For the occupants of the room were Colleen Lyle and Lors Mrdkrff Thrnk rng rt to be a practrcal 1oke I asked what rt was all about Wrthout stopprng from her work Lors replled that she and Colleen had formed the Lyle and Mrdkrff Prlvate De tectrve Agency and that at present they were workrng for the Presrdent of the Unrt ed States Randall Storm It seemed that someone had stolen hrs safety razors and was tryrng to smuggle them over to Russra Hrs august mayesty had been so overcome by the audacrty of the act that he had refused to use any others except hrs own Con sequently he had not shaven for days and was so ashamed of hrs appearance he would not be seen rn publrc Affarrs were rn an awful state' We arrrved rn Lrverpool England at the txme scheduled and as the boat drd not sarl untrl the next day I decrded to go slght seelng Whrle gazrng rn a shop wrndow I was startled by a newsboy callmg, Extra' Extra' All about the famous Merrcan' I bought a paper and tl e headlrres that greeted my eyes were these, Young Amerr can Accomplrshed the Impo srble Perry Trclenor Alone Scales Dangerous Clrfl' of Mount Qurck descent I folded the paper wrth a look of satrsfactron on my face for Memorles came crowdrng back thrck and fast and I was so lost rn them I drd not notrce where my steps had taken me All of a sudden I awoke to the realrzatron that I was lost How could I get back? Suddenly someone touched me on the shoulder and a vorce demanded Jean Barrd what are you dorng here It was Mary Natron I told her my tale of woe and she offered to act as a guide As we strolled back to the prer Mary told me that she and Mrldred Oost had the Ford agency rn that crty and had made enough money to buy one for therr own personal use Just then I notrced a large lrmousme rollrng by and rn rt were Mabel Hardy Helen Wrlkms, Lors Wmstead and Mary Julrette Hurter How come I asked Oh, they re rn the chorus of our leadrng Mrdnrght Frolrcs here, Mary answered We had now reached the boat and after thankrng my companron for the trouble she had taken I went to my room to get thmgs rn readrness for the next day After a nrght of rest I was awakened by the tossrng to and fro of the shrp A storm at sea my wor st fears had at last been realrzed Dressrng as qurckly as possrble I hastened to the lrbr ary where the noble captarn was tr yrng to assure the others who had gathered there that we were rn no rmmedrate danger At thrs moment who should come bound rng rnto the room but Gabe Mattrngly He called Charlle asrde and rn subdued whls pers mformed hrm that he had rust recerved an S O S call from a stranded vessel and rf help were not sent rmmedrately, all would perrsh Full speed ahead was the order grven It came too late, for by the trme we reached the place there were no srgns of anythrng, except one poor person bravely strugglrng agarnst the waves A boat was lowered and when he was brought on deck I stared rn astonrshment for the res cued person was Drckre Drllman No wonder he was the sole survlvor, for besrdes be mg an expert swrmmer, he was lrght headed enough to keep hrmself above the water for an rndefinrte length of trme We then proceeded on our wav and rn due trme cast anchor at a small Spanrsh port Sparn' How that word thrrlled me for at once I had vrslons of dark harred senorrtas therr toreado lovers and the prtrless vrlllans We landed at the right trme rt seemed for there was to be a bullfight there that day I decrded to go see tnrs rnhuman sport Seated rn my box I gazed rdly around untrl my eyes rested on a g oup of grrls Surely I was mrstaken but no-for there all huddled together were Dora Nell Schenk Clara Smrth and Patty Sampley w 1th Kay Roemer leadlng the group But what was therr brg rdea, and why were they decorated out lrke carnlval queens As rf by mental telegraphy my questron were answered for I heard Kay say Now one two three go Rah Pah' Rah Rah Rah' Rah Rah' Rah Rah Rah' Rah Rah' Rah Rah Rah' Kenneth' Kenneth' Kenneth' And rnto the arena walked Kenneth Shelton, as rf he were Lord Hlgh Executroner of all he surveyed That was the last I remember I must have farnted for when I came to J. soft I . . . 1947 SENIOR CLASS PROPHFCY By JEAN Bunn HERE IS an old saying that runs thus If on the first day of May a young lady will arise early and go to an old abandoned well she will behold rn lt her future Thinking this would be quite a lark I determined to see whether or not there was any truth rn the theory But, to be quite frank, my main obrect was to satisfy that peculiar characteristic attached to everything Qexcept members of the masculine sexj curiosity Accordingly, 5 00 a m , May 1st found me trudging my way through a freshly plowed field which was none the better for the heavy dew that had fallen the night before By the time I reached the well I was thoroughly disgusted with rt, myself and the world Jean Band 1n general Then, to add to my grievances, there was a heavy covering to be removed, which after much strenuous exercise I suc ceeded rn doing I then turned my attention to the water itself At first I could discern nothing but the blue of the sky above, till splash' Somethmg hit the water and the waves closed over it At first I thought rt to be a rock or something I had pushed rn but no it ' was coming to the surface and good gracious where had all those people come from? Look' Look' There she comes, cried someone excitedly She? Who I asked rn bewrlderment Why the famous high diver, Margaret Grrflin of course My mind was clear now So this was the famous Florida resort, and once more I was to behold the countenance of a former schoolmate As she emerged from the water the crowd parted like the Red Sea, that its 1d0I might pass through What yuh say there, Baird? In spite of her sudden rise to publicity she was stil' the sarre Margaret I started to explam but she cut me short by suggesting that the crowd wouldn t appreciate our conversation and if Id wart rn the hotel lobby till she changed her costume for one more suitable to the occasion We d have tea and talk over old times The hotel was a luxurlous place and as I had noticed several persons of promr nence passing rn and out I decided to look over the registry to see rf any of my old classmates were among 1he regl tered On my Way to the desk I noticed some young men grouped about what looked to me like a flower stall By approaching closer however I found it to be a telephone booth and its operator Wilma Murphy Her companions were Jrmm, Watts Tommy Bell Jimmy Pfister and Leroy Crowe What s it all about? I demanded As soon as our greetmgs had been exchanged Tommy explained that the four of them had formed a quartet Jimmy Vlfatts it seemed was the individual star or the quartet, and as his services were so much rn demand elsewhere he commanded three fourths of the money taken rn By this time Margaret had arrived on the scene and as she was hungry as usual we departed rn search of the tea room Here we found a table away from the school days I offered her my warmest congratulations for her success but she only grinned modestlx and replied Oh, you haven t heard anything yet Helen Best s got a French duke all roped in and the happy event comes off next month and Sharon Chapman has set a world record for dancing Went two weeks without stopping Strrman Am brose and his wife the former Julia Smith are in town He lS manager of the A P store here Anne Hart Robey is singing with the Metropolitan Opera Betty Graham rs here attending the races with her husband who is riding horses for Robert Temple ho has made millions from his race horses But what is the news of Owensboro? Henry Anderson IS now prmcrpal of D C H S and Anna Rose Magan is his secretary Melba Ambrose teaches geometry Harry Brumley teaches agriculture and Jim Ambrose took Miss Fr nch s place when she retired L K Burcham is work ing in his father ln law s night club up on Highway 60 Dorothy Belle Houston is cigarette gul at the same night club Dan Chfton Wrlhovte is captain of the police force James Jones IS a radio announcer over station WMW which is opened and operated by J W Mitchell who married Margie Wrggrnton M G Barnett owns a large garage on Fourth street Roy Murdock rs working for P A Kirk who is the father of hrs wife, the former Pauline Kirk Mr and Mrs Kelly Grst the former Margie Horn have charge of the Public Library Clara Zelma Daniel rs manager of the S S Kresge 5 and 10 cent store But Shannon Cowgell what became of her? I asked Margaret s smile faded and over her face there crept such a look of sorrow that I thought perhaps I d sard the wrong thing She turned and without speaking silently pointed to a nearby table where two grrls were lunchmg Instantly I recog nrzed them as Shannon 'ind Carolyn Gordon but for once Shannon was srlent I was astounded, for this was the first time I d ex er known such a thing- to happen Vlhat s wrong? I wanted tr, know Dumb ' my companion responded Dumb as a door knob I always knew if she d1dn't let up some day she d los her voice and surely enough she did Carolyn s act ing as her private secretary and martvred companion ' She looked the Dart, too My attention was attracted to the main entrance of the room for who should be standing there but Charlie Carter and he was clad in the uniform of a naval .
