POLICE FALL SPORTS Section Editor Lucy Phillips Copy Editor Ellis Tinsley FOOTBALL An explosive offense, a hard-nosed defense and a new, spirited attitude jelled to produce the first winning season for the Football Wildcats in eleven vears. In securing a respectable 6-4 finish the Wildcats outscored their opponents 293-202 and were briefly ranked tenth in Division I-AA. A balanced offensive attack under quarterbacks Al Rhvne and Brian Whitmire utilized the powerful backfield trio of Alvin Atkinson, Craig Pvles, and Rav Sinclair on the ground and the swift, graceful Gifford Piercy through the airways. Atkinson and Piercy finished second in the division in scoring and receiving, respectively, and the team landed a fourth place spot in total offense. Evidence of these impressive statistics came in a 40-16 victory over Guilford, 35-7 and 42-6 wins over Catawba and Southwestern, a 35-6 Homecoming victory ' over Randolph-Macon and a 42-0 drubbing of the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney. The defense, though plagued by injuries in key positions, held six opponents to less than two touchdowns and turned in several impressive performances. Phil Gilbert and Kevin Hanna roamed in an excellent backfield while star senior Jim Livaditis a nd freshman standout Sammy Huntley were awesome at the linebacker slots and Mike Sheridan anchored the line. Defensive highlights came in the Guilford victory and in a 10-0 loss to the highlv-touted Engineers from Lehigh. 22 ' 4 J ! • ROSTER Mark Anderson Wade Anderson Alvin Atkinson Kevin Attar Matt Auker Atmire Bailey Brent Baker David Barber John Bazos Craig Binkley Mark Blaekman Robbie Brannen Jeff Bums Bam - Cannon Bill Carr Bill Chater Kevin Cox Ari Crenshaw Clarence Del Forge Dave Donaldson Mickey Dillon Brian Dulaney Lam Elmer Mark Fahev Dylan Faircloth John Fetcho Ken Fleming Virgil Fludd RicK Gaines Dean Garvin Phil Gilbert John Gravelv Flint Gray Greg Hammons Kevin Hanna Guy Harbert Mark Hartman Roger Herbert Charles Hooks Kenny Hovet Sammy Huntley James Jones Mike Jones Jeff Kane Andre Kennebrew Rob King Dan Klinar Stan KJinger Willie Lanier Jerry Leavitt Derek Lee Joe Leman Chuck Lifford John Limperis Jim Livaditis Bryan Lowe Steve Lowe James McLain Rusty McLelland Jimmy Matson Bond Millard Dave Nichols Joe Palasak Wayne Pavmer Mark Pendelton Gifford Piercv Patrick Pope Bill Price Barry Prine Craig Pyles Tim Quinn Al Rhyne Aaron Rollins Van Samples Mike Sheridan Pat Sheridan Mitch Shirely Gary Sims Ray Sinclair Lance Sisco Shawn Stafford Perrv Swindall Robert Thonisberry Tom Trahey Durand Turner Leonard Walker Robert Wall Terrazzo Wallace Steve Ward Joe Webb Brian Whitmire Kendrick Williams W —I rr ' -Jt ' ■' . . . ' (LA.. K J SOCCER After going winless in 1977 and taking five victories in 1978, the 1979 Soccer Wildcats continued to show improvement; accomplishing an 8-13 season ' s record. Praised throughout the season for their tenacity and spirited play, the Wildcats proved themselves a team to be reckoned with. Big victories came over Marshall, Western Carolina, Wofford, UT-Chattanooga and VMI. Standouts on the squad of rugged kickers included Jimmy Hawk, C.K. Nichols, Pete Sluiter and goalie Mike Iordanou. An excellent group of freshmen provided an important new spark to the team with Hall Barnett, Tom Schember and Bill Wahl making large contributions. The majority of the teams ' thirteen setbacks proved to be the result of an inability to put together two solid halves of play. Nevertheless, the Wildcats held nationally ranked Appalachian State to just two goals in the first half before bowing 7-0 and played Atlantic Coast Conference opponents North Carolina and North Carolina State to 3-1 and 5-1 games. r v «fcV ROSTER Doug Schuessler Walter Dean Mike Iordanou Edwin Jones Jose Lazano Charles Price Tom Schember Peter Hairston Daniel Robinson C.K. The highlight of the year came as the team captured the European Cross Country Meet held on Davidson turf by placing five runners in the top thirteen and besting second place Campbell by 16 points. At season ' s end, Jeff Morrow was named Most Valuable Runner while Jack Smith, finishing in the top five among teammates in every meet, received the Best Freshman Runner award. Senior captain George Strobel received the Fred Borch Award for most fully achieving his potential and for contributions both on and off the cross country trail. The women ' s squad completed their second year in existence with a fine 3-2 dual meet record. The Lady Wildcats captured second in both the Stone Mountain Road Race and the European Cross Country Meet and took third in a twenty-five mile 5-by-5 relay. Merris Hollingsworth was named best freshman runner, never finishing below fifth for the team, and a deserving Susan Davidson received the Most Valuable Runner award. Daniel E. Armistead Gregory G. Questions about eligibility, rule changes, walkouts by umpires and referees and lackluster attempts at wit published weekly bv the Davidsonian all threatened to undermine the purity of athletics in its finest form. Yet IMAC strove on, undaunted by Davidson ' s monsoon climate, refusing even to be shaken by rumors of Sterling Martin ' s departure for another position in the athletic hierarchy. The season opened with the premier athletic contest: flickerball. A season characterized by astronomical scores and non-existent freshman defenses saw the incomparable tailback Jim Richards shake off a nasty court struggle over eligibility ' and lead the SAEs to an undefeated regular season. Faltering somewhat in the tournament, the team had to go a full three games in the final series before ousting a tenacious contingent of KAs in the final. For the women, it was an exhibition of that age old IMAC spirit; the story of sheer courage and pride. Surviving a small preseason turnout, lab conflicts and numerous injuries. Hole ' s Angels scraped and clawed their way through the regular season. In the tournament, the loss of tailback sensation Anne S tanback to injury, darkened the title outlook for the Angels. The rugged season climaxed, however, in a hard-nosed defensive struggle between the Angels and the Kaolas which was tenaciously fought down to the final gun, the Angels taking home the cheese. WINTER IS BASKETBALL HI )n February 5th, where were YOU when the lights went out? 112 WINTER SPORTS Section Editor Lucy Phillips Copy Editor Ellis Tinsley BASKETBALL Plagued by inconsistency in a variety of ways, the basketball Wildcats struggled with a tough schedule over the course of the 1979-80 campaign. A relatively- young squad produced some excellent basketball but failed to sustain any long-term periods of solid play. The offense though erratic, was a bright spot throughout most of the season. With Rich DiBenedetto and Todd Haynes posting in the middle, and Ernie Riegel at the throttle, the Wildcats ' motion offense produced points and excitement. DiBenedetto led the team in scoring and rebounding while Haynes followed him in scoring and added phenomenal free throw accuracy. Six-foot, nine-inch center Jamie Hall led the team in steals and blocked shots and was second in rebounding. Freshman sensation John Carroll came in at the other guard posi- tion to provide hard-nosed defense, ball control, and hustle. Rich Perkey and Bryan Rowan came off the bench to make key contributions while freshmen Casey Ramm, Cliff Tribus, and Rich Wilson saw a lot of action. Victories over Pennsylvania, VMI. Appalachian, and archrivals UNC-Charlotte proved the team ' s potential for winning. The Wildcats were even more impressive in a 66-63 loss to powerful North Carolina State, a 61-53 loss to Wake Forest, and in three overtime losses to VMI, The Citadel, and South Carolina. Tim Bowker sparked an emotional rout of Marshall ' s Thundering Herd, 81-53, in the last home game for the seniors. Then the most awesome play of the year came late in the first half of the battle with the Demon Deacons on their home floor. With Davidson leading, Jamie Hall crept down the lane, grabbed an offensive rebound and exe- cuted a wham-bam, thank-you mam, rim-rattling, jumbo jam which silenced the partisan Wake Forest crowd. A two point loss at the hands of the Mountaineers from Appalachian State ended the Wildcats ' hopes for a Southern Conference Tournament berth. However, the Cats came back to put together a solid 73-70 win over the 49ers from Charlotte to earn area bragging rights and cap off the season in fine fashion. Wi WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL The leadership of captains Anna Hutchinson and Sarah Womack, the experience of seniors Penny Keels, Kirby Owen, and Beth Thacker and the enthusiasm of a host of freshmen characterized the 1979-1980 basketball season for the Wildcattes. The climax of the 8-10 year came in the first half of a home game against North Carolina Wesleyan with the contest locked in a see-saw battle. Sarah Womack, need- ing two points to become the first Davidson woman to score 1000 career points, lofted one of her patented high-arching jump shots which found the bottom of the basket for string music. As in all of her years at Davidson, Womack contri- buted a cool, consistent style of play and was named to the All-State First Team for the second straight year. Labeled as greatly im- proved, the swimmers stroked their way to a 7-1 record before dropping five of their last six meets. Awesome victories came early as the Wildcats thrashed J.C. Smith 65-42 and swamped Augusta 82-30 and Emory 97-14 in a dual meet. The swim team went on to destroy Washington and Lee 68-40, and VMI 80-33, be- fore losing by a single point to conference foes Applachian State and The Citadel, 57-56 each time. It was at the Southern Conference Tourna- ment where the team displayed its true potential and this event saw school records shattered en masse. Four Wildcats received All-Conference honors and standout Mark Animal Tommer- dahl repeated as conference champion in the 400 meter individual medley. Joining Tommerdahl on the All-Conference roster was Craig Finger, who set school records in the 100 meter butterfly and 200 meter individual medley, Warren Beck, who took school records in the 200 meter backstroke and 200 meter freestyle, and Mike Schremmer, who nabbed a school mark in the 1650 meter freestyle event. The team also set school records in the 400 meter medley relay and the 400 meter freestyle relay. In addition, divers Frank Bright and Charu Shanna added crucial points and rounded out the All- Conference list. w H — ——Wl MJ ROSTER Craig Allen Keith Riddle Warren Beck Steve Risley Frank Bright Mike Schremmer Ray Craven Charu Sharma Craig Finger Tony Smidi Mark Hammond Tom Spangler Ed Imbrogno Mark Tommerdahl Tom Marsnbum Kirk Williams Ralph Mosca Rick Williams Pete Neefus Steve Ybod 121 WRESTLING Bright individual performances highlighted an otherwise dismal 2-9 season for the Wildcat Grapplers. A rebuilding year saw the team suffer from a lack of paticipants causing for- feits and the loss of crucial points. However, a strong nucleus of sound athletes showed great determination and dedication as characterized by fine personal achievements. Captains Mike Garfinkel and Rob King were most impressive throughout the year. King, wrestling in the heavj weight division, achieved the best over- all record with big wins in matches against Campbell, Furman, and Washington and Lee where he pinned all of his opponents. Coming back from a painful back injury, King finished second in the Southern Conference Tourna- ment. Garfinkel wrestled in the 158-pound class turning in a number of impressive wins as did Scott Smith who finished fourth in the 134-pound class for the year. An excellent corps of freshmen was led by Tim Brotherton who scored vital wins for Coach Bob Estock. Led by seniors Robbie Kirkendal and John Parharn. the Marksmen shot then wa to a fine season in the win-loss Col- umn as the went 18-10. Along with Kirkendal and Parharn, freshman Doug Austin. John Hartman, and Pat Stuart hovered among the top five posi- tions throughout the sear The most impressive victor.- of the ear came in a quadrangular match as the Riflers edged The Citadel by one point to take first place over the Bulldogs, Funnan, and UT- Chattanooga. In this match. Parharn captured the individual title. At the Western Carolina Confer- ence Tournament, the team placed third as Kir- kendal took the individual honors. Held at East Tennessee State, the eventual winner, the South- ern Conference Tournament was a bit of a letdown as numerous sub-par performances caused a fifth place team finish. Special thanks to Ann ami Will whose enthusiasm, tireless dedication and artistic talent are true gifts to behold. Here ' s to Poopie and WEEL. ■■' ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Section Editors Being a section editor means hard work and no recognition. Gather- ing photographs and supervising staff with the heat of deadlines hot on owns neck is a tiresome and precari ous task. These editors deserve special recognition for a job well done — for maintaining standards of perfection, for living up to their responsibility, and for remaining en- thusiastic and supportive when the chips were down. PAM HAWKINS JANE DANIELS MARY WINDHAM ANDI LAMORTE NAN ZIMMERMAN Photographers The photographers have just as hard of a job, although to casual observers it seems quite glamorous to stand in front of crowds snap- ping pictures. The darkroom work is long and grueling. Section edi- tors wait until the last minute to ask for twenty- prints. Yearbook pho- tographers do not get paid. Thanks must ultimately go to KENNY CONNORS who manned the darkroom with himself, LEE MCCOR- MICK, and DOUG ZEIDONIS, taught JOHNNY LEAZER the finer points of printmaking, and kept a running inventory of supplies. The excellent color shots in the book are the work of Kenny, Lee, Doug, and a fledging photographer who appears anonymously. Staffers The staff is an essential part of the yearbook. This year ' s staff dwin- dled down to a dedicated and hardworking few. Thank vou CAROL ROCHE, ERIN ORR, DALE WITHROW, JIM REESE; SUE POT- TENGER, AND ELLEN CHURCHILL. And, of course, where would Sports be without the awesome copy editor ELLIS THE KID TINSLEY? 188 FOOTNOTES The copj printed in the L979- 1980 (, nii s and ( ' ranks is original or contains well-known quotes thai an) Davidson scholar should recog- nize. However, the Quips and ( ' rank s Ins printed two excerpts from poems in the l u ( sum Miscellany ' s Fall edition Copyrighted 1979. On p. 15, Quips and Cranks reprints several lines from Hargis Wester- field ' s Railside Mystic. On p. 193, Quips and Cranks reprints the last five lines from John Lane ' s Toms Farm. The (,)i i )s and Crank is printed on 80 ll s. dull rh I lie (, N |is and Cranks is printed on nu IDS. dull enamel paper. I lie copj set is ( laledonia with Italics. The cover is sailcloth with a hand of lexitone embossed with the college seal in gold metal. EDITORS COMMENT The spread you now see is a reaction to the apathy and irresponsi- bility th.it have not only plagued the Davidson campus but the year- hook staff as well. It is disillusioning to this editor to have people give their word and not live up to it. The yearbook does not materialize out of thin air. It is the hard work of section editors, photographers, and staff. The hook is finished; Quips and Cranks contains many new ideas and additions. Please give recognition to the excellent people that helped to put it together. They have preserved a year of your college life on paper and deserve a second glance and word of thanks. Despite several impressive victories against tough teams at the beginning of the season, and our early lead in the Southern Conference, the overall record was a disappointing 15-24. However several players had outstanding performances. John Porter matched impeccable defense in center field with consistent production at the plate and led the team with a .383 batting average. He also broke Davidson ' s stolen base record with twenty-three. J. P. was named to the All Southern Conference team, and also to the Aca- demic Ail-American team. Other team leaders included freshman first baseman John Marshall, who was named Southern Conference Rookie of the Year. Eddie Haskell led the Cats in homeruns with 8, and Allen Griffin broke the school ' s doubles record with thirteen. Although our hopes for the conference title were unfulfilled, the team, losing no seniors, is already looking towards next season with optimism. IK ADVERTISEMENTS Piedmont Bank supported the Wildcats before they were Wildcats. Bac ack in 1916 when Piedmont Bank and Trust Co. got started across Main Street from Davidson College, the college ' s teams weren ' t called the Wildcats at all. They were usually called by the school ' s colors as The Red and Black. That ' s when Piedmont Bank began its services to the college and its students. For more than 60 years, Piedmont Bank has helped Davidson and its students. The bank has supported Davidson athletics, college publications, drama productions, independ- ent and extended studies projects, fraternity fund-raising drives, the STEP Program, and WDAV. Piedmont Bank has provided loans to Davidsonians to buy cars and improve their homes. Many students, faculty, and staff keep their checking accounts at Piedmont. Piedmont Bank cares very much about that liberal arts college across the street, its people, and its teams. Piedmont cares about all its customers and its communities. Piedmont Bank. We Care. ?
