CELEBRATING 150 YEARS The insistent ringing of a solitary school bell through the halls of Chamber reminds us all that the mandate laid upon students and teachers on that March morning in 1837 is today reiterated. Get up and do it again: live faithful lives; dis- cover in this place the ways of wis- dom and virtue; open yourself to truth; learn justice and compassion; offer yourself in service. — President John Kuykendall Sesquicentennial Opening Convocation introduction A single bell chimed in David- son ' s Sesquicentennial Celebration as a March 12, 1987 convocation commemorated the opening day of classes 150 years earlier. On that date in 1837, two professors and President Robert Hall Morrison began teaching 64 students at a Manual Labor School founded by Concord Presbytery. This church connection domi- nated the Sesquicentennial Opening Convocation. The program ' s theme, ' Faith and Learning , incorporated Yale Divinity School Dean Le- ander E. Keek ' s speech, entitled, Academe and Steeple: Shared Vocation. Keck and three other theologians received honorary degrees; the other recipients were Director of Claremont Graduate School Institute for Antiquity and Christianity James M. Robinson; President of San Francisco Theolog- ical Seminary J. Randolph Taylor; and Duke University Professor of New Testament Dan O. Via. 1 . In the shade of the towering Sesquicentennial logo. Assistant Chaplain Brenda Tapia; Chairman of the Board of Trustees Ben Craig; and former Interim President, Dean Emeritus of Faculty and Kenan His- tory Professor Emeritus Frontis Johnston wait for their parts of the program. 2.
