Mr. T. C. Thompson Assistant Supt.-- T ransportation Northeast Missouri State Teachers, B.A. University of Missouri Buses . . . The Heart of Our T ransportation School bus transportation is big business in Davis County. At least it must be, judging from the number of school buses one sees on the high- ways around 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. five days a week. Over 1,200 high school and elementary students ride in the 29 buses and 11 private cars which travel the 40 regular bus routes. Last August, 10 new 48-passenger buses were purchased to help in this tremendous task. Plans are being made to buy 6 more new buses this summer. Bus routes range from 47 miles for one high school route to around 20 miles for some ele- mentary centers. Private haulers’ routes are from 15 to 38 miles each. Mr. Thompson has been stressing safety on all buses. His theory is that students' lives cannot be risked with faulty brakes and worn tires. Just as in any other business, promptness is another point that is emphasized. Drivers maintain a schedule which is followed very closely. The list of regular Senior High drivers in- cludes: Dennis Arnold, Eugene Bolin, Roscoe Brooks, Jackie Henderson, Paul Hougland, Benny Howk, Jerald Jackson, James Keobke, Max Leyda, Larry Marshall, Jim Martin, Charles Murphy, Vernon Neill, Darrell Rys- dam, Leslie Swindler, and Jerry White. Sub- stitute drivers are: Gerald Mitchell, Gary Har- ris, and Stanley Hunter. 14
