I’m afraid that it might be hard to adjust.” The class of 1980 was never one for sitting around and doing nothing. Always being involved in many activities: places to go, things to do. and people to see!! After not having much luck in junior high athletics, we have moved to the high school level where we have participated in State Tournaments and Meets!! We have also been active in dramatics, speech, instrumental and vocal music, and many other organizations. The class of 1980 has been contributing their time and effort to them for four years. As the 1980 graduating class left the hills of Davis High, they left behind many memories. There were tears and smiles, sobs and laughter. A turning point in our lives. The 1980 graduating classes senior year was a year that was alive with the hope, dreams, and ambition. Graduation was a special day, a day to be remembered for the rest of our lives. A day to be proud of and to walk with our heads held high. A reward was given to each graduate for his thirteen years of achievement - a diploma. Names were called, a handshake shared, a tassle flipped - all taking only a moment. The class of 1980 walked through the doors to an edge gained, the friendships made and those memories to be kept of our years at D.C. Now the doors of a new unexplored future are wide open and waiting for us to enter. Seniors . . . Seniors . . . Seniors . . . But gladly lend your gentleness and grace To warm the hearts of those whose lives are lonely And help to make their world a better place: If you can be courageous when deafeated And humble in the face of victory, Or give your best until a task’s completed, However difficult that task may be: If you can strive, not caring who gets credit. And work at building bridges and not walls. Or hearing idle slander, just forget it And never fail to help someone who falls: If you can give your help without begrudging The patience, time and effort you impart Or look at others’ weakness without judging And see. not with your eyes, but with your heart; If you can take resources that surround you And use them in the way you feel you should, THE WORLD WILL BE BETTER. High Left - Alessandra Arcadu from Italy, stayed with the Gary Spurgeon family and Carla Segalla from Brazil, stayed with the Gary Johnson family. Alessandra Arcadu Alessandra is from Milan. Italy which is quite different from Bloomfield, Her hobbies include writing, riding, bicycles, and going to concerts in Italy. While attending school here, she took history, algebra II. Chemistry, and American novels. She also participated in band, French, and Spanish club. Her school in Italy is different than ours because the teachers change classes and the students stay in the same room. She goes to school in the mornings and studies in the afternoons. The thing she missed most about Italy was the food. In Italy, she said that they eat sweet and sour things together and we don’t. Her favorite American food is cottage cheese. Alessandra has enjoyed the activities which she has been involved in; especially working on the homecoming float, a custom that is limited to the United States. Alessandra feels that her AFS experience has been the best way for her to learn about another culture. “The AFS program helps you to know the American people and their way of life. I don’t think a tourist can know very well the people. Living the everyday life is the best way to know. It was a great experience. It was very useful — for everybody. It helps very much to know yourself and to know your own country and society. It has given me the opportunity to know I have a lot of similarities to all the people of the world. The life in little towns is alike all over the world, always the same, Alessandra said. When she first arrived she thought one year wouldn’t give sufficient time to learn about another culture, but has since changed her mind. Graduation was a new type of experience for Alessandra; for her it wasn’t sad, but she had a strange feeling. In Italy nobody wanted to stay in high school; there is no graduation. Students have a big exam and then go back to school and see the paper that has been posted to see whether they passed or not. Alessandra was glad that it was different; she says, here when you do something, people notice it and so people do things with better feeling because they are paid back. She eventually hopes to go to college. Alessandra said she likes the people here and thinks we have a very good school. Carla Segalla Carla is from Birigue; a town of approximately 20,000 in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her hobbies include listening to music, dancing, driving fast cars, sports, biking, and camping. The relationship between boys and girls and the fact that our rules are so strict really surprised her. Carla likes slang, especially American slang. She has given more importance to her family and what they do for her. Carla didn't feel so thankful before; she felt she was spoiled, but this year has made her feel more thankful. Carla said she appreciated the importance of faith that the Johnsons have placed in their lives. She has started to care more for God. In Brazil, faith is more a secondary thing. Carla has also learned the importance of having a good, close relationship with her American family. Just as she had to adjust to her new family, there were adjustments to make at school. Because of the language barrier she spent many of her evening hours pouring over literature assignments with her English Portuguese dictionary by her side. It was so slow at first, she said. “I was learning one word at a time and reading one story a day.” But eventually Carla did catch onto the language. She said the English she learned this past year would be worth more than ten years of English lessons in her country. Carla went out to the movies and for pizza quite a few times. She said here most people are in bed at three in the morning; in Brazil it is common to stay out until three or four in the morning on weekends. Carla’s favorite food is Beef Stroganoff. Tenspeed and Brownshoe” is her favorite T.V. program; she hates soap operas and thinks they are dumb. Graduation was also a different experience for Carla. In Brazil they don’t care. Here they really make it big. I saw some friends crying and at first I laughed, but then I cried. Friends, even those I didn’t know very well, came up and hugged me and wished me well. And all the teachers I had here were wonderful to me. Carla said. She someday hopes to work in some type of international relations or communications using foreign languages. We all want to thank you for choosing our community to live in. We appreciate the opportunity in having to become acquainted with you, Alessandra and Carla. It’s been great having both of you around to cheer up our school. We all wish you the best of luck in your futures. A super defensive team is what gave the sophomores their South Central Conference championship. The Colts beat the Knoxville Panther’s 14-7 in the conference playoff game held at the Mustang Stadium. While the Colt’s offense rolled up over 200 yards in total offense in the game, it was the defense that was called on time and again. Five offensive turnovers kept getting the Colts in trouble and each time the defense bailed the team out. Knoxville's only score came against the offensive unit, an 85-yard return of a pass interception. Otherwise, Knoxville never seriously threatened to score. Knoxville ended the game with minus seven yards rushing and their only movement of the ball came through the air and that was minimal. Knoxville passers were 7 of 17 for the night for only 46 yards. The offense rolled up 208 yards rushing, but didn’t complete a pass, against what Coach Huggins called an extremely tough Knoxville defense. Mark Friend carried the ball 21 times and gained 147 yards, an average of 7.05 per carry. He scored both of the Colts touchdowns. Mike Rupe was second in line rushing with 57 yards in 14 carries. Our line did an excellent job of blocking the center of the defense; they fired off at the snap and gave our backs that hole up the middle all night. Knoxville's most serious scoring threat came early in the game when Rupe fumbled the ball away on the second play of the game. It was late in the second quarter that the Colts took over on the 50. It seemed that they might add another touchdown before the half as the team moved to the Knoxville five before a pass interception ended that threat. Colts did get their second touchdown shortly after the start of the second half. Friend ran 18 yards to the four and on the next play, he scored, Colts led 12-0. A poor Knoxville punt gave the Colts the ball at the 36. Jeff Shipley gained one on first down and Friend picked up five on second down before rambling for 19 yards and a first down at the 11. Rupe dropped for a five-yard loss, Friend gained one on second down, and Rupe’s pass fell into the flat. A Knoxville player got the ball and made the score 12-7. Rodney Jackson returned the ensuing kickoff 20 yards to the Davis 48 and launched the Colts on another drive. Leading the defensive effort was Friend with 10 tackles. Johnson had 7 and Scott Swaim had 7. Coach Huggins felt that it was a super team effort from a super bunch of dedicated sophomore footballers; they worked hard all year and truly deserved the honor of being conference champions. He also stated that they maintained the idea of playing for the team, not themselves and they all equally own a part of this championship. Conference . Tim wrestled close matches both rounds; winning over Myron Sojka of Washington; and the other against Rod Funral of Carlisle with a 10-0 score. Tim was ranked as the 6th best heavyweight in the Class A in the state. He opened the State Tournament match by taking Funral to the mat for a two point lead. Funral escaped, but Tim took him down again before the first period ended for a 4-1 lead. Funral was in the down position at the start of the second period and escaped from Tim to pull within two points. But Tim took Funral down again. Funral escaped from the down position to take a 7-4 lead. They sparred for most of the period before Funral got a take down near the end of the period for the final 7-5 score. Tim qualified for the quarterfinals against Steve Reiners of Humboldt. Reiners took Tim down in the first period, but a quick reversal by Tim in the second period and he took him down for a 5-2 lead heading into the final period. Reiners pinned Tim in the time of 2:45. Coach King said Tim sort of fell into the pinning hold; but noted that he was not being as aggressive as he needed to be and that probably caused the pin. Tim finished his career as a Mustang wrestler with a 27-2 record during his senior year. You did a fine job all throughout the season, Tim!!!! We are real proud of you!!! Kirk Rodgers managed to pull off a sixth place finish in the shot put. Kent gave seven more points to the team’s total with a first place finish in the 400 meter dash. These are all examples of French that are used in our language quite often. Foreign languages are becoming more important every day as our world shrinks due to improved methods of communication, faster modes of travel and the increasing number of multi-national businesses. A foreign language is related to many areas of interest such as history, psychology and political science. If you like to study human behavior and be involved with people, you would probably benefit from learning a foreign language. As you learn a language that's different from your own, the people’s culture becomes apparent to you because language differences are caused by culture differences. Unless you can understand a person's language, it will be very hard to fully understand that person. We deal with people from other countries more and more every day. which means that in the future many of us will find a foreign language useful to know. 138 French Club Front Row - Advisor - Sally Galvan. All of the activities we were involved in — sports, clubs, plays, etc.; have put influences on our lives. Outside activities — 4-H, livestock shows, rodeos, etc., have also played an important part in making us what we are. These memories will always remain with us. Some of us will be back in the school again. Others have broken the bonds and are moving on. Friends gather together to talk of the past year and the future. Sentimentality brings tears to the eyes of a few with the realization of another year past. Memories hang in the air around a cluster of friends. Underclassmen talking of their year or years to finish; upperclassmen exchanging addresses. Boy, am I glad the play is over! And the band played on . . . Nanc must be having a party again! One of Pam’s outside activities. “We are the cheerleaders, we cheer for Davis . . Football team is out for another victory! Up for another two points. Time passes and is past. The fact that many of us would ever be leaving the halls of D. C. High seemed to most of us a far away dream. But changing the tassle from the left to the right turned it into reality. As for us seniors, we open the doors to a new beginning and a new life. Go for it! Unlike many Iowa schools, ours is a place all its own. It is a small farm community where everyone knows everyone elses business; yet it is the big time school where friends meet in the halls. D. C. H. has a style all its own. As we cheered the sophomore football team on to a conference championship, cheered Tom Hill on to State Cross Country Meet, girls basketball team on to a district championship, Tim Shipley on to State Wrestling Meet, the boys track team on to the State Championship, and the boys baseball team on to a district championship; we carried the enthusiasm and pride of the Mustang wherever we went, proving that we are fulfilling our dreams of yesterday. She made it! What you put into something is what you get out of it! Sound familiar? That quote holds true for this yearbook! If you're not satisfied with it, you can’t blame anybody but yourself! You had your ideas and different ways of doing things; why didn't you come to me and explain them? Same goes for the lengthy time period it took to get this completed; it takes co-operation and work from everyone to come up with a good yearbook. I would like to thank everyone of you WHO DID TAKE THE TIME to help me put this yearbook together. I hope you find that all your ideas really did help to make this a better yearbook.
