Surin is an extremely overpopulated city of about 20,000 people. Kris has two older sisters who teach school in Thailand. His father is the superintendent of all Surin Schools. In his country, Kris was active in soccer, basketball, and pingpong. While in America Kris enjoyed American food, especially pizzas and hamburgers. He also enjoyed the freedom of no dress code here, while in Surin a uniform is worn to school. During his stay, Kris was involved in the percussion section in band, golf, and art. He is a very talented art student. Kris plans to come back to the United States someday to attend medical school in Iowa City. Kris had a lot of good times here and I'm sure we'll miss him. 32 AFS Student Seniors So Much Of Life Ahead. We've Only Just Begun. Ever wonder who sent out the 4.0 letters to all who received straight A's? Nation- al Honor Society. This was just part of their yearly activities. There was also a Christmas party with much illness and the picnic at the lake. Most important of all was the bake sale for the teachers, to buy honor cords for all the Honor students in the graduating class of 1978. The first major project was the election of class representa- tives and the first meeting. Donita and Wendell put things into action for homecoming. Donita hired the band Stairway Express for the dance. The theme was You Light Up My Life and was sung by Beth Blumhagen. The Freedom Jam Concert was a great success and enjoyed by all. The performers in the group put on a skit. Everyone should remember two, four, five ? The AFS Christmas was a challenge-challenge of the sexes that is. Students competed with teachers of opposite sexes. Which sex won? The men did. (Next time gals) Kris then gave a talk and showed slides. The student council helped clean up the Fine Arts Theatre. They scraped gum off seats and all said it was work but fun. The most noticeable change was the painting of the press box. Twelve students painted it gold with maroon letters saying Home of the Mustangs and Mustang Stadium. That about wraps it up for the Student Council 77-78. The UN class really began cooking this year, when after the first time, it was offered as a class. In class the students kept up on current events by reading newspapers and listening to the news. Sometimes class discussions of world problems became very deep. Also, in class the students brushed up on their parlimentary procedure. In the fall, those who could went to Des Moines for the Governor's UN day. There they adopted resolutions worked on earlier in class. Spring brought them to Cedar Falls 3 days for the Iowa High School UN Day. . HUSTIW;C0U«1RY The Student Council's finished press box at graduation. L ettermen ? L etterperson ? First they helped remodel the old movie theater which is to be used as a Com- munity Art Center. Their second project was the rebuilding of two old houses. Each class had their own house. It took lots of hard work and exper- ience to rebuild a house that had been stripped down to a shell, but they did it and the houses look great. The boys learned a lot from the class that will help them throughout their lives. Every night there is either a movie, skating, bowling, swimming, dancing, or you can go to the game room anytime. Twice a week there are intramurals. Everyone is divided into teams and competes in softball, volleyball, and basketball. The over-all winning team, at the end of the six weeks, goes to the Dutch Oven for a free pizza party. Every week each person received $7.00 for spending money plus bonus coupons for attending your classes. During the school year everyone receives $2.00 per month. The purpose of Upward Bound is to motivate high school students with college ability to further their education with some sort of post-secondary schooling. Upward Bound is a good place to meet people and an over-all great experience. Check it out!!! The Sky Is The BOTTOM-Jim Gideon, Peggy Fenton, John Gideon. TOP-Sheila Dickerson, Patty Fenton. You Lite Up Life This was a Homecoming no one will forget. Monday started off happenings with Hats off to the Mustangs day. Tuesday brought a crazy. Sock it to 'em day. Wednesday was Inside out and Backward day. You'll have to admit a few students really outdid themselves on this day. Boot'em and Bib'em was planned for Thursday and finally Friday was the traditional Maroon and Gold Day. All during the week pep assemblies were given by different clubs ana organizations. Remember the Gong the Demons Show with host Mark Warren? Thursday was a bie night with coronation of Queen Deb and King Dan ana then afterwards the big ride around the square on the fire truck and the bon fire by the football field. Of course, every night there was work to be done on the floats. All were in preparation for the events on Friday; the big PARADE!!! But alas on Friday morning when the 8:30 tardy bell rang an unidentified substance was draining from the sky. At 11:30, panic found its way thru the school's halls—unless it quit raining all parade plans would be canceled!!! Oh drats!! That means I have to go to 6th hour class, even worse, much more rain might mean a cancelled game and if the game was cancelled so would the dance. Oh what a Homecoming. But the game was played in the rain and mud, which we won 8-0 and the dance was held and even tho the theme was You Light Up My Life this homecoming would be a little darker. The Greatest Show On Earth Circus 100 Circus On Oct. 21 the rock group Circus performed'a Concert in the gymnasium after a home basketball game. The band is from Madison Wisconsin and was invited by the Big Gold concert band for a repeat performance, since the year before not too many people were allowed to come due to bad weather and other conflict- ing activities. But this year there was a big crowd to hear the fantastic, Funky music of Circus. Everyone, I'm sure, had a great time and would like to have them again next year to give out some more of their Rock and Roll Music. Peanut Butter And, Freedom Jam? . . .Boogie night . . . Your as cold as ice. . .It feels like the first time . . . Carry on my way-ward son. . .These were just a few of the songs that made Freedom Jam's appear- ance at our school such a great hit. Not only were they a super Rock-n-Roll entertaining band, but they also wanted to spread good feelings of patriotism and the love of Cod. The concert ended leaving everyone with a boogie down feeling!!! Freedom Jam 101 Manly-Yes, But I like It Too! Farmer's Ball AN IRISH ] Ml jmmm AND FARMERS, Old Mother Nature again made circumstances difficult for any activities that anyone had planned; only this time the factor was snow. Usually held in December, the Farmer's Ball had to be put off until March. Due to the creative minds of the GRA officers it was more of a success than if it had been held in December. Since it was held on St. Patrick's Day, the girls thought they'd put a mite bit of Irish in their spring; and so they did with a big box of Irish Spring soap. Also, if anyone was looking for their rainbow's end, there was a farmer's pot of gold at the end of this rainbow, with an old commode filled with corn. The nights entertainment was Zebedee. 102 Farmer's Ball One Act Plays Three's a Crowd Mr. Carlisle..-........Director Theresa Fenton............Ellen Monica Short.........Madeline Lane Horn...................Mr. Johnson Joe Snyder........Eddie Johnson Warren Rickart............Elmer Sheila Stoker ....Stage Manager This play was set in the 1950's and was a comedy about Eddie being infatuated with Madeline; Madeline was playing the field, and Ellen had a crush on Eddie. Washington Bloomfield, Iowa A very, very SPECIAL THANKS to Mr. Jim Roberts, our yearbook photographer, for all the times he got a call saying come quick to take this picture, and we need it yesterday, and somehow he always got there knowing that it probably would be cancelled. We appreciate all your time and efforts and know that you put as much time into this yearbook as we did. BLOOMFIELD NEWSPAPER Davis County Republican Bloomfield Democrat Special thanks to Gary Spurgeon and Mary Runkle, and also the newspaper Staff for the many times we came in for one certain picture and you had to dig to China to find it. Thanks for all the help. THANK YOU!!! 128 THANK YOU!!! ADVERTISERS We would like to thank all of our advertisers for helping make this 78 yearbook possible. Without your help financially, there would be no way to put a book like this together THANK YOU!!! SPECIAL HELP We would like to thank Karen Sloan and Mrs. Kincart for the cover design, (otherwise we would be stuck with the one Renee made up!!), and thanks to Karen for all the little Charmers she drew up to make this yearbook have a special touch. Thanks to the yearbook staff for their sales and Ms. McKee and the post Staff Editors. Really special thanks to Jeff Garner for all the film he developed and all the time he helped us. Thanks to all my friends who put their two cents worth in because little cents always add up. THANK YOU!!! Mr. Francis, what can we say? Thanks for having patience for irresponsible, slow, grouchy, always missing deadlines editors. We appreciate all the help especially at the end when we seemed never to have time to do anything. Yesterday we were children With nothing much to do. Play and fight and tease, And sad times were few. Today we are teenagers With fads and going steady School and homework and clubs Pizza and spaghetti. Tomorrow well remember When we're sixty, old and gray, The good times and the bad times, And the memories that will stay Kelley Jones Todays go by fast, tomorrows are just around the corner, and yesterdays will last a lifetime.
