CLASS HISTORY Ah, there's good news tonight. Yes, it is with great pride and anticipation that the realization of our graduation draws nearer with the termination of each new day. As each of you may well know there are certain distinctions that have set our class aside as one by itself. Due to the consolidation of the four high schools of Davie County, our class not only is the largest to graduate from any one school in Davie, but it is also one with a high percentage of honor roll students. We have the privilege of being the first senior class to enter and to graduate from Davie. For this, many gracious thanks are due to Mr. Curtis Price, County Superintendent, for his integrity and intelligence in the planning of this new school . Let us now draw back the curtains of this past year of school life and take a brief resume of the activities of the Class of 1957. Before entering Davie, as juniors we were well aware that at the beginning of our senior year we would be required to leave behind our individual schools and the history that we had written there. Upon the opening of school in August of 1956 we were looking forward with great anticipation to going into our new con- solidated high school, which is one of the finest constructions in the country. We were a graduating class of one hundred and seventeen eager and ambitious seniors. So it wasn't unusual at all a few months ago to see members of our class, running down the corridors, shouting, Hey, look at me, everybody, l'm a SENIOR! We regret to say that since the beginning of school we have lost four of our classmates, leaving us with only 113. Two have moved away. One stopped due to illness and another stopped to begin work. Before proceeding further, the senior class would like to pay tribute to our County Superintendent, Mr. Curtis Price, our Principal, Mr. D. F. Stillwell, to theseniorhomeroom teachers: Mrs. June Hicks, Mr. Walter Morris, Mrs. Helen Crenshaw, Mr. James Wall, and to other members of the faculty who have so willingly given to us their time, help, and patience in all matters which have confronted us this past year. Now that we are seniors, we can hardly realize that this our last year, the one for which we have looked forward to for such a long time, has finally rolled around. We have had many new things to do: electing officers, ordering caps and gowns, invitations and cards, diplomas, publishing an annual, and besides all this, taking part in all the school activities. This was the year that we were graduating, so we immediately began to make all our plans. Rings were not ordered our iunior year as was formerly the customary procedure, therefore, we were looking forward as seniors to receiving new ones with our new school's name engraved upon it. Shortly after school started, a delegation of seniors met with ring officials and decided the style and kind of ring. On Wednesday, December 5, Mr. Stillwell called a meeting of the seniors. He announced that our rings should arrive by December 16. We were then thrilled to know that our rings were on the way. Our next event was to choose and elect senior officers. The following were selected: Mackie Deadmon, President, Carmen Rice, Vice-President, Joan Shore, Secretary, Johnsie Ellis, Treasurer. Sometime later the seniors were photographed as individual groups for the annual. It was thoroughly delightful to see everyone dressed in his Sunday best. The photographers later returned to make group pictures of all the various clubs and activities. The sports scene at Davie has proven itself to be very favorable thus far. Many of our seniors have upheldthe Rebels' hame in football, basketball, and baseball. Credit should be given to the coaches, Mr. Jack Ward, Mr. Peeler, ond Mr. Frank Hardin, for the fine job they have done in the direction of our teams. We, too, have had a fine group of cheerleaders to lead the Rebel cheering section. You underclassmen, however, know and realize the many and different ways in which the senior class of '57 has served you this year. You have, as do we, fond memories of this first year in Davie. This past year has written for our class an illustrious history. May the coming years write for you underclassmen a history fully as worthy. And now if you will kindly excuse me, l have iust time to send this document by special messenger to the Hunter Publishing Company, so that in years to come the students of Davie may turn to page 33 of their texts on American History and read to their hearts' content of the first and greatest senior class to graduate from Davie High.
